Cubs Acquire Grabow/Gorzelanny for Hart/Ascanio/Harrison

The Chicago Cubs are in the process of finalizing a trade for Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed reliever John Grabow, a source close to the situation told ESPNChicago.com.

The Cubs have been in the market for a left-handed reliever to firm up their bullpen, and Grabow has been on their radar for a while. Sean Marshall is currently the only lefty in the bullpen.

Before Thursday's game, Cubs general manager Jim Hendry told reporters talks had been heating up in the last day as the non-waiver trade deadline expires Friday afternoon.

Grabow has been a big name on the trade market as teams try to stock up for the stretch drive. The lefty set-up man is 3-0 with a 3.42 ERA for last-place Pittsburgh, with 41 strikeouts and 28 walks in 47 1/3 innings. He has two blown saves and 16 holds. The 30-year-old has a career 4.04 ERA, and a 3.29 ERA in 42 appearances against the Cubs.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting Tom Gorzelanny may be included in this deal, although the paper said the deal is not yet set.

Hendry + Pittsburgh has to mean giving up crap for a star and good supporting pieces for a playoff run. Why did Gorzelanny fall off the map last year?

The title is pretty confident that a deal is done. But no details.

I dont mind this move, but it depends on what we gave up. I like it depending on what prospect we gave up.

I feel the same way. Grabow is a very solid pickup and what we need in the pen. Gorzelanny is pretty bad now but there is a chance he could turn things around.

Grabow, 30, will complement lefty Sean Marshall in the bullpen. Grabow is 3-0 with a 3.42 ERA in 47 1/3 innings. He has 16 holds in 45 games. Left-handed batters are hitting .275 and righties are hitting .234 off Grabow, who is eligible for free agency after the season.

4:43pm: Finally a possible name as part of the package going to Pittsburgh. Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus, via Twitter, hears pitching prospect Jay Jackson may be in the deal.

Yeah I'm seeing multiple reports of Grabow and Gorzelanny for Hart, Ascano, and Harrison.

Sounds like it's Ascanio, Hart, and Harrison for Grabow and Gorz. I don't mind this trade at all.

This trade is pretty meh for both sides. At least the Cubs did not give up Jay Jackson, which was rumored.

It really isnt, but I like Harrison a lot.

If anything Hart and Ascaino are equal to what we acquired from a talent perspective.

If its Jackson/Hart/Ascanio for Grabow/Gorz then I am so not for this deal. Its a lot to give up for a guy who hasn't pitched well since 2006.

That's what I meant. No one really got a steal in this trade. We needed a left handed arm in the pen, and Pittsburgh liked some of the guys we had (they must like Hart over Gorzelanny). Solid trade.
