Walter Sharpe trade

Post#1 » by Trueblood » Fri Jul 31, 2009 7:42 pm

I just learned taht Walter Sharpe and Sonny Weems were traded to Milwaukee for Malik Allen. However, if I'm not mistaken, Sharpe was dealt from Detroit to Denver less than 60 days ago. Since he is being packaged to Milwaukee, doesn't he have to wait 60 days before being dealt from the time he was traded form Detroit?

He just can't be traded with another player within 60 days, and since Denver has a TPE large enough to acquire Malik Allen they do not need to aggregate the salaries of Weems & Sharpe. Therefore the deal is broken into three different parts from both teams perspective.

From the Nuggets persepective:

Part 1: Denver trades Walter Sharpe for essentially nothing (Creating a $736,420 TPE)
Part 2: Denver trades Sonny Weens for essentially nothing (Creating a $736,420 TPE)
Part 3: Denver acquires Malik Allen (Using a TPE) for essentially nothing.

From the Bucks Perspective:

Part 1: Milwaukee acquires Walter Sharpe (using the Vet Min Exception) for essentially nothing.
Part 2: Milwaukee acquires Sonny Weems (Using the Vet Min Exception) for essentially nothing.
Part 3: Milwaukee trades Malik Allen for essentially nothing (Creating a $1,300,000 TPE).

BTW, Do I get an award for the most uses of the term "essentially nothing" in the history of RealGM?

Yes. Congratulations. You win the award. The award is essentially nothing, though.

By the way, the Bucks can't use the minimum salary exception to acquire Wems, beCause he signed a three year minimum salary deal using the MLE, not the MSE.

I did not realize that, so I guess they will have to use one of their TPE's, I suggest using the Richard Jefferson TPE of $983,333 since it is fairly useless anyways. They also have a $2,181,814 TPE from the Mo Williams trade, but being that it is of a higher dollar value it should be preserved (although only for a month since it is set to expire around 8-13-09). I suppose they could also say the trade is Allen for Weems and thus reduce the new TPE to a paltry $563,580, but that isn't the most beneficial construction of the deal. In the end it probably doesn't really matter because the Bucks will not likely use these TPE's. Anyways, that is a lot of rambling for something of so little relevance.

Thanks for the info. I guess even capologists like myself get stumped from time to time. :(

I was thinking along those lines though. Meaning that they could do Allen for Sharpe straight up using a trade exception, thus nullifying the 60 day wait, and then get Weems using the trade exception that Milwaukee would get for shedding salary on Allen for Sharpe. The NBA then reports it as one singular deal under the assumption that bozos like me aren't scratching their head.

There have probably been some posts about the Pau Gasol trade that used the phrase as many times, or more...
