ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The largest crowd ever to watch a Denver Broncos practice didn't much like what it saw.

New quarterback Kyle Orton, acquired from Chicago for Pro Bowl passer Jay Cutler in the biggest NFL trade of the offseason, was booed by the crowd of 13,402 at his unofficial debut at Invesco Field when he threw two interceptions and several bad passes during a structured scrimmage Thursday night.

Orton drew the fans' ire when he was picked off twice by cornerback Andre' Goodman, the second of which was returned for a long touchdown.

"I had a good day," Goodman said in a lonely sentiment afterward.

Orton also was jeered when he threw behind receiver Chad Jackson, again when he missed a wide-open Jabar Gaffney in the end zone and also when he floated a pass down the middle that Champ Bailey busted up.

"Fans can cheer. They can boo," Orton said. "We've got good fans, and they're passionate about their football, that's for sure."

I don't wish bad things for Kyle so I hope he turns it around. Fans there have to realize they've got a game-manager type in KO. He's not Cutler....which is why it cost us 2 1st rounder PLUS Orton to get him.

If you asked a lot of die-hard Broncos fans, they'd probably tell you that they're still better off with Orton and 2 first round picks because Cutler isn't that much better than Orton. :giggle:

You are right on point Chewie.... Kyle is a game-manager -not a game-changer .....unless you expect him to be game-changer and he decides to change by attempting to do something he is not capable of doing, and by doing so, he manages to help the team lose by trying to change.

That was a mouth full... but in essence Denver needs incorporate a more conservative slow-paced offense to maximize the most out of KO.

Denver is accustomed to a speed based offense, but they will need to make some adjustments now.

The Broncos are going to be awful this season without an offense AND defense. And Moreno got hurt during the game today.

Orton with the picks probably sent Broncos fans into cardiac arrest but they were moving the ball well. If the only thing in the first preseason game to worry about was Ortons picks then they will be okay throwing the ball because we know he doesnt throw a bunch of picks normally. Moreno looked quick as hell in the few plays I saw . He will be okay by the time the regular season starts I think .

even though i'm much happier with cutler on our team, i still really liked orton. i hope he does well with denver. i thought he was a stand-up guy. he got a lot of W's. the drive with 1 minute left against atlanta was awesome. never mind the ensuing squib kick and 35-yard completion that cost us the game with 30 seconds left.

i hope the fans give him a chance there.

That yard per completion average is very Shane Matthew-ish but they're breathing a little easier in Denver, I imagine.

As we are painfully aware, Orton isn't a downfield QB.
I know we tend to say the Bears dumbed down offenses for Orton and perhaps Grossman. Then again, this probably gives Bears offensive coordinators (see Ron Turner), and roster, too much credit. In a few ways, the Broncos will be happy with more of a system QB like Orton with the new coaching staff. Which was a part of what made them feel free to explore a dump of Cutler for Matt Cassel. And if the Broncos can devise a west coast type offense that scores points, that fits Orton better, doh!
But they do have receivers and an O-line up in Colorado at least for the guy to work with. Which helps. Not that I put much faith at all in what happens against preseason defenses, but dollars to donuts I imagine they ought to get more out of Orton than any Chicago staff could get. Also, Cutler will be complaining either sideways in public, or directly in private about Ron Turner and his wide receivers at some point is my guess.

You've got to be able to do both though and Cutler HAD to be a gun slinger last year given Denver's lack of a running game and the fact they were usually trying to play catch up. If defenses have to respect your ability to pass, it'll keep them from stacking the box so much. Note to self: draft Forte in my fantasy league.

but then I noticed it was 4th down and they were ahead why didnt they just kick it lol
