From Netsdaily.com

Yi Jianlian, in his first game back with Team China, scored 30 points in an exhibition game win over a team of All-Stars from Australia’s National Basketball League. Team China won, 87-67, building a lead in the middle quarters after falling behind early. It was Yi’s highest scoring game ever for Team China and Chinese basketball officials praised him for attacking the basket repeatedly after the team fell behind.

Here's the Link (also with Yi highlights from the game)

It was just a FIBA Asia warm-up game but it's nice to see none-the-less.

10 of 15 from 2's, 1 of 1 from 3's, 7 of 10 FT in 30 minutes.

He looked much bigger on the court, was very aggressive going inside and the poor aussie centers couldn't do much about it. The aussie team is decent, not great, has one former national team member and a couple borderline current NT players.

He seems have improved his finish around the basket, so are his hook shots. Still rushed some of his shots, still needs more polish on his post game, but the key is he played very aggressively and showed some cockiness and swagger.

Defending Yi

Post#3 » by Da_Kidd » Tue Jul 28, 2009 3:53 pm

No I'm not talking about defending him on the basketball court. I'm talking about trying to figure out why, after 2 years in playing in the NBA, Yi's already being considered a major bust in both the NBA circles as well as the fans.

Yi came into the league with much hype, especially after Yao Ming's success, often being compared to as the next Kevin Garnett. After he got drafted by the Bucks, he really wasn't giving any playing time to showcase what he can do. The times he got some burn, he had a difficult time adjusting to the level of play in the NBA. Let's not forget, it took Yao Ming 3 years before he even made an impact on a winning team.

I might be in the minority in this, but I think we haven't seen the best of Yi. With more experience in the NBA, he would be able to avoid settling for jump shots and avoid ticky tack fouls that would put him in the bench. I expect Yi to make huge strides next season (Year 3), anyone else with me on this?

I think this was awesome for Yi. My only think is he played about the Australian League's all stars. That's the same league Julius Hodge destroys. I'm impressed with the game, but I want to see how he does against the actual national teams at the end of the month.

Still, that's awesome for his confidence. Best scoring game ever for him with the Chinese National Team.

Trust me, Ricky Rubio is gonna get the same about of criticism if he doesn't produce right off the bat. His management team made the media go ballistic over Yi during pre-draft work outs and stuff. Some of it was good, some was obvious bad (see: his "Chairman" nickname, which I LOVE by the way lol). But with the amount of press he was getting and then the crap about not wanting to play for the Bucks and such, people basically demanded Yi to put up or shut up while his management just sits behind him not getting a major part of the blame. I say he's showing flashes. He's shown more flashes than worthless Andre Blatche. Crap I remember when Blatche was a FA a year or two ago people were saying he's the next Lamar Odom. The guy is straight up hot trash.

Either way, I'm one of the biggest Yi supporters on this site and I am hoping he shows up. Normally, guys turn a corner at some point during their 3rd season. I hope Yi does it this year, but I'm giving him to the end of his 4th season (which would be the 3rd with us) before I start pulling out the "B-word."

Look, Yi will never be a great player. Hes too soft. Even if he adds 50 pounds of muscle his personality is soft. He doesnt have that bang you out attitude to get things done. Hell never get a rebound over sahq, EVER! I never understood what the hype about him was during the draft. Hes tall, skinny, and can shoot. Ok so hes like the big Dirk? But not even close. If he ends up being an all star this year then thats all the better for us and him. If he sucks (which he probablly will) who cares? There never should have been any hype around him in the first place.

I'm with Lude on this one, this is the same league that Julius Hodges tears up...

But Hodge didn't have do it against an entire TEAM of "all-stars" while being the ONLY focus of the opposing team's defense.

Your argument is too narrow. How many people in the league can you name that can get a rebound over shaq, even at his age now? And do you remember how rail thin Dirk was when he entered the league. I still like the potential comparison, however, it seems to me that even as soft as Yi is, he actually attacks the basketball more than relys on the fadeaway like Dirk. They're definitely differences, but as for a ceiling, it's one of the better comparisons when you're discussing his potential.

While I agree the initial hype about him was blown out of proportion, the possibilities are clearly there in the kid. Now that he's the face of Chinese basketball, we'll see if he can handle the additional pressure. He had a pretty bad olympics last year and I think that hurt his confidence. If he plays well in the tournament they're about to enter, that could roll over into the season. I'm just being optimistic. Some progression is all I ask for. We're still rebuilding so I'm not asking for the world this season, just progression.

Yi looks really big. His hard work earlier this summer has definitely paid off. He looks great. This game is great for his confidence. I mean apparently Yao hasn't even scored 30 points before for the Chinese national basketball team.

So far he deserves all the negative press he's gotten, hopfully he can change that.
Remember even Ammo had strings of big games in his 1st couple healthy seasons, including a few 30 something point games.
Yi hasn't shown flashes of crap yet. He had one string of good games against some of the literally worst front courts in the NBA, whoopty doo. Even Diogu has done the exact same thing a few times over the course of his craptastic career.
Then he goes out with a broken finger for months and can't get back into the rotation.
Really? Are you kidding me?
