New Jays President?

Post#1 » by Geddy » Fri Jul 31, 2009 8:52 pm

Looks like Paul Beeston has found a full time candidate to replace Paul Godfrey. If that's the case, then I wonder what impact it had on the moves, and non-moves that occured today.

Article from yesterday:

A new Blue Jays president is about to come over the hill ... "to save the day" as the song goes.

Well, not in time for the non-waiver trade deadline on Friday, mind you, but Paul Beeston, a long-term CEO on an interim basis, appears to have found a replacement for president Paul Godfrey.

The new president will take over at the end of the season, according to baseball insiders.

Beeston had Rick Welts of the Phoenix Suns in Dunedin this spring and hoped to hire Welts, but the Suns promoted him to president and CEO. The only other name to surface as been Stan Kasten, president of the Washington Nationals.

The Jays executives spent the early part of this week in a think tank session/retreat north of the city.

Replace Godfrey? Godfrey hasn't been with the Jays for a while now. Beeston's hiring his own replacement.

As for Kasten, he's stated in the past that he intends to stay with the Nats, but I suppose it's still possible.

Beeston was never considered to be Godfrey's replacement, his job was to come on simply to oversee things until he could find a REAL long-term replacement for Godfrey.

Obviously Beeston is just an interim guy, but he's still holding the position and he has made some changes since taking the office. It's simply inaccurate to say that he's hiring Godfrey's replacement.

He was previously the President of the Hawks, Thrashers, and either Braves or Falcons. I guess that doesn't really help his resume.

The most telling part of the article is that JP wasn't allowed to complete the Halladay deal; it was all going through Beeston, a man who had to rely entirely on scouts. Seems reminiscent of JFJ with the Leafs, who wasn't given the authority to trade Sundin. I think there are very long odds that JP is back next year, which might explain the lack of movement as Toronto continues to freefall.

JP is obviously gone because a new President will almost certainly want to bring in his own guy.

Bob McCown has been pushing for Kasten forever. Basically we'd get a guy who knows his way around the business.

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
