Thornton/Heatley

Post#1 » by Griff83 » Mon Aug 3, 2009 9:10 pm

What a combination this would be. One of the best passers in the game with one of the best pure snipers.

Sounds like theres a good chance this could happen. a three way deal with San Jose, Ottawa and Montreal.

Talk about epic failure come playoff time.

I wasn't gonna say it, but I was saying it.

Sharks choking in the playoffs is almost unavoidable.

At least these two will put on a show in the regular season.

It's not going to happen... From all the report, the Habs get screwed as the 3rd man, so unless Gainey has completely lost it (Not completely unthinkable) then I don't expect us to have anything to do with this deal.

Well they'd dominate the regular season...

Together those two would destroy everyone, they'd be an amazing combo of size and skill.

Two bone-headed forwards on the decline who play no defense and have yet to show any signs of leadership? They'll fit in perfectly with each other and combine for 220 points in the regular season, but get bounced in the playoffs by a lower seed.

I'll pass.

Haha Declining?

Heatley is 28 years old while Thornton is 30.

A players prime is between the ages of around 27-32.

What would even make you think that either of these two are on the way down and declining?

^ Because both of their points totals have dropped off each of the last 3 seasons.

Just because a certain players point totals come down it doesnt mean they are declining. There are plenty of factors that can play into something like this (quality of team, how well teammates play around them, system coach implements offence vs defence, quality of other teams in division, a defence that can get forwards the puck). Players simply dont decline at the age of 28 unless they have a bad injury that greatly influences there level of play.

Take Heatley for example.

He had back to back 100pt seasons while playing on one of the best teams in the East. Those teams scored alot, had a inprime Daniel Alfredsson and had defencemen that could get the forwards the puck. Now hes playing on one of the weaker teams in the eastern conference, Alfreddson is not as good, they got rid of Redden and Corvo who were the teams two best puck movers from the blueline and now have a blueline almost incapable of moving the puck from the defensive zone. The past two coaches have attempted to create more of a defensive system and that doesnt really help players like Heatley, Spezza and Alfreddson. That team has also had major distractions the past 2 seasons and there really hasnt been much commitment from the top players.

There no longer is as many 100pt scorers as there was in years like 05-06 or 06-07. Heatley and Thornton are around 85-95 point scorers going forward. Just because they arent going to put up as many points as they did in pervious seasons, this doesnt mean they are declining. Players decline when they are like 33/34/35/36.

Yeah, but with both of these players, you need leadership. If the deal involves sending away Patty Marleau. . . dont want to see this team. They will score a bunch, but be an even easier matchup come playoff time.

Watching them in the playoffs, Marleau shows up every game. Cant be said about either of these two. I like Heater a lot and hope he does well, but this is a bad combination for 82 games and the playoffs. Could be good in the Olympics though

Anyways, we stole Heatley for the most overpaid player on the Sharks and a guy that's better suited for Olympic speed skating than hockey. But Marleau shows up for the playoffs more than Thornton? Oh my...

Now that they're actually going to be paired up; is it possible to be knocked out of the first round in 3 games?

The Sharks didn't pay a minimal price, but it's worth it for that calibre of player. This is going to be one heck of an exciting season in San Jose, but how often have we said that recently just to see them fail come playoff time?
