He's available, but we're not going to give him away for a one year rental or some scrub. If we're going to trade him its going to be for a rotation player, preferably for one on the right side of 30.

I was looking for a team that had lux issues this year, but looked OK in 2010, but wasn't going to have free agency ambitions. Also, a team that had play-off ambitions. That looked like the Spurs. Do you think your management would be interested in:

Finley + Bonner + Mason for Atkins + Songalia + $1.53 mil TPE

$2,500,000 Finley
$3,256,500 Bonner
$3,780,000 Mason
---------------
$9,536,500

$3,480,000/$760,000 Atkins
$4,526,000 $4,818,000 Songalia
---------------
$8,006,000

For the Spurs, Atkins contract is only gauranteed for $0.76 so if he's waived he saves a team $2.72 mil. The TPE is $1.53 mil, so that's 2009 savings of $4.25 mil. Since the Spurs are over the lux, that's doubled, so they save $8.5 mil this year. Next season you pay Songalia $4.8, so the savings is $3.7 mil. Your team also gets two years of production from Songalia, and two roster spots you could use to add veteran free agent at the min, or upgrade with the TPE.

I assume you think Mason is OK, but with his price and the others doubled over the lux, this seems like a cost-effective way to move some of those contracts. We could agree to release Finley and Bonner if you'd like them to return.

the spurs management have said, more or less, that they are willing to spend like drunken sailors over the next 1-2 years. i doubt they look to trim the books at the expense of talent right now. maybe at the deadline they try and move some dead weight, but at this point, we dont even know who that might be.

Keep the talent, MIN could waive them all. I'm just trying to use your lux penalties to pay for your other talent, either reclaiming those guys or with the open roster slots.

Chucky Atkins waive and sending you a $1.5 mil TPE this year benefits you a lot more than us.

I think that's a legit concern. I would suggest though that Finley and Bonner are both overpaid, and worse, the whole value is doubled because of the lux. If I'm paying rotation players double, I'd at least like the opportunity to give contracts to players that are not overpaid.

Let me take a look and run numbers.

Do nothing:

$2,500,000 Finley
$3,256,500 Bonner
$3,780,000 Mason
---------------
$9,536,500

Pay $19 mil in 2009 for these players, zero for no players in 2010.

Trade:

$4,526,000 $4,818,000 Songalia
$1,262,276 vet min free agent
$1,262,276 vet min free agent
---------------------------------------------
$7,084,552

This deal is still financially even with doing nothing -- it just reclaims money from the lux. The $2.5 mil difference doubled this season pays for Songalia for free next year, and Songalia > Bonner.

So who they can attract for the vet min? Marbury? Sure. Iverson? Get their own players back?

Well, that's 3 players who the Spurs view as part of their key rotation guys. I don't think the Spurs give that up for a guy we think is a 3rd string PG here or at best a 12 minute backup PG.

Never liked Bonner, Finley, or Mason Jr playing 30 minutes a game. But if things go right, they should only be playing 15 minutes a night. And they're solid players for that many minutes.

I am sure the FO will look at a lot of possibilities and not make any relevent mid-season moves....like always.

I just proposed this idea on the trade board. What do you guys think?

Clippers Get: Dalembert/W. Green/Holiday/Hill
Clippers Give: Baron/Camby

The Clippers get 2 of my favorite young PG prospects and get rid of Baron's contract. Dalembert's shot blocking could help too.

Sixers Get: Baron/Mason/Bonner
Sixers Give: Dalembert/W. Green/Holiday

The Sixers try to contend with the Magic, Cavs, and Celtics in the East. They take on Baron's contract, but he has worked hard this offseason, and he could be a comeback POY candidate on PHI. Mason and Bonner are both very productive 3pt sharp shooters on expiring contracts. Plus they get rid of Dalembert's and Green's contracts.

Spurs Get: Camby
Spurs Give: Mason/Bonner/Hill

Many Spurs fans have said Camby is the missing link for them to win the championship. They would have a hole at the backup PG, but they could sign a veteran PG, such as Brevin Knight, Jason Hart, Bobby Jackson, or Tyronne Lue.

I would do it but it really depends on who we could get to fill the spot left by those guys.

I think Camby is the ideal frontcourt partner for Duncan. He gives us superb rebounding and shotblocking, defense, ability to hit the midrange shot. Camby is a starter on this team and while he probably has 2 year left on his career, it's worth it if it gives us a better chance at the title.

George Hill, as good as he is in the summer league, is still a 15 minute backup to Tony Parker. Unless we're trading Tony, that's all George Hill will ever be on this team. He's expendable.

Bonner, if we get Camby, will not have any minutes in the rotation. TD, Dice, Camby, Blair will be the starter and backup. He's expendable.

Mason showed to be strictly a 3 point shooter last year. With Jefferson and Manu starting, I think Finley already gives us that jumpshooter from the bench. Don't think we need 2 of them at the SG position. He's expendable if we can get someone else.

Problem is, that's 3 guys on the key rotation that is traded for 1 guy. This late into the summer, I don't think the Spurs do it.

The Spurs should do it either in last July when FA just opened. Or do it in December-January perhaps after they see how well Mason/Bonner/Hill fit into their roles.

Now is not the right time to it. We don't really have good options left on FA to fill out those positions.
