Hawks mini-camp signings

Post#1 » by playa_lev » Sun Jul 26, 2009 9:35 pm

Who do you think, the hawks should sign after the mini-camp? I watched the videos on NBA.com, and I have seen a couple of guys on the College/European level.

I would fill up the roster really cheap, and at the same time whit useful players.

1.Sign Garret Siler. He has the size, and as I heard, he has the motivation to. He could probably compete against Randolph Morris on which of them can lose fat faster, and after a couple of months in the NBDL he could get a chance to show something in the garbage time.

2. Sign Yaroslav Korolev. I know that this team needs a capable big bad, but the Hawks need a shooting forward to. Whit Marvin case not resolved, and actually if he’s case would be resolved, the bench would get length by signing Korolev. He can shoot the lights out. For a couple of minutes he would be ok. + He is still a lottery pick, so if you can sign a lottery pick for a minimum contract, that’s a massive move.

3.Sign Cenk Akyol. I would bring him near the fire. A saw him play a couple of years ago in the Turkish national team, and he was showing rare talent. He has high basketball IQ, on the defensive end he was like Ricky Rubio (wise, with few mistakes), on the offense he was more like Turkoglu. He is tall, and can shot.

I don’t know how many roster spots has the team, but from the free agent market I would try to sign Joe Smith, or if this isn’t possible, I would bring Shelden Williams back. Maybe Ike Diogu.

The Roster:

Bibby/Teague/Akyol
Johnson/Crawford
Marvin/Mo Evans/Korolev
J. Smith/Shelden(Diogu)
Horford/Zaza/Morris/Siler

So, you would have this lineup on the bench: Teague-Crawford-Evans-Shelden-Zaza , which is pretty solid. And you still have a couple of guys who could develop into something god: Akyol-Korolev-Siler

What do you guys think?

If our choices are summer camp alone, I would see if Shelden would have an interest, as I heard the Lakers had in him for a workout.
I would like to see more of Akyol....would he benefit behind Bibby, Teague and Crawford?

I haven't seen much of Korolev; do you think he can really produce against the Eastern Conference?

Can anyone say what they saw in Shelden Williams here or in Sacramento or Minnesota that would justify bringing him back? Seriously. He has bad hands which negate his offensive effectiveness and they are so bad that they affect his rebounding as well which is saying something. A vet like Joe Smith I can see.

Didn't Othello Hunter get some pub as one of the better mini-camp players? Yet he's overlooked when most people talk about the roster. I'd rather give him minutes than see Shelden in a Hawks uniform again. Also, don't forget Mario West. I think I'd rather have another year of Super-Mario being available for defensive duty than spend a roster spot on Akyol. Mario needs to work on not being an offensive liability, but isn't he every bit as good as Dahntay Jones just at league minimum rather than 3M a year. I still think Cenk needs more time in Europe getting quality minutes. There aren't going to be many minutes for that 7th small guy on the squad unless we suffer major injuries (another reason I like Mario is that he can make an impact when only given a minute to do it). It was good he came to the mini-camp to get an idea where he stands though.

I don't hate the ideas of Siler and Korolev.

My priorities would be:
1) Sign a veteran 4th big that Woodson would actually use. Joe Smith seems to the be the top guy left.
2) Sign Marvin.
3) Bring Othello Hunter and Mario West back.
4) Check on Johan Petro. I'm not sure about signing him over Siler, but if Petro can be had for the minimum then I would consider it because of his length. Not sure he'd sign on though, because minutes will be thin at that spot.

Bibby/Teague
Joe/Crawford/Mario
Marvin/Mo
Josh/Joe Smith?/Othello
Al/Zaza/Morris/(Petro or Siler)

I think we leave the 15th spot open in cause we need to adjust to injuries, but if Korolev is an effective long distance shooter as rumored then maybe he claims the spot. Player versatility makes the lineup deeper than it may appear on paper.

I love Mario, but he's in no way as good at Dahntay Jones, who's way more athletic, better at hounding the handler without giving fouls, and infinitely better on offense. Seriously, did you see some of his posters?

I don't know how Mario can suck so bad offensively when he has stuff like this:

1) that was off a defensive play

2) there is alot more to offense than dunking. for one thing his shot is more broke than josh's. but he does go all out on defense and that is what you need in a bench warmer.

if anything, the hawks are gonna resign their remaining players (minus solomon and thomas) and get a vet big. that would leave 2 spots available maybe siler and a third point guard. Frank Robinson or Aknol?

I almost completely agree with the post's creator.
Siler is huge and, as he sais, is a late bloomer. Many big men are. Why not give him a chance? Solomon has an offer from Indiana and R. Morris has already shown ALL he can do. We do not need him to contribute a lot this year, just get some minutes, defend Shaq for short periods, get fouls and try to smash somebody's head in his duty. May be we can get a diamond in two or three years for the price of a stone.
I am not an expert on Korolev (even though I am European) and I an mot sure how much of a shooter he is.
Akyos is a great player. More a three that a two and that is a position at which we could lack some depth even with Marvin resigning.
