Reported: Wash to Detroit for French/Robles
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
The Tigers acquired pitcher Jarrod Washburn from the Mariners, according to Mike Salk of ESPN radio in Seattle. Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports agrees, saying the Mariners will get pitcher Luke French and another prospect. MLB Network tells us the other prospect is pitcher Mauricio Robles.
Washburn, a Scott Boras client and free agent after the season, projects as a Type B. He's managed to post a 2.64 ERA in 133 innings this year.

That headline is misleading. French has a 3.38 ERA in 5 starts and 2 relief appearances with Detroit.

Re: Reported: Wash to Detroit for 2 Minor Leaugers
Oh man. I cannot get over this trade. This is amazing.
We get Luke French, a Lefty, who is under club control for 6 years (who had a good showing against the M's a month or so ago. 5 IP 2 Runs allowed). He is only 23.
We also got Robles, who is a strike out machine. He's in upper A ball right now, but he strikes out a ridiculous amount of batters. He projects as a RP and basically is as good or better than all the guys we gave up in the Snell Wilson trade.
So so so so so so so happy.

Re: Reported: Wash to Detroit for French/Robles
Well we were wondering what the rotation would look like if Wash was traded. Looks like
Felix
Bedard
and then three to choose from French/Vargas/Morrow/RRS/Snell/Olson
Seems like Z is serious about this team making a run next year.

At this point, I would have to think Mariners would maybe consider shutting down Bedard to give a shot to one more of these guys competing for the ladder spots of the rotation.

Re: Reported: Wash to Detroit for French/Robles
Everything recent I could find says that Mauricio Robles is a real score for the M's. A top prospect in the Tigers' organization. It looks like he's a pitcher who could make the major league club for the 2012 season.

What a great trade. We really got some good young talent. I especially like what I've seen from French.

Re: Reported: Wash to Detroit for French/Robles
With the addition of Robles in the trade for Washburn, as far as I can tell the M's have a nice handful of young pitching prospects down on the farm now:
All these guys have at least something interesting about them, something that gives you the impression that they all have shots at being major leaguers some day, and that maybe a couple of them will be strong major leaguers some day.
--Juan Ramirez (21)
--Michael Pineda (20)
--Phillipe Aumont (20)
--Mauricio Robles (20)
--Danny Cortes (22)
--Maikel Cleto (20)

Re: Reported: Wash to Detroit for French/Robles
nice trade and nice article:

the real key to this trade was the 20-year-old Venezuelan in Class A ball, Mauricio Robles. The fact that he made the Venezuelan team at the WBC tells you a lot.
His strikeout numbers tell you more.
Since advancing to High A ball, he's got 40 in 35 innings. One of my sources described him as "easily a top-five prospect in the entire Tigers system.''

Re: Reported: Wash to Detroit for French/Robles
Nice deal! French looked very good when he pitched against us a little while back. And to think last year I was pissed they passed on getting rid of the salary and taking on Boof Bonser.
I think you're forgetting that Washburn isn't very good. Great outfield defense and a big park worked wonders for Washburn as a flyball prone lefty.

Commentary: Losing Robles could be costly for Tigers
Tigers fans should delight in the Jarrod Washburn trade.
For the next two months.
After that, prepare to take a long, anguished bite on a lead bullet, because Mauricio Robles has a chance at being for Seattle what Jair Jurrjens has been for the Atlanta Braves.
Robles, a left-hander, is that good.
Fans don't pay much attention to the minor leagues, particularly to the lower rungs, but they should -- and for this reason.
Robles is 20 years old. He was promoted earlier this year from Single A West Michigan to Single A Lakeland. That's a big step for a kid who can't yet buy a drink.
And yet he has flourished. He has 40 strikeouts in 35 innings and only 14 walks. He had a 4-2 record and a 3.60 earned-run average.
He would have been pitching next year at Double A Erie and probably a year or so later in Detroit, barring injury.
That's why the Mariners happily sent Washburn to Detroit rather than bite on any of the other drooling suitors who wanted to pry away Washburn for the remainder of this season (he becomes a free agent this autumn).
The Mariners wanted Robles. Luke French, the other pitcher the Tigers included in today's deal, is a solid, light-tossing finesse pitcher who has a role in the big leagues, probably in long relief.
But it was Robles that made today's deal possible. And it will be Robles that Tigers fans may dread having lost in the years ahead.
Looks like people in Detroit are not on board with this trade, but I love it for the Ms

Isn't it fun to NOT be the one saying "dammit our GM totally screwed us again?"

Re: Reported: Wash to Detroit for French/Robles
Enjoy French. He was solid in his five starts. Neither guy was top ten in the Tigers system, so it really doesn't hurt losing them. Washburn might not have alot of years left, but we only need him for the playoffs.
Verlander/Jackson/Washburn/Porcello/Galarraga will help the Tigers in the postseason and then Washburn will be a free agent and could possibly re-sign with Seattle.

Ha. I get it now.
I won't lie, I was PISSED off at the MLB Amateur Draft for a little while there, but it's beginning to grow on me because of deals like this. So far, Z has taken to drafting his future hitters and trading for his future pitchers. I think it's a workable strategy.
