Rookie Salary Cap

Post#1 » by TTown » Thu Aug 6, 2009 7:15 pm

I don't know if I posed the thread title correctly. I'm just wondering, since it's come up recently (including a Wiretap article up top saying Michael Crabtree is prepared to reenter the 2010 Draft) -- why doesn't the NFL have a rookie pay scale, like the NBA? Is it at all logical, or would the NFLPA never let it get off the ground?

It'd just be nice to have all the rookies in camp on day one, without having to hear about a dozen hold-outs every year.

This is a reform that's surely coming. We may not end up with a "hard" rookie pay scale, but I think we'll end up with one that vastly shrinks the available negotiating terrain, and thus, thankfully, reduces the number of top draft picks who end up arriving at camp so late. The NFL has done a pretty good job of looking after the collective good of the league. This is one area that almost every expert I've heard thinks needs to be addressed and resolved for the good of the league.
