Two Years Since the KG Trade

Post#1 » by shrink » Sun Aug 2, 2009 2:30 pm

On 7/31/07, MIN made the biggest trade in it's history:

Kevin Garnett for Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff ($11.67 mil expiring), Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, 2009 protected first round pick (top 3 in 2009, top 2 in 2010, top 2 in 2011, unprotected in 2012) (#6-Jonny Flynn), conditional first round pick (2009 #28-Wayne Ellington), cash

(Personally, I wouldn't call that MIN pick returned Jonny Flynn, but .. )

In the last two seasons, Garnett has played 71 and 52 games respectively (not to mention missing last seasons playoffs). Not really much to say, if we didn't trade for Jefferson than we wouldn't have such a good start rebuilding. I think KG became a **** when he started playing in Boston.

It is starting to look better and better for the Wolves as time goes on. Between the re-boot which allows a possibility of actually becoming a contender in the future, it looks like we sold on Garnett right before all the mileage on his body started limiting his effectiveness and playing time. (I am not happy that Garnett's body is wearing out, I am just taking the practical view.)

OJ Mayo is one of the best defenders in the league, hes a two way player and hes a great passer and playmaker.

Ya KG is almost a totally different person now that he's a Celtic, not to mention more popular, which is a dam shame

but the Celtics gave us a younger, less paid, future superstar and i thank them for it

At the time I didn't agree but now, I agree with my brother when he said that he would have traded KG for Al Jefferson straight up. I think that was one of the best trades we could have gotten for KG. It worked out well for both parties. KG had to go, we screwed up too much at that point and there was very little chance that we were going to turn things around in the near future. Maybe if we got a David Kahn back in 2000 or so things would have been different.

The returned pick was not Jonny Flynn:

Boston receives Minnesota's 2009 first-round pick. (Wally Szczerbiak trade 012606). Top 3 protected. Trade will not go through until after (Minn) first round pick has been conveyed to LA Clippers. *Must be 2 years following this trade commencing due to NBA's no succesive year first-round pick trade rule. (traded back in KG trade)

Though I was 21 at the time, it was the day my childhood ended.

Man... that was a tough day for me... tough month. Sort of like your first girlfriend leaving you.

The wolves were in a bad position at the time, something had to give. I don't know if getting rid of KG was the right move, but it has made the last two years terrible to watch.

It was the day I basically stopped with posting on the RealGM boards..
