WT: Blue Jays Asked Angels For Four-Player Package

Post#1 » by BasketballAbyss » Wed Jul 29, 2009 3:38 pm

Los Angeles Times - The Angels remain in trade talks with a number of teams as Friday's non-waiver trade deadline approaches.

"I've had extensive conversations with several teams," general manager Tony Reagins said Tuesday. "If there was a match, we'd have a deal done. Right now, there hasn't been a fit."

The Angels have shown interest in Toronto's Roy Halladay.

According to reports, the Blue Jays asked the Angels for shortstop Erick Aybar, a big league starter like Jered Weaver or Joe Saunders, infield prospect Brandon Wood and a top prospect like pitcher Trevor Reckling or outfielder Peter Bourjos

I like Weaver and Aybar but what's the story on Wood, Reckling and Bourjos? Good offer?

I don't think this story has legs - if JP says he wants top prospects I don't think he'd settle for these guys. Any deal would have to include Walden, who isn't even having a good year. Weaver is a #2 starter in most rotations, and Joe Saunders is a mediocre pitcher.

I suspect because JP has done everything within his power to screw up the Halladay deal,
This would be a pretty reasonable package.

Weaver is solid, and we will control his rights for a few more seasons, Aybar is an instant upgrade at SS which gives us a solid young 2B/SS tandem with Hill.

Honestly, I think Aybar will end up being the best part of this potential deal.

Wood is okay...
But in 200 MLB at bats he is hitting .188 so take that for whats its worth.

If the deal was Weaver, Saunders, Aybar and Wood I would be more incline to be excited, but the offer is not terrible.

Saunders isn't a deal breaker. If Anaheim offered up Weaver, Aybar, and Wood, I'd hope Toronto would jump on it. It fulfills their stated desire to contend next season and beyond by plugging all three guys into their MLB lineup. The rumor also has Toronto getting Reckling, who I'd prefer over Saunders.

When all this started, my dream was Walden, Aybar, Wood, and Hank Conger. To walk away with two of them and an upgrade on the other two is fantastic. I don't think you could find a better deal.

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
