Build a Dynasty General Discussion

Post#1 » by SabasRevenge! » Sun Jul 26, 2009 10:18 pm

January 1995 -
The Houston Rockets are the defending champs, Shaq and Penny are the talk of the league, and there are rumors of MJ's return to the Bulls. Great big men of the 80's like Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing are doing battle with the next generation of elite centers like Shaquille O'Neal and Alonzo Mourning.

Looking toward the draft, everyone is talking about Joe Smith and Antonio McDyess, while Jerry Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace lead a tremendous North Carolina squad. There is word that a kid named Kevin Garnett may become the first High School player to jump straight to the NBA since Darryl Dawkins almost 20 years ago.

Accelerated Modern Era Be a GM - beginning in 1995 - Who's interested?

For those of you who enjoyed Be a GM and would like to start another one after the conclusion of the current game, I've decided to post an idea for a modern era sim that begins in 1995. The league will be accelerated to allow for more seasons.

There is a scoring system that I go over later in this post. The scoring system is designed to weight scoring in favor of teams who are trying to win championships, but it still allows rebuilding franchises to rack up points in other categories. This is to prevent the inflated value of prospects and deflated value of veterans that occurred in the last sim. This is also a 20 team league, so the talent concentration will be a bit higher. Expansion is possible in future seasons. The league kicks off with a contraction draft that includes every player from the teams that were not selected.

For those of you who are interested, there is a bunch more information about salaries, etc. down below. It's designed to be a pretty in depth game, so I don't know if there will be enough reliable posters to keep it going, but it's worth a try. I'd like to participate in the league as a GM, but I'm willing to be the commish and perhaps get an expansion franchise later on. If anyone is interested in running the game for a season or two (or more) please post your interest in being commissioner.

*Interested posters should have a history of active participation and good communication in simulations like this.

WESTERN CONFERENCE
David Robinson and the Spurs are cruising towards a 60+ win season.

The Suns, loaded with veteran talent, want another crack at a title.

Young Payton and Kemp have the Sonics poised to contend for a long time.

Magic and Worthy may be gone, but the Lakers are surprising the league with a fast, young squad.

Stockton and Malone are both in their prime and the Jazz have never been better.

Fresh off a title, the Rockets look a bit disappointing and are looking to add a major piece, but Hakeem and co. won't be overlooked come playoff time.

A year after upsetting the favored Sonics, the upstart Nuggets have added rookie Jalen Rose to their solid nucleus.

After years of contention, Clyde Drexler is asking for a trade and the Blazers appear ready to shake things up.

EASTERN CONFERENCE
The Orlando Magic look like a future dynasty with Shaq and Penny.

Riley, Ewing, and the defensive minded Knicks are looking to bully their way to a title.

The Heat may not be contending, but they're looking to build around Glen Rice and make a splash in free agency.

After a decade of success with Bird, McHale, and Parish, the Celtics are embarking on a rebuilding process.

Reggie Miller and the Pacers are looking like a serious contender with a boatload of nice players in their primes.

The Hornets look like one of the league's best up and coming teams with the duo of Mourning and Johnson up front.

Having just traded for Steve Smith, the Hawks are looking to build a contender around their solid backcourt.

The MJ-less Bulls are still a pretty good squad, but rumors that Jordan may return late in the season has everyone on pins and needles.

STRUCTURE/RULES

Sign up:
Initially limited to 20 teams. Remaining teams are contracted, players entered into 1995 contraction draft.
A GM may resign their post by contacting the commissioner with their need to withdraw. Inactive GMs will be replaced.
If original sign up was missed, Interested posters may be awarded an expansion franchise after each season.

Contraction draft:
Contraction draft order will be determined by historic 1995 record of remaining teams - worst to best.
The contraction draft is three rounds. All players from unclaimed teams will be entered into the contraction draft, along with all players who have been waived with the amnesty rule. GMs will be responsible for the duration of the drafted players contract; players from the contraction draft do NOT get new or rookie scale contracts. All undrafted players will be entered into the free agent pool. Trading/season will commence after the draft is finished.

Expansion rules:
At the end of each season, the league may be expanded by up to two teams. The league will be capped at 24 teams. If there are expansion franchises, each returning GM may protect eight players. Each team must leave at least two players unprotected, only two players may be selected from each team. In their first draft, expansion teams will pick starting fourth, in order of sign up.

Salary:
Use 1995 salaries x 2
Click team links on 1995 BBR for salary info.
45m cap (1m increases each season)
65m lux tax (1m increases each season
2009 rookie scale
Modern CBA
MLE is 10% of cap

**UPDATE - thanks to Gremz for hooking us up with http://www.prosportstransactions.com/basketball/Search/Search.php, an excellent resource to figure out the terms of your players contracts.
***(old) Length of contract is uncertain. There are some obvious jumps in salary of changes in a team that will dictate when a player becomes a free agent. EX. Shaq and Mourning in 1996. GMs must try their best to figure out a realistic length of contract, according to http://www.basketball-reference.com salaries on individual player pages. Please send the commissioner proposed terms for your players contracts because the commissioner won't have the time to look at all 150-200 players.

Rosters:
We will be using January 1995 rosters, before the trading deadline has passed. Jordan is not presently on the Bulls, but will be on their end of season roster.
Trades that were completed near the February deadline haven't occurred yet, meaning the Rockets are still trying to get Drexler.
One time amnesty provision: Any players making 800k or less original salary may be cut without penalty; one player may be cut without penalty, regardless of salary.
Teams must start with at least nine players on their roster before the contraction draft.

Season schedule:
(first season begins with contraction draft)
Two week reg. season/trading
Rankings/scoring
Draft
One week free agency

Draft:
With the exception of the contraction draft and considering the foresight we will have, each draft will be ONE round. Initially, the four teams that do not make the playoffs will be entered into the draft lottery, with the worst team having four chances, the second worst three, the third two, and the fourth one chance. The lottery may be expanded if expansion franchises are awarded. The draft lottery will be randomly determined at random.org.

GMs must post current season's statistics and awards:
G/PPG/RPG/APG/BPG/SPG, FG%/3FG%/FT%, PER
All-Star, All-NBA, MVP, DPOY, All-Defense
GMs should also post a brief description of their playing style.

Teams will be judged only on CURRENT SEASON statistics and play. Injuries/health will be considered. If a player is injured in a given season, it will help to see how effective that player was upon returning.

Scoring
Playoffs (1 x16 teams)
Win Now (12, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1)
Most Promising Young Team (5, 4, 3, 2, 1)
Biggest Improvement (5, 4, 3, 2, 1)
Best Offense (3, 2, 1)
Best Defense (3, 2, 1)

Tax Penalty (.2 per $1m)
Cut Penalty (.1 per $1m paid)

Points are added up at the conclusion of the game to determine final overall standings.

yeah, exactly.

Personally, I think it will be interesting because of the foresight we'll have as GMs. Contract negotiations will be very interesting and the drafts will look entirely different. I'm curious to see how the market adjusts to an influx of talent as well. I'm guessing that we'll see the biggest names still command huge money, but salaries will be a bit depressed for the rest of the league.

Another thing, Mascot - this sim will allow for long term rebuilding due to the span. Almost all players who are on rosters at the beginning will be retired by the end of the game, so teams that suck can realistically build through the draft and FA. You did a hell of a job with the NY squad in Be a GM, but many teams had assets that were too limited to really vault into contention with in a span of two seasons.

Sabas. There is a site that projects all actions that each individual player took throughout their careers (Ex. trades, date of contract extensions etc.) so that could be used to figure out the lengths of players' contracts as of 1995.

http://www.prosportstransactions.com/ba ... Search.php

Simply type a player's name and all of their info will appear.

No probs. Unfortunately there are some actions that go unnoticed (some players go 10 years without an extension listed) but overall should be helpful.

I'd take my bulls for this...it actually sounds pretty interesting, and my course load itself is a little lighter this year!

Co-GM's could be a good idea. I guess it simply comes down to the amount of interest that gathers.

Mind you, if there are enough participants, I'd be willing to jump in with Cellar if he agrees. He'll probably need all the help he can get.

Would you like to co-GM with someone or have you been active in a longer term game like this before? Sorry for asking, it's just to make sure that the game is really enjoyable for everyone and doesn't have a few unknown GMs dragging the game down.

In my experience he's been a pretty active guy. Both games have been fairly shiort term (4 weeks or so), but still.

I consider myself fairly active, and would definitely devote a lot of interest to this, but if you're worried about participation issues I understand.
