I doubt this is true. 2,5 mio per year is low for Big Baby and he can definitely get a little more from other teams. If we give him 4 year 12 mio with 4th year as TO that would be a good deal for both parties,IMO...

If Hoopsworld is correct which we all have doubts, Ainge is telling Big Baby 4 years $10 MM. Ainge is saying go out and find a deal better than what the Celtics are offering. So far Big Baby can't find a team to give him more than 4 years $10MM.

Why would the Celtics offer more? They wouldn't.

It's not clear BBD can't find a team to give him more. the trouble is teams are scared that the C's would just match. it's RFA hell for BBD. either another team grossly overpays, or else they won't get him.

so the question in the coming weeks is: will some team finally get so desperate as to overpay? or will nobody step up? or will BBD just refuse to sign the deal and take the QO for 1 year and become a UFA, when he isn't in this weird position?

by negotiating a reasonable deal, we avoid the first and last possibilities. it all depends on what we think his value is.

You do something like 3 years for $10 million with a player option for the 4th and it's done. Honestly at that price, he does come relatively cheap. He'll be making around the same type of money as Scal does and yet he's way more productive and younger.

It's pretty clear otherwise he would sign an offer sheet. Big Baby is in a tough spot. If I was giving him advice I would tell him to take the Celtics deal. Taking the QO would be real risky IMO because I think next year the market is going to be even worse with the Salary Cap going down signifcantly and a lockout looming.

you are not bidding against yourselves. you are still bidding with Big baby. Technically he could reject that offer and say f*ck it....i'll play for my current $hitty contract and at the end of year go elsewhere. Then we lose him for nothing. So when he does reject it, because it's the right thing for him to do, so come back at 3 years for $10 with a player option and let him know that he's not gonna get anything better out there. No one is gonna offer him 5.9 million a year, he even knows that. So getting at least half of that in a $hitty market is not a bad deal for him.

Well, I thought the Davis would take the qualifying offer from the start. However, this past Sunday, it was said that he would still be restricted next year. Not sure if this is true? I have never heard this? Anyone who can clear this up would make things much easier. He won't get more as a RFA next year.

I dont understand why ppl are throwing emotion into this BBD signing process, its business business business.

If a car salesman had a 2008 Honda Accord on sale in his lot for $15,000, ($5k less than market value) would you pay the full $20k anyway? Would you say hmm this a good man he needs the money, I liked the last car I bought from him so what the heck?

If BBD gets a little less than what his skills dictate then its the market's fault and certainly not the Celtics.

buying the car is the wrong analogy. leasing the car is better. would you take a lease where the 1st year is cheap, but then the next year onwards it might go up a whole lot? or would you take a least where you lock in the rate for 3-4 years at what you think is a good price?

Because the negotiation doesn't work that way. Davis isn't simply looking for more than 4 years 10 mil at least not in the beginning of August, he wants as much as he can. Once he signs an offer sheet that is his contract. Basically you can't jump to the conclusion that because Davis doesn't have an offer sheet to top Boston's offer in hand doesn't mean he can't get one. He can probably get say 3 a year but he wants 4 or 5 so he has to keep working it. At the same time Boston doesn't really have a motivation to increase their offer until he is facing the deadline for a new contract in Oct or he is ready to sign on the dotted line.

If Davis accepts the qualifying offer he will be an unrestricted FA, the author in the WEEI article was mistaken. The only way Baby would again be a restricted FA is if he refused to accept the QO and held out.

Basically it is subtle, but restricted FA only exists after a rookie contract, accepting a qualifying offer would constitute a second contract. I am trying to find a case of it but I can't.

He can't because other teams are fully aware that anything at a reasonable price....the celtics would just match. So why make an offer and have your cash just sit out there in limbo for 7 to 10 days when you know the Celtics are gonna match the offer. I'm sure there are plenty of teams that offer him at least half of the mid level exception but won't because it's not a definite signing deal. He is worth half the mid level, not the full, that's why the Celtics have all the leverage in this negotiation. They can just sit and wait....then throw a $hitty offer and see if he bites. If he does....the Celtics made out. If he doesn't, they can still sit back and wait.

Hoping for a miracle is the reason why he is waiting. Probably not going to happen. Just like Marbury is hoping for something more than the vet min. Probably not going to happen either.

Big Baby is waiting because that is the position RFA's are in. Once teams start making their decisions the players will know what they can get. There is no incentive of Celtics to overpay and no real good reason for Big Baby to accept a low offer.

My personal opinion is that BBD signing qualifying offer is best thing for the team. He is no long term solution to any teams needs so why lock him when we need flexibility after next season? He is a complimentary player and limiting our ability to make moves after this season when there are so many high profile free agents makes no sense. I am sure that most other teams out there feel the same way.
