I can't believe i am saying this

Post#1 » by rak1974 » Wed Jul 29, 2009 1:16 pm

But I am looking at the avilable big men and what I believe the Hawks can spend on one. I think we should bring back Sheldon Williams. I am almost ashamed to say it. but I think we would get the most bang for our bucks with what left. I think he would do well as a back up PF/C bang get some rebounds, get you some fouls, block a few shoots, and be a body on the roster justin Case,LOL.

So I roster would be

Bibby/Teague
JJ/Crawford
MW/Evans
Smoove/Sheldon Williams
Horford/ZaZa/Petro or Siler

(DPN) RandMo
(DPN) Three Point defensive wing or maybe Flip, maybe

I have to go with Joe Smith and Petro.

EDIT: I'm also very open to Diogu and Elson though, if they are all still available.

I would rather go with Joe Smih as well. But I think it would cause us problems in resigning JJ and or Horford down the road. I believe that it wouldn't make that much of a difference 10 minutes of Joe Smith vs. 8 minutes of Shell Head...

Shelden Williams is in contact with LAL. If ha had two offers for the same price, sure he will choose LAL and not ATL.
Diogu is signing with NOH.

We really have to sign Joe Smith, because all other big guys supposed to interest ATL are signing with other teams.

Regarding Petro, it could take some weeks, but he has decided to play with french NT this summer instead of searching a contract first.
That's not a common case, but I understand it if he wants to show what he can do (he has almost not play this last season).
If he looks OK with the french team, I would seriously consider him too. He's young, maybe lack of motivation, but worth a try.

^ Tomorrow our national team, Hungary will play a friendly game against France. If the Hungarian sport channel will cover the game (which is not guaranteed), and Petro will play, I will write my thoughts about him.

I agree with D21, the potential targets are out of the radar. Now the Hawks have to take a look at players like Petro.

Again, Shelden Williams couldn't get minutes playing for Minnesota and Sacramento last season, why would we want him as a backup big here on a team that is actually a winner?

I don't have a problem with bringing Shelden back for a 4th slot. I just had a problem with him playing for us and losing out on greater talent.
If he can fill the role he is asked to fill as a 4th post player, bring him here. I think he could contribute, and IMO, contribute more than Siler, Hollins, and possibly Joe Smith.
We all know that Smith is on his last or next-to-last year in the league. Why not get someone who might fill a void should someone go down and have to log double digit minutes?

Shelden would be cap friendly with an offer.

I have to agree with bringing back Shelden if we could get him with the same deal we got Morris for... I mentioned this about a month ago. I don't think he was as bad as we all made him out to be mainly because we were pissed with the high pick for him. If we had taken him in the second round and he produced those numbers we would have been happy, so why not offer him second round money?

I won't no part of Mr. Candance Parker. I hope we do get Smith and I always wanted Petro on the team.

Shelden is just bad in general regardless of how short he fell of expectations. He is completely useless and will be out of the league within the next few years imo.

As I promised, I will write my thoughts about Petro, after tonight’s game. Unfortunately I couldn’t watch it live, because there wasn’t a TV channel that covered the game, but I followed anyways on the internet.

The Hungarian national team hasn’t got any big man. Our starting center is a 6’9” young kid, who plays in the Spanish second division. So, I was worried about this game, because of the size disadvantage that we got. It was a dramatically final second one point lose, for the unknown Hungarian team against a team that had in his lineup Diaw, Turiaf, Batum, F. Pietrus and young talent like Nando de Colo, Ajinca, Traore and Petro.

Petro had 8 minutes of playing time in which he had 4 points (2/2), 2 rebounds and 3 fauls. This is not a strong performance. Sure, you can’t do too much in 8 minutes, but against approximately 3 inch shorter guys you have to do better. Especially, if you are playing in the NBA. And he had in a very short period of time 3 fauls, as I said before against shorter and slower competition. He is known as a guy who has always had problem whit the fauls. I wish I could have seen him live on TV, so I could write you a more reliable scouting about him.

I really don’t think though, that he could be a solid free agent pick for this Hawks. As where this team, and the free agent market stands, I would rather sign Siler.

Sounds like Morris' stats in 8 minute plus 4 points and 2 rebounds.

playa_lev, the game was on JustinTV, and France played very badly, without any player as real playmaker. Hard to evaluate him on this one.

I found that Petro made better production on the previous games last week, with a 12pts (5-8)/8rbd in 14 minutes.
If french NT keep him, and they succeed to go to the Euro championship, it will be interesting to watch him IMO.

Ok, but I still hope, the Hawks could sign a better big, than Petro. :)

A better big ? Ah yes, I was just talking about Petro for another big if there is a spot, but first, ATL has to sign Joe Smith for sure.

I would welcome him back for pure comedy's sake. Plus, it would give me another reason to curse Billy Knight's eternal soul on those rare occassions Admiral Akbar made it onto the floor.

not really, he wasn't great, but not terrible either. when given the minutes as a back up PF/C, he was decent, his production was on the same level as Maxiell, Millsap, Lee, Glen Davis, Diaw, Craig Smith.

although SAC and MIN are bad teams, they are loaded at PF with Brad Miller, Artest, Love, and Craig Smith.

if you think of Shelden as a #5 overall pick..... he is just horrible, but if you just think of him as another back up PF, then he is decent.

with that said, i think Shelden would be okay pick up for a bargain price, but i would rather have Joe Smith, because i think he would give Dwight more of a challenge than Shelden.

Harry could you please tell us how Shelden's production is similar to the very competent big men you listed? All of those guys are far and away the better players.

As for Sacramento and Minnesota being "loaded" at PF, you said yourself in the first paragraph of your post that Shelden can also play center so I don't see how that would seriously curtail his PT. Not to mention Artest is not a PF nor did he play for Sacramento last year and Brad Miller is a center.

Shelden is not a decent backup PF. If he was he would have seen minutes for two teams that were giving minutes to the likes of Brian Cardinal and Mikki Moore in the low post.
