McBob Bulking Up
I just read his blog on pacers.com, and he said that he has really been working hard in the weight room, and is up to about 250 pounds compared to 230 last year! He also said he feels faster even with adding on the weight because it was mostly all muscle. This is great news! What do you guys think about it?

Re: McBob Bulking Up
I just want to call it right now, that McBob is going to surprise pretty much everybody on earth. Keep in mind, he was highly touted in high school, struggled at Duke, and has been an end-of-the-bench guy since. This year he's bullked up, which matters a lot for big-men-who-struggle-in-their-early-seasons.
Now, I'm not saying the production will be equal or anything, but doesn't that remind you a little bit of Jermaine O'Neal? Touted in high school, buried on the bench for like four years, finally bulked up, and surprised everyone and turned into a perennial all-star. Now McBob is certainly not going to be an All-Star, but I do think he's going to surprise everyone. A lot.
Here's my prediction. The last half of the season, once he's trusted enough, he will average 15 minutes a game, and average 8 pts, 5 boards, and 1.5 steals and 1.5 assists per game. That would be impressive, no?
Fact is, he's finally putting on his big man muscle. This will make a huge difference, and he will surprise everyone.

Cut that prediction in half, and I'd probably agree.
He's going to be the best end of the bench big man in the league.
Look out Mark Madsen, the new MAD DOG is in town!!!!

McBob will be lucky to get 600-700 minutes this year. He'll be buried behind Hibbert, Foster, Murphy, and Hansbrough...and Solomon Jones will probably get minutes because he can play Center.
I have no idea what you're talking about, and clearly, neither do you.

He's gonna average 1.5 steals per game, only playing 15 minutes per??
Sure...

Re: McBob Bulking Up
I am fearful the added bulk will hinder his "outta control finesse" style of play. Several of his points and rebounds seemed to come on high flying acrobatic put backs when he flew into the lane over the top of everyone else. For some reason I get the feeling he will not be able to jump as well, he will not be able to finesse around the defender, or the added bulk will knock the defender over, etc.
I hope I am wrong ad the size helps him, I am just fearful it goes against the strength of his game.

This is from awhile back. I think a lot of NBA and NFL players bulk up early in the off-season and then trim back down to their playing weight as the season approaches. I doubt that McBob keeps all of his added bulk, but I don't think it would be a bad thing if he does. If he can be strong enough to play center a bit, it adds to his versatility and his value in the league.

I think McBob could become a quality player he was only in college one year right, thing is he needs to get playing time, we'll never know what we have in this guy unless he gets some more time on court. Like JO he did come to us from the Blazers, like JO he needs to get out there and play. Clearly the guy has a lot of talent, but with Murphy and Hansborough in front of him he's gonna have a hard time getting on the court min! If he shows a good attitude and plays well in practice maybe something can open up!

Re: McBob Bulking Up
The best thing about Bobs adding the weight is what he said when asked about it, and that is that he thinks it actually made him quicker because it was all muscle. To drudge up another topic here on the board, it wasn't until Bender added that 20lbs. of muscle that we actually started seeing promise out of him, and that was because he added the weight the right way. He wasn't just eating crap and gaining weight, he was adding muscle and it was very obvious in looking at his build. When we see Bobs in Beijing, or wherever the hell they're playing, and his upper body is looking like he's been in the gym (as opposed to the kitchen) then I think we'll have something to get slightly excited about.
He did play pretty reckless at times last year and potentially added quickness without discipline could lead to a problem instead of a solution. Him adding bulk will mean nothing if he hasn't harnessed that energy that he had last year. I have very high, but realistic, hopes for 'bobby" this season. With that said, I'll be the first to say that he isn't exactly something to be overly excited about this season.
If he can put up 6 points, 3-4 rebounds, and 15 quality minutes per game off the bench, then I will say that he has lived up to my expectations.

Re: McBob Bulking Up
It sounds like Josh is doing what he needs to do to compete for an opportunity. There will be minutes for a fourth big and McRoberts will be competing with Hansbrough and S. Jones for those minutes. Certainly a lottery pick is going to get the benefit of the doubt if no one player really seperates himself from the others.
I thought McRoberts had some good moments last year and I don't think it is completely out of the question for him to beat out Hansbrough for those minutes.
Just how much of an opportunity exists will be dictated by others. Can Hibbert stay on the floor long enough to claim significant minutes at center and essentially split minutes with Foster? Will Rush play at a high level? If he does and Dunleavy gets back early I expect the Pacers to play alot of small ball. That will reduce the minutes for the 4th big.

Not that its much of a difference but McRoberts was actually at Duke for two seasons.

Re: McBob Bulking Up
This is reminiscent of Kobe gaining 15 pounds of muscle for the 05 season....
hmm...superstar perhaps?
Ok not really.
This is good for McRoberts, although from watching him play what he really needs to learn is to settle down a bit. He runs around and jumps everywhere with no regard for anything. It's quite funny, actually.
