Accardo sent down, newly acquired Roenicke called up

Post#1 » by Avenger » Fri Jul 31, 2009 11:13 pm

as per bastian twitter

scouting report on Josh Roenicke posted by Meta4 in another thread.
"At spring training last year, Roenicke made a big impression by coming into manager Dusty Baker's office and introducing himself. He also impressed on the mound, where Roenicke quikcly showed he had the organization's best arm. His fastball is a plus-plus pitch with natural life, sitting at 94-95 mph and touching 99. He has the natural athleticism expected from a former college quarterback/wide receiver. He walked on to UCLAs baseball team after coming to school on a football scholarship. Besides his fastball, Roenicke also throws an 88-89 mph cutter and an inconsistent slider. He also has an adequate changeup, but he rarely uses it as a short reliever. When he's on, Roenicke can strike out the side, as he did in his final big league outing of the season, but he can get too enamoured with velocity and focus on firing fastballs rather than setting up hitters. He'll come to spring training with a chance to earn a job in the Cincinnati bullpen and has the stuff to eventually pitch at the back end of it. The son of former outfielder Gary Roenicke and the nephew of Ron Roenicke, Josh became the family's third big leaguer when he earned a September callup. He also has two brothers, Jarrett and Jason, who are minor leaguers."

Good, we already know what we have with Accardo. A decent reliever. Let's see the flame thrower.

A decent reliever who saved 30 games and has an ERA under 3 this year. Honestly I don't understand what Accardo has done to deserve the treatment he's getting.

He's better then Carlsson. Sure Carlsson is a leftie but its not like he's shutting down left handed hitters. Accardo's done better then League also. I don't get how they're treating Accardo either, and they wonder why he complains about being in the minors.

Accardo has options; the rest don't. That's really the only logic I can find, because he has gotten a rough ride this season.

Downs is hurt again, so Accardo will probably be called up tomorrow.

League's peripherals are actually much better than Accardo's. He's taken a huge step up this season as a reliever.

League has stepped it up with his last 7-8 appearences being scoreless. Accardo is still better then Carlsson. If Rogers won't add to team payroll, Jays need to really look at moving Downs/Frasor and hope a few of League/Accardo/Stewart/Roenicke/McGowan/Janssen can make an impact in the bullpen next year. Use the money saved to sign a free agent hitter.

The money saved will be pocketed. At least that's my prediction. We're stuck between contending and rebuilding. I really don't see the Jays spending big this summer.

Rogers isn`t going to unload a lot of money for us to spend on FAs. We`re spending like half of what Boston is, we can`t possibly expect to get anywhere in this division unless we have the payroll to do it and that`s not happening, especially given that we`re seeing cost-cutting moves already.

Roenicke does look like a really interesting potential guy, though, especially since he`s got top-notich velocity and purportedly better control than Brandon League usually shows.

I too am confused as to the way Accardo has been treated, I mean he`s performed well for us and he`s being treated like he`s nothing in favor of much worse relievers.

I wasn't suggesting Rogers add payroll for a bat. Just move the money being spent around (from the bullpen to a fa hitter). Downs,Frasor will be about 6-7 mill combined next year. Trade them both for prospects and then use the money for a hitter. They might just do something like this and pocket the savings though, who knows.

Salary for the team is already gonna be high next year. (Wells is going up to 21 mill) To bring back the same team that cost us 82 mill or so this year, will cost 96 mill or so next year. Thats a lot for Rogers to be spending considering how attendance dropped by about 7.000 a game this year.

Yeah, this is kind of what I was saying in another thread, only I was talking about moving Wells for a bucket of fish and some salary relief. But yeah, if Roenicke and Stewart pan out and we feel like treating Accardo like a decent pitcher, there isn't much reason to keep expensive pitchers like Downs and Frasor over those guys and we could really use the money elsewhere, for sure.
