Grizzlies acquire Steven Hunter, 2010 1st round pick

Post#1 » by I Am Awesome-O » Fri Aug 7, 2009 10:54 pm

The Memphis Grizzlies received a protected 2010 first round draft pick, along with center Steven Hunter and cash considerations from the Denver Nuggets in exchange for a future conditional second round draft pick, Grizzlies General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace announced today.

Finally, a deal that Heisley makes that actually helps Memphis while helping another team. I applaud Heisley on this one. Memphis now has three 1st round picks in next year's loaded draft. It's going to be crazy.

This could also mean that Memphis's roster is now set with 13 players, unless of course Hunter is bought out, which is very possible.

Overall, it was a very good move by the Grizz.

This a pretty decent move. Our 3 picks may not amount to much ( maybe 9, 24, and 30). But at the same time is does give u options not only in the off season, but from now thru the deadline. But my hope is that we don't just buy him out, but attempt to utilize Hunter, Jaric, and one of those picks for a vet. My DREAM is that we could stop this 3 yr. Plan stuff and go for it now! We need 3 things to sell tickets, be contenders, and also grow as a team. Those things are simple: a superstar, a former Grizzly, and a former tiger. Those names can and should be: Allen Iverson, Shane Battier, and Joey Dorsey. That's my dream, which needs to be a reality ( Whewww, i 've been holding that in for a while), but any way. See if we could use him and our cap room to get a shooter/backup 2/3 before we just buy him out.

Iverson=No
Battier=No
Dorsey= High Energy, Bruiser Yes

Got to applaud the move, It will allow Gasol to have an immediate backup, and allow our other 2 big men to develop.

Even if he is bought ought, I would assume DEN sent over a Million or 2, so its $2 million or so and a future #2 for a #1 next year.

It's a good move for sure. With the 2010 draft expect to be good next year. The Grizz have some options to play with. As for Steven Hunter, he's good for six fouls and nothing more unless the Grizz expect to waive him outright. If he stays on the roster I guess it's D-Leagues or waivers for Hamad Hadaddi.

Would you guys take Kleiza for Gasol? I think you need a backup SF?

Hunter is on the cusp of retirement with a dodgy knee. As things stand, he probably won't play for the Grizzlies, unless he gets some good news about his health. That said, he doesn't need to play a single game to make it a solid move.

Absolutely not. Kleiza is an inferior player that would have a larger contract than Gasol if he came here. Gasol is our starting C. Why the hell would we trade him for a backup SF. If we want Kleiza, we can try to sign him outright, but we definately aren't giving up a young, solid starting C for a backup SF. It's not like Steven Hunter is going to change that; he'll probably be bought out anyway.

After a draft of Sam Young and DeMarre Carroll, nope.

That's besides the point. They do emphasize the draft even if they don't make the most of it. Having 3 first round picks next season should prove that. They traded Javartis Crittendon to Washington last year to get their own first round pick back from an earlier deal.

Young and cheap is their mantra. Zach Randolph was an anomoly. They wouldn't take on a free agent for five years but would pay a premium for one at two years for flexibility. Plus Randolph has better proven stats than any free agent on the market.

But with Randolph he dovetails into a huge expiring contract right around the time guys like Gay will get a big deal, plus Conley, then Mayo behind him.

Honestly, we should have been doing this all along - if we're going to help another team salary-wise, then we need to get more in return than the difference between 3mill and the contract we're buying out for them (i.e. a pick).

Steven Hunter will officially join the list of former Grizz who actually never played one minute for the Grizz.

Steve Francis (twice)
Mike Wilks
Jerry Stackhouse
Chris Mihm
Quentin Richardson

Foyle falls in to the Will Conroy, Anthony Roberson Jeremy Richardson, Kwame Brown category of ghost players that never got their chance.
