What happens to waived players with undesirable production and a long/large contract, but in the midst of that long contract, they have a good season or two. What happens to them if no one picks them up, do they clear waivers and go to the best bidder, or just assumed to not be in the game until someone picks up their contract, or when their contract expires?

IMO they should clear waivers after a season and become a UFA

I think the player's should keep their current contract (Size and Lenght) until the following off-season and then they are up for F/A bids. It really wouldn't be fair for a team to pick up all the player's cut with the Amnesty clause (there has been some good ones) for much smaller contracts.

Exactly... IMO it should take one full season and then they would be a UFA. Teams that have been cut with the clause are in the contraction draft, but their contracts still apply.

Spreewell's a great example of a player who will be very interesting in this sim. His best case is excellent but his worst case (close to how his career actually played out) is troubling. Can a GM create the conditions for Spree to thrive, or will be a fairly inefficient volume scorer with an average PER?

I LOVE the pick for this game and am looking forward to seeing how he fares.

See this is where I get fuzzy on this game. Are we going to assert that, through foresight and proper management we can cure what ails a player in ANY way? (Mainly i'm looking at injuries). If that's the case, Hill has surgery and takes an entire year off instead of trying to come back. Does he now get evaluated at some portion of his previous prime for five or six more healthy seasons?

^Good question.

Also, can the guy running the Warriors simply fire PJ Carlisemo and assume that Latrell won't go loopy and choke his replacement, resulting in the long suspension and subsequent trade for nothing?

If a player's out for a whole year in real life, he's out for a whole year in this sim. If he retires in real life, he retires in this sim.

Injuries are a big part of the NBA and a big part of this game. GMs must make challenging decisions when evaluating players due to injuries.

Perhaps a GM could give a player a lesser role in a season where a player missed 20 games due to minor lingering injuries. This may save that player some stress on his body.

IMO role adjustments will be important because we can see how different situations affected different players, but players who are injury prone will still be injury prone.

That didn't really answer my question. Take the Grant Hill case specifically since he's the guy probably most useful (and crippled) in this game. Is there a way to assert that a reduced role in the previous seasons due to a better supporting case prevents the injury entirely? Or a more cautious medical staff than Orlando's keeps him out the year and he returns healthy to play out his contract?

I don't know if we want to get into historical coaches and coaching changes, but Kendall Gill won't be George Karl's whipping boy in this sim. The Gill situation is very minor compared to a Spreewell or Artest situation just as Shaq missing 20 games in 98 is minor compared to Grant Hill missing an entire season. Shaq may be at 90% for that season, but Hill is out, period.

IMO Spreewell is a difficult personality and player. He missed an entire season due to a blow up that was consistent with his behavior, as Artest missed an entire season due to a blow up that was consistent with his behavior. JR Rider and Eddie Griffin couldn't hang in the NBA because they were loose cannons. Marbury has hung around because of his overwhelming ability, but he's obviously not the most stable player. Spree may become a more effective player in a different situation, but IMO he, like Artest and Rider, will always have behavioral problems.

The question for me is if a GM can create a situation where that player won't be AS MUCH of a problem. IMO there WILL be blow ups with certain players and we have a historical timetable for when those blow ups will happen, just as we have a historical timetable for when severe injuries may happen. For me, the issue is deciding whether minor injuries or issues can be overcome. If a player is just plain crazy, I could expect them to be better in a more positive situation, but I'd still know that they have behavioral problems.

IMO a player's production can be affected in significant ways. What if prime Iverson was put in a situation where he had a legitimate #2 option?

What would Kemp's career arc look like if he were never traded to Cleveland? For me, I look at Kemp's significant decline once he was traded to Portland. The year before that, he started to decline, but his first two years in Cleveland, he obviously still had it, so I can infer that he would still be a very productive player in Seattle. The difference is that I won't have him as my #1 option in Seattle, so his efficiency/energy should be greater, his usage will be lower, and his production should look more similar to his Seattle days rather than his Cleveland days.

No. We can't simply assume that an injury of that magnitude never happened. The Pistons GM has a really great grasp of the concept and he's aware of the limited time that he has Grant Hill as a top 5 player.

Penny Hardaway, Steve Francis... there are many examples of players who will be great for a little while but a burden later on...

There is a lot of room for interpretation in this game and we'll be making the case for certain players. Kendall Gill staying in Seattle and playing well is a whole lot more believable than Hill being the NBA's Ironman or Spreewell/Artest being an angel and never having a significant blow up.

Grant Hill is not that big a deal since his injury happens 3 weeks before be becomes a FA. Use him, break him and release him just like the NFL. No GM should take Grant Hill on that Magic contract. Thats insane.

Question RE: Dominique Wilkens.

He left for Europe, but was that soley because he was on the Clippers? If he was on a different team would he have stayed?

I ask both the b-ball historians and Sabas how that would be perceived.

Jim Jackson is on the Trading Block

He has 4 years/28.8 million left.

His averages over that span are 19.3/5.1/4 on .441 FG%, .344 3pt% and .814FT%.

He misses 30 games in 94-95 but only 11 over the last 3 seasons.

Rod Strickland is also on the block

19.2 PTs/9.5 AST/3.5 REB is his averages over the 4 year span.

4 years/21.72 million left on contract.

Misses 20 games in 94-95 and 95-96 (available for play-offs both years) and only 6 over his last two seasons.

Looking for future picks for both players.

Nique left for Europe from the Celtics. Nique went to Italy for more $$$$ and I beleive he won the Euro league championship and MVP. Some say he was a man amoung boys but others I have talked to said he wasnt the best player on his team and a ballhog that has no concept of Euro ball (not that thats a bad thing).

Blazer

You stole Strickland from me passing on the best rebounder in the NBA who would be a perfect fit for your Mavs. Please AIM me Battleshipruss so we can work out a trade and I can go back to building a team that destroys the 96 Bulls.
