Marc Stein: Cavs to land Warrick

Post#1 » by George Muresan » Fri Jul 31, 2009 10:27 am

Hakim Warrick would be a solid backup and if he has an increase in minutes, he will clean up on boards and can help initiate a fast break. He can also make up for Shaq's lack of speed. Marc Stein, according to his twitter, has the Cavs locking up Warrick although he was undoubtedly going to Miluwaukee.

Marc Stein has written on his twitter account that he believes that former Grizzly forward Hakim Warrick will land in Cleveland.

Really hard to be angry about signing him for that amount of money if true. Great upside potential for us, and if nothing else he should be a pretty valuable guy to be included in a trade.

We'll see if its true though.

That's just speculation, but it is one of the more logical things that the Cavs have done this off season.

Apparently it's not speculation, they are offering him 1.9 M Biannual Exception. It seems that Ferry is in hot pursuit of a title this season.

The Cavaliers are offering free agent forward Hakim Warrick their biannual exception, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer

I have got my finger crossed. This would be a great get for Danny Ferry if it happens. He is exactly what we need at the PF position.

Ferry has very little control over this. Either Warrick will accept what we can offer or not.

I disagree OUtlaw. It absolutely matters how aggressively a GM pursues a player. It is not always money that lands a player. If a GM goes after a guy and shows then many times a player will prefer that team unless the money is just too great somewhere else. This is primarily where Ferry has been outworked. A lot of other GMs have been much more aggressive going after the guys they want.

I would be very pleased with this signing. At $1.9MM for 2 years that is a STEAL.

It's funny this offseason we basically swapped out scrubs like Wally/Wallace/Pavs for quality players like Shaq/Moon/Parker/Warrick - Ferry has done a solid job.

Imagine the highlight dunks from Shaq/LBJ/Moon/Warrick all season :o

We would have a pretty athletic team

I agree Pula. Maybe Ferry did come from the SA mold of managing, but when you have not won a thing, unlike SA, you have to sharpen up the sales pitch. What did Artest say?? LA wanted me more......hard not to believe him when you hear Danny Ferry speak in monotone

There's been a few examples of Ferry just not being the aggressor when pursuing guys. I am not talking about times when other teams could offer so much more than the Cavs, but when the money is practically the same, the Cavs have not fared well. You cannot tell me that playing next to Lebron James is not attractive. Based on the talent (or lack thereof) that we had on roster, players should be looking at Cleveland because of Lebron James and an opportunity to earn playing time.

Back to Hakim Warrick. If he wants to win and have a chance to play a lot Cleveland is the logical choice. He may be a better fit starting in Cleveland than Varejao next to Shaq. I could see him grabbing a starting role or playing significant minutes off the bench. While Hickson may improve, nothing is guranteed and with the age of Shaq and Big Z I would expect if Warrick joins that he will get a lot of playing time along with Varejao and Hickson.

Artest said that LA wanted him more but the bottom line was he wanted to play in LA. He's unusual though 99% of the time these decisions are made by whomever offers the most. The advantage that the Cavs have is that I'm sure that no matter where he signs Warrick believes that he will be underpaid. So he likely would want to only sign a short term deal and playing with the Cavs gives him 10 times the visibility than he'd get from the other people pursuing him.

It's funny this offseason we basically swapped out scrubs like Wally/Wallace/Pavs for quality players like Shaq/Moon/Parker/Warrick - and it still may not be enough to match the talent of LA (but we would have a chance).

I'm not sure who exactly would start but look at the depth chart:

PG - Mo/Delonte/Gibson
SG - Delonte/Parker/Green
SF - LBJ/Moon/Jawad
PF - Warrick(?)/Varejao/JJ/DJ
C - Shaq/Z/Varejao

I mean that is the best team we have ever put around Lebron BY FAR. No dead weight scrubs, every guy on that roster can play.

Imagine all the dunks we would see from LBJ/Shaq/Moon/Warrick

This def is the best supporting cast LeBron has ever had. The upgrades we got over this summer might not look like a lot but its definitely huge. I think we still are the best team in the east with this lineup. Hopefully we can give the Lakeshow a run for there money. I like our chances though. People argue that Anthony Parker, Jamario Moon, (and hopefully Hakim Warrick) aren't anything to get excited about but playing next to LeBron will definitely improve there efficiency and make them look a lot better then they really are. Just ask Delonte West, Flip Murray, Daniel Gibson, and Andy V.

Hakim Warrick has agreed to terms with the Milwaukee Bucks. The Cavs and Sixers were also pursuing Warrick. The athletic 6-9 Warrick can play both forward spots and will play ample minutes for Milwaukee.

The Bucks are nearing the luxury tax threshold but still have rights to restricted free-agent Ramon Sessions. The Knicks are reportedly close to offering Sessions some part of their mid-level exception in a multi-year deal. The Bucks would have 10 days to match.

Looks like Warrick went for the money.

I'm curious what exactly MIL is doing - they are going to let Sessions go to sign Warrick? Seems like a poor choice but who knows.

I would imagine Ferry goes for Joe Smith now?

Just a year ago Mil was arguing that they wanted to move Williams to free up time for Sessions.

Milwaukee has to be one of the worst run franchises in the league. What on earth are they doing there?
