If Hoopsworld is correct which we all have doubts, Ainge is telling Big Baby 4 years $10 MM. Ainge is saying go out and find a deal better than what the Celtics are offering. So far Big baby can't find a team to give him more than 4 years $10MM.
Why would the Celtics offer more? They wouldn't.
It's not clear BBD can't find a team to give him more. the trouble is teams are scared that the C's would just match. it's RFA hell for BBD. either another team grossly overpays, or else they won't get him.
so the question in the coming weeks is: will some team finally get so desperate as to overpay? or will nobody step up? or will BBD just refuse to sign the deal and take the QO for 1 year and become a UFA, when he isn't in this weird position?
by negotiating a reasonable deal, we avoid the first and last possibilities. it all depends on what we think his value is.
i agree about the doubts on the source. but it doesn't seem like a crazy offer from the C's.
