Marcus Thompson II: Belinelli Traded to Toronto
The Warriors cleared up some of the gluttony in the backcourt. I just confirmed through a team source that Marco Belinelli has indeed been traded to Toronto for swingman Devean George, as Yahoo Sports reported earlier.

Adrian Wojnarowski: Raptors nab Belinelli -UPDATED
After failing to meet the initial expectations that surrounded his arrival as a first-round pick two years ago, the Golden State Warriors have traded guard Marco Belinelli(notes) to the Toronto Raptors, league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday night.

The Raptors will send Devean George and cash considerations to the Warriors.

Toronto GM Bryan Colangelo and his assistant GM, Maurizio Gherardini, have long been admirers of Belinelli and tried to draft him in 2007. The Warriors selected the Italian guard with the 18th pick of the draft, and a sensational debut in that year’s summer league led everyone, including Golden State coach Don Nelson, to believe Belinelli had a promising future in the free-flowing Warriors offense. Yet, he played little as a rookie, and although Belinelli averaged over 20 minutes and nearly nine points a game last season, the Warriors clearly lost some faith in his future.

Belinelli joins a Toronto organization that is fascinated with the European player. He’ll join fellow Italian Andrea Bargnani(notes) (Italy), guard Jose Calderon(notes) (Spain) and Hedo Turkoglu(notes) (Turkey), among others, with Toronto.

George, 31, arrived in Toronto this summer as part of the Shawn Marion(notes) sign-and-trade with Dallas. He averaged 3.4 points a game for the Mavericks a year ago. George played seven seasons with the Lakers, before joining Dallas in 2006.

Doug Smith: The deal is done, Belinelli for George
For almost a year, Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo has been chasing guard Marco Belinelli of the Golden State Warriors.

He got him.

A conference call to confirm the deal is scheduled for late Thursday morning as the Raptors have traded Devean George and “a little bit of cash” to Golden State for the 6-5 guard from Italy.

We’ll have more on this in the morning, and its implications on the possible signing of free agent Carlos Delfino but the deal provides the kind of shooting off the bench and depth the Raptors covet.

Belinelli averaged 8.9 points and 2.1 assists per game with the Warriors last season. The 23-year-old is comfortable playing both guard position spots and has been a target of Colangelo’s for a year.

Steinmetz: Golden State Sends Marco Belinelli to Toronto for Devean George, Cash
If you want proof that Anthony Morrow is a big part of the Warriors' plans, consider for a moment that they just sent away they guy he was supposed to compete against for minutes.

The Warriors traded shooting guard Marco Belinelli to the Toronto Raptors for small forward Devean George and cash considerations. The deal will be announced on Thursday, according to a source.

The cash considerations are that the Raptors will pick up most of George's contract, worth $1.6 million in 2009-10. To that extent, George will be helpful to the Warriors even if he never plays a game for them. It certainly goes further in explaining why the Warriors would give up on Belinelli, just 23.

George played 43 games last year for the Mavericks and averaged 3.4 points per game. He shot 38 percent from the field, including 29 percent from 3-point range.

He ended up in Toronto as part of the sign-and-trade that sent Hedo Turkoglu to Toronto and Shawn Marion to the Mavericks.

Belinelli is likely going to get more of a chance to play in Toronto than he got in Golden State under Don Nelson. Belinelli played sparingly as a rookie, then received inconsistent minutes during an injury-plagued 2008-09.

He averaged 13.4 points per game when he got 20 or more minutes, but there were also 15 times when Belinelli took a DNP-CD. Depending on how Toronto's backcourt shakes out, Belinelli could be in the starting two-guard mix along with Antoine Wright and Jarrett Jack.

Mostly, the move is a vote of confidence for Morrow, who led the league in 3-point shooting (and set the scoring record earlier this month in summer league) despite going undrafted out of Georgia Tech. Between Morrow and rookie Stephen Curry, it was hard to see any kind of meaningful role for Belinelli.

From TimKs blog posted above^^
But even I didn’t imagine Nelson/Riley would give away Belinelli to Toronto for something as meager as George, who I know fairly well since I covered him his rookie year with the Lakers and have watched him fairly closely in the many years since.

This is just a dump. A we-don’t-know-what-to-do-with-this-talented-player dump. A terrible, misguided, noxious dump by a team now run by an erratic, tired coach and a GM who does his bidding.

(If they can’t do any better than this for the Wright dumping, whew!)

George is 8 years older than Belinelli, by the way. He has a $1.6M expiring contract this year, but Belinelli’s would’ve expired next summer if the Warriors didn’t pick up his option, plus Belinelli is MUCH MUCH BETTER than George.

Warriors fans might remember George from the 2007 playoffs, when he was a key Mavericks’ role player, and I think he even got a defensive turn or two against Baron Davis. George shot 20% in that series, so yes, he’s fantastic. (No, he never played for Nelson in Dallas.)

The only possible logic for this, I got from Marcus T: The Warriors were not planning on picking up Belinelli’s fourth-year option, which would’ve left him as a lame-duck all this season, potentially in a poisonous mood.

That’s what happens to bad teams. Bad, crumbling, weird (add: financially troubled) teams.

DimeMag
So much for the Marco Belinelli experiment, at least in Golden State. He’s been traded to the Raptors for Devean George, which sounds like a case of either Belinelli being seriously undervalued, or his defense is just THAT awful. Belinelli can push Antoine Wright for minutes as DeMar DeRozan’s backup; George is one of the premier “How does he keep getting work?” guys in the League

http://dimemag.com/2009/07/hawks-hornet ... hot-at-la/

Belinelli? Buono!
The 23-year-old guard has, admittedly, had an “average” start to his NBA career. After struggling through his rookie season, Belinelli had a chance to bust out a little bit last year … given the glut of injuries the Warriors were experiencing. He started 23 games for the Bay Area Boys - including an impressive 15-game stretch from mid-December to mid-January where he averaged more than 15 points per game and earned a ton of respect from his teammates.

Speaking about Belinelli back in December 2008, then-teammate Stephen Jackson told the San Francisco Chronicle:

“When (Marco) wasn’t playing, when he said he wanted to be traded and all that stuff, I was like, man, we’re going to lose a good player. He’s a guy that got caught up in a numbers game, and I’ve been through that too. I’m glad he’s taking advantage of his opportunity, because that’s what it’s all about.”

That opportunity will now come in Toronto.

MT2 Blog: "Devean George is here to stay."
More on Marco Trade

By Marcus Thompson
Thursday, July 30th, 2009 at 11:12 am

So the Warriors did get some cash from Toronto, which did provide a financial incentive. Not much to dance in the streets about, but cash nonetheless. Every little bit helps these days, no doubt.

Also, Devean George is here to stay. The Warriors want George. They didn’t get him to buy him out. They feel like he might be able to contribute something because of his size and experience (went to three Finals with the Lakers). GM Larry Riley has wanted to add some veteran experience anyway. George, at his best, can stick the 3 and match-up against the difficult threes of the league like Ron Artest and LeBron James.

Of course, they are hoping to get the George from the Lakers. The George that was in Dallas was often hurt and hardly heard from. But if George has nothing left, not much is lost because he is cheap.

It can’t go understated, I don’t think, that the Warriors just traded out of a tough decision, perhaps a lose-lose. If they would have extended Belinelli on the 31st, that would’ve been a sizeable commitment for a guy who wasn’t going to play much. If they didn’t, they could’ve had a distraction on their hands all season. This would’ve been the story going into the season, that the Warriors have given up on Marco. Now, come Oct. 31, no one will be thinking on Belinelli.

The Warriors now have $9 million in expiring contracts (I mistakenly had close to $10M before, but that was because I had Acie Law down for $2.9 - what he’s set to make if the Warriors pick up the option - and not $2.2, which he will make this season). If they decide not to pick-up Brandan Wright’s fourth-year option, that number jumps to $11.7M in expiring contracts.

http://www.ibabuzz.com/warriors/2009/07 ... rco-trade/

Marcus Thompson II: Belinelli is traded to Raptors
Warriors general manager Larry Riley has trimmed the fat off his perimeter, and guard Marco Belinelli was excess.

Belinelli, a fan favorite at Oracle Arena, was traded to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday for veteran swingman Devean George, according to multiple team sources. Riley declined to comment when reached by phone Wednesday evening.

Golden State still has Monta Ellis, Stephen Jackson, rookie Stephen Curry, Anthony Morrow and Kelenna Azubuike in the backcourt. And that's not to mention point guards Speedy Claxton and Acie Law, who were acquired from Atlanta in June. And then there's restricted free-agent point guard C.J. Watson.

Belinelli was the Warriors' first-round draft pick in 2007, No. 18 overall. After hardly playing as a rookie, Belinelli got a chance to play last season thanks to the Warriors' many injuries. He averaged 8.9 points in 21 minutes. He shot 39.7 percent from 3-point range, averaged 2.1 assists per game and emerged as perhaps the team's best perimeter defender.

But he played only 42 games (starting 23) thanks to a sprained right ankle he sustained in January. He never seemed to get back to the form that had him in coach Don Nelson's favor. He sat out the final 14 games of the season.

In addition to the sour note on which he ended the season, several other factors made Belinelli expendable. Nelson's deeming Jackson and Ellis the starting backcourt significantly cut into the available minutes.

Also, the drafting of Curry — who could get minutes in the backcourt immediately — and the continued progress of Morrow pushed Belinelli down the depth chart.

This doesn't appear to be a cost-cutting move, as Belinelli is set to make $1.55 million this season and George is set to make $1.6 million. The Warriors, however, would have had to make a tough decision come the end of this offseason.

The Warriors had until Oct. 31 to pick up their option on Belinelli's fourth season for $2.38 million. They avoided that decision by shipping Belinelli now for George, eliminating a possible distraction during the season (if they decided not to pick up Belinelli's option but kept him around).

The Warriors did pick up a veteran swingman who once was known for being able to defend and stick a 3-pointer. But George — who was traded from Dallas to Toronto earlier this month in the Shawn Marion deal — hasn't been the same since leaving the Los Angeles Lakers. In three seasons with Dallas, he averaged 4.6 points per game on 38.1 percent shooting. He didn't play in 90 games during that span because of injury or coach's decision.

But, combined with Claxton and Law, he gives the Warriors just shy of $10 million in expiring contracts. That is a significant chunk of currency to spend on the trade market in their search to add a difference-maker.

Warriors.com: Warriors Acquire Devean George From Toronto
Guard Marco Belinelli Traded To Raptors; Golden State Also Receives Cash Considerations
July 30, 2009

The Golden State Warriors have acquired guard/forward Devean George from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for guard Marco Belinelli, the team announced today. As part of the deal, the Warriors also receive cash considerations.

“We’re looking forward to adding a veteran with Devean’s experience to our squad,” said General Manager Larry Riley. “He is obviously a proven winner and has been on several very successful teams during his career, which is something we feel is important when you look at the youth on our roster. He is a versatile player and someone who we feel can contribute both on and off the court.”

George, 31, is a 10-year NBA veteran who has played the last three seasons with the Dallas Mavericks after spending the first seven years of his career with the Los Angeles Lakers. Last season he appeared in 43 games for the Mavs, averaging 3.4 points and 1.8 rebounds in 16.5 minutes. Originally drafted with the 23rd overall selection in the 1999 NBA Draft, George owns career averages of 5.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 18.7 minutes in 585 regular-season contests. Additionally, the 6-8 guard/forward has appeared in 86 playoff games during his career, which includes four trips to the NBA Finals (2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004) while with the Lakers and winning three-straight NBA Championships from 2000-02.

Belinelli, 23, appeared in 42 games for the Warriors last season, averaging 8.9 points and 2.1 assists in 21.0 minutes per contest. Originally drafted by Golden State with the 18th overall selection in the 2007 NBA Draft, Belinelli owns career averages of 6.2 points, 1.4 assists and 15.0 minutes in 75 games over two seasons.

Raptors.com: Raptors Acquire Belinelli From Golden State
July 30, 2009

The Toronto Raptors announced Thursday they have acquired guard Marco Belinelli (Mar-co Belle-EE-NELLI) from the Golden State Warriors in exchange for forward Devean George and cash considerations.

"Marco fills a void at the wing position where his shooting and scoring strengths will be needed. Marco's versatility and playmaking abilities make him a very valuable piece for us,” said Bryan Colangelo, Raptors President and General Manager.

Belinelli, the 18th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, averaged 8.9 points, 2.1 assists, 1.7 rebounds and 21.0 minutes in 42 games last season with Golden State. He registered four 20-point games during the 2008-09 campaign, including a career-high 27 points December 12, 2008 at Atlanta.

Through 75 career games Belinelli owns a .395 mark from three-point range (68-for-172). As a rookie he appeared in 33 games, averaging 2.9 points in 7.3 minutes.

Prior to joining the Warriors, the 23 year-old, 6-foot-5 guard from Bologna, Italy, played professionally in Italy for five seasons. In 33 games during the 2006-07 season with Fortitudo Bologna in Serie A, Belinelli averaged 16.4 points, while shooting .544 (99-for-182) from the field. In 13 Euroleague contests, he averaged 12.9 points on .438 (32-for-73) from the field.

A member of the Italian National Team, Belinelli averaged 13.5 points per game during the 2006 FIBA World Championship, including 25 points in a losing effort against Team USA in preliminary round play.

George was acquired by the Raptors on July 9, 2009 in a four-team sign and trade deal along with Hedo Turkoglu and Antoine Wright.

John Schuhmann, NBA.com: Some picks from '07 Draft running out of time to develop
Brandan Wright, PF, Golden State (No. 8)

It wasn't too hard to see this coming. As a freshman with length and athleticism, but one who was inconsistent and not nearly the best player on his college team, Wright was drafted for potential. Two years later, it has yet to be realized. Worse yet, we've seen the same things at Golden State that we saw at North Carolina.

Injuries were an issue last season, but so were inconsistency and the whims of Warriors coach Don Nelson. Of course, the Warriors also have a slew of players that do the same things that Wright can do, only better -- such as rising second-year forward Anthony Randolph.

It's very possible that the Warriors won't pick up Wright's fourth-year option by Oct. 31, making him an unrestricted free agent next summer. A change of scenery might not be a bad solution for the forward who doesn't turn 22 for another two months.

Marcus Thompson II: Numbers cost Belinelli
The departure of Warriors guard Marco Belinelli was, put simply, a numbers game — in more ways than one.

Primarily, the number of dollars involved prompted Golden State to ship its third-year guard to Toronto for veteran swingman Devean George in a trade the team announced Thursday. The Warriors had already decided they wouldn't pick up their team option on Belinelli, worth $2.4 million, for the 2010-11 season.

Another factor was the number of minutes, or lack thereof, available for Belinelli. Management is so impressed with second-year man Anthony Morrow that it lists him as the second-string shooting guard behind Stephen Jackson.

No matter how it added up, Belinelli was on his way out.

"I feel like Marco wasn't going to play too much because we're making the commitment to play Morrow," Warriors General Manager Larry Riley said. "We're ready to commit to him. ... Having known that we were not going to (pick up Belinelli's option by the Oct. 31 deadline), we decided to take the opportunity to get a player back who maybe can contribute. We thought that was a reasonable way to go."

Riley still has a glut of point guards on his hands. What's more, the one point guard he doesn't have under contract — unrestricted free agent C.J. Watson — he wants to keep. "I like C.J., and I hope it turns out that he's with us," Riley said.

Riley said the Warriors are still looking to enhance their roster. Golden State has $9 million in expiring contracts — point guards Speedy Claxton ($5.2 million), Acie Law ($2.2 million) and George ($1.6 million). That is significant currency on the trade market.

Riley said he would still like to add beef to the lineup. After waiving third-year big man Jermareo Davidson earlier this week, the Warriors could use another center.

Golden State probably will try to fill both needs with one player based on its desire to save salary cap space for the 2010-11 season.

"We also have an eye on cap management," Riley said. "We've got our cap to where it's in pretty good shape. ... I would be remiss if I said we didn't want some flexibility next summer."

Hollinger Chat:
Ben (SF)
I was just thinking how much the Warriors needed another older swingman. What a coup!

John Hollinger(3:04 PM)
Pretty bizarre trade, huh? The Raptors are paying most of George's salary, so this was mostly a salary dump by Golden State figuring they wouldn't play Belinelli anyway. Seems a strange time to give up on the guy, but that's the Warriors for you. I imagine George will be strictly a 4 for them.

"Bryan Colangelo" (Toronto)
Should I walk on water for my next big offseason move?

John Hollinger(3:09 PM)
Calm down, it's Marco Belinelli. I'm not a big fan of his, but free is a good price. The one thing I like about what Colangelo is doing is that he's said to heck with it, I'm going to build the kind of team I've always wanted to have with nothing but shooters and ballhandlers, and we'll see if it works or not. The money is high for a lot of these guys and it could be a train wreck, but it's gonna be interesting, that's for sure.

Warriors Fan (Warriorsland)
Can we make the playoffs this year?Do you think Monta Ellis will be an allstar?

John Hollinger(3:40 PM)
Warriors have an intriguing mix of talent, definitely ... but they also have a seriously dysfunctional situation in the front office and I've yet to see any evidence that they'll rank in the top 28 in defense.

Jessica (Miami)
Tell me that the Warriors aren't going to trade Brandan Wright for pennies on the dollar now? I hear that Don Nelson wants him gone and that he's on the trading block.....

John Hollinger(4:01 PM)
I think that may happen, and if it does the Warriors deserve to be made fun of. I think Wright will be an excellent player for his next team, it's too bad his current one seems to think so little of him.

Rob Kurz News:
• The Cavs have been in talks with both Joe Smith and Rob Kurz, who are very different power forwards. As of Thursday they have not formally offered a contract to either of them. Brown is known to favor the Cavs re-signing Smith. If the Cavs aren't able to land a player this week then they could turn to Smith as soon as next week. Kurz, a shooter, is an option that might not play out until later in the summer.

Rusty Simmons: Warriors trade Belinelli for George, cash
The Warriors cleared out some of their backcourt logjam and found an experienced presence to help balance a youth-filled roster, acquiring wing Devean George and money from Toronto on Thursday in exchange for guard Marco Belinelli.

The move acts as a vote of confidence for second-year guard Anthony Morrow, as it should open more minutes for him. The team still has guards Monta Ellis, Stephen Jackson, Stephen Curry, Kelenna Azubuike, Acie Law, Speedy Claxton and possibly restricted free agent C.J. Watson. General manager Larry Riley said he's not done dealing.

"We'd like to add another piece," he said, "and we're still working."

Throughout the offseason, Riley has said he wants to find an experienced post player, and his last two moves could make that easier. Picking up Law, Claxton and George in trades gives the Warriors about $10 million in contracts that expire at season's end, and moving Law and/or Claxton would make sense given the Warriors' glut of point guards.

Toronto will pay most of George's $1.6 million salary. The 31-year-old, who is 6-foot-8, played the last three seasons with Dallas after spending his first seven years with the Lakers. He was obtained by the Raptors this month in the Shawn Marion deal. He averaged 3.4 points and 1.8 rebounds in 16.5 minutes last season. He has appeared in 86 playoff games, including four trips to the NBA Finals.

Belinelli, 23, would have been hard-pressed to find minutes, though he averaged 8.9 points and 2.1 assists in 21 minutes a game last season. Originally selected with the 18th overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft, Belinelli's career averages are 6.2 points and 1.4 assists in 15 minutes a game.

MT2 Blog: Should Warriors Pick Up Wright’s Option?
While Warriors management had already decided it wasn’t going to pick up the fourth-year option on guard Marco Belinelli, the same decision awaits on Brandan Wright. They have until Oct. 31 (technically, I think, it is the day before the season starts) to lock him up for 2010-11 at better than $3M.

I have heard nothing about them not picking up his option. If I were a betting man, my money is on them picking up the option. The Warriors do like Wright and are banking on him to play at PF (though he is looking like Anthony Randolph’s back-up instead of the starter, which he was deemed by Nellie late last season).

But, it wouldn’t hurt to have another expiring contract, and maybe playing for a deal would light a fire under Wright and produce a breakout season. It’s worth considering, but in the end he probably has more value to the Ws on the court.

If the Warriors do pick-up his option, it is probably an indicator that they don’t expect to trade him. Wright was involved in the offer to Phoenix. Assuredly, part of Wright’s appeal to another team is that they would have the choice on whether to pick up the option (as the Warriors do with Acie Law). Of course, the Warriors still could trade him after exercising their option, but Wright would be less valuable.

BW went to summer school in Chapel Hill and wound up playing a lot of basketball. Word is that he is healthy and the Warriors are happy with the strides he’s made. He still fits the Ws style of play and is arguably their best inside scoring option. Plus, Randolph could use the competition.

http://www.ibabuzz.com/warriors/2009/07 ... ts-option/

Will Voigt to coach the Bakersfield Jam
"Will Voigt was kind of the sleeper," Ellis said. "He doesn't have the NBA experience but he knows the X's and O's."

Voigt also knows a thing or two about being voted in as coach. That's how he acquired his previous position as head coach of the Vermont Frost Heaves of the Premier Basketball League (formerly the American Basketball Association).

Sports Illustrated senior writer Alexander Wolff established the franchise in 2006, came up with two choices for the coaching position and allowed fans to vote. Voigt, a native of Vermont, won in a landslide and led the team to the championship in 2007 and 2008.

Ellis called Voigt, 33, "a diamond in the rough," and said he comes highly recommended.

"(Voigt) met with the Golden State Warriors and (general manager) Larry Harris recommended him and said he felt comfortable sending us players with Will being the coach," Ellis said.

The Jam is affiliated with the NBA's Golden State Warriors and L.A. Clippers and can be assigned players by both teams.

"He comes from a little different mold, but we've got a bit of a different mold ourselves," Ellis said.

Bob, thanks so much for maintaining this thread, especially the mp3 links.

Bill Simmons, Ric Bucher and Marc Stein. Warriors mentioned just after 33 minutes in. Great quote along the lines of "they could have seven different players score 35 points in a single game."
"It gets harder [to handle losses] actually. I don't remember how I handled it when I was young, but I'm sure better. I can't drink as much scotch now. When I was younger, I could drink more." --Nellie

Warriors Set To Tip-Off 2009-10 Regular Season At ORACLE Arena On Wed, Oct 28th
Golden State is slated to make eight (8) national television appearances this season, with six (6) games scheduled on ESPN and two (2) appearances on TNT. The Warriors’ initial nationally televised game will be ESPN’s coverage of Golden State’s home contest against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday, December 16, at ORACLE Arena. ESPN will also feature Golden State’s home games versus the Washington Wizards on Friday, December 18; the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday, February 21; the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday, March 15; and the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday, March 17; as well as the team’s road game against the Utah Jazz on Wednesday, March 31. TNT’s exclusive Thursday night telecasts will also feature Golden State’s home games versus the Denver Nuggets on February 25 and the Portland Trail Blazers on March 11.

Tip-off time for the majority of Golden State’s home games during the 2009-10 season will be 7:30 p.m., with the exception of two Sunday contests and a special Monday matinee in January. The Sunday home game on February 21 against Atlanta begins at 5:00 p.m. to accommodate ESPN and the Sunday home game on April 11 versus Oklahoma City begins at 6:00 p.m., while the game versus the Chicago Bulls on Monday, January 18, starts at 1:00 p.m. as part of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday celebration.

After playing 21 of their first 34 games of the season on the road, the Warriors begin a stretch in which they’ll play 18 of 24 contests at ORACLE Arena by hosting their Northern California rival Sacramento Kings on Friday, January 8.

For 2009-10, the Warriors will play only three games against the following Western Conference opponents: Houston Rockets (two at home, one away), Utah Jazz (two at home, one away), San Antonio Spurs (one at home, two away), and Minnesota Timberwolves (one at home, two away).

Golden State’s road schedule consists of three (3) five-game road trips, two (2) four-game road trips, one (1) three-game trip, five (5) two-game trips and five (5) one-game out-and-back trips. Additionally, the Warriors will play 20 sets of back-to-back games this season, with 11 of the back-to-back sets falling on the road, five (5) starting at home and ending on the road, and another four

RealGM: C.J. Watson Still Waiting For Offer
As a restricted free agent, C.J. Watson's patience has been tested this offseason.

"Everything is up in the air right now," Watson's agent, Derrick Powell, told RealGM's Alex Kennedy on Tuesday.

"We're just waiting now and things are taking longer than usual for restricted free agents. Everyone is waiting for the unrestricted free agents to sign but the teams pursuing unrestricted players aren't doing anything either."

Watson, who rejected a one year, $2.3 million offer sheet from Philadelphia earlier this summer, is looking for a multi-year deal and an increase in playing time.

Philadelphia, New York, Orlando and three other unnamed teams have been in talks with Watson's camp, according to Powell.

While Orlando can't offer anything more than a minimum contract, sign-and-trade talks are ongoing.

"Otis [Smith] has been in constant contact with Golden State and it's definitely still a possibility," says Powell.

Bruce Jenkins: What's in store for NBA West
7. Here's where it gets interesting. The Warriors can earn this slot, or No. 8, if coach Don Nelson really believes in his team. Naturally, there are other factors - lack of a true distributor, not enough rebounding, no backcourt defense against the league's best guards - but more than anything, Nelson needs a change of mind-set.

Granted, that's a lot to ask of a 69-year-old man so set in his ways, but he can't be grumbling in December about the team having no shot at the postseason. He needs to see in Anthony Randolph what everyone else saw this summer: a potentially great forward who demands 40 minutes a game. He needs to abandon his bury-the-rookies mentality and keep Stephen Curry on the floor with Monta Ellis for long stretches at a time. Brandan Wright will be the key forward off the bench; make him feel as if he matters.

What's to lose? Why not have fun, instead of keeping half the roster in fear of reprisal? Analyzing a starting lineup of Curry, Ellis, Randolph, Stephen Jackson and Andris Biedrins, people around the league are forecasting a return to the Warriors' fun-loving, dangerous-as-hell ways. The players are more than ready to make it happen.

Cool, we've managed to piece together the schedule before it was announced.

Oct. 4 vs LAC / Oracle Arena
Oct. 7 at LAL / Honda Center in Anaheim
Oct. 9 at LAL / The Forum in Inglewood
Oct. 10 at PHX / Indian Wells, Calif.
Oct. 12 at LAC / Staples Center
Oct. 20 at LAL / Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, CA

There's probably only one more game we're missing, likely at Oracle.

That looks like a Keith Smart coached statline. A lot of summer league HOF'ers are going to play for that man.
