Lets make an offer to David Lee

Post#1 » by HotShots » Sun Aug 9, 2009 5:31 pm

I know we will have to make room for him first. I think Lee is an excellent player. He plays with heart and gives you his all every night. He is looking for 10mil a year but so far no takers. I think we can a make a reasonable offer for him where we still have room for a top free agent. The only way to get Lebron is to make this team a playoff team. We have to make this team attractive for a top free agent in 2010. We got a great pg and center. That right there put us a head of the game from most teams with money to spend in 2010. Yi and Courtney Lee have potential to be great players. I think Courtney more than Yi. I think Courtney is going to be a starter in this league for years to come.

David Lee is young and the guy we need to hustle for rebounds. Let there be a little competition for Yi to start. Either way we need a guy to rotate at 4 and 5. Forget about Boone and Williams! David Lee will fit great with Lopez. David is a younger version of Boozer without the knee problems. He is just going to get better every year.

What's the worst that happens Knicks match........good we made them use some of there 2010 money. We are one of the top teams to get a top free agent in 2010.

New Jersey Nets

New Jersey has one of the best opportunities to land a big-time free agent. The Nets are likely to be somewhere between $25 million and $27 million under the cap, depending on where they draft and the number of cap holds they have on their roster next summer.

Personal I would like to steal him from the Knicks. Not for 10mil a year maybe 7-8mil a year........around 35-40mil for 5 years. He definately deserves it.

Nets aren't going to sign a guy to take significant minutes away from Yi until they officially deem him to be a bust. I like David a lot, he needs to work on his mid-range game and defense though. I just don't see him as the move our management would make right now.

This actually crossed my mind at one point but if we do that then he's gonna be the starting 4. You don't give a guys 8 mil a year to come off the bench. I like what i've been hearing about Yi this off season. I know it's against weak competiton but with where are team is now i would like to give Yi another shot to claim that spot. With that said I like Lee's game and think we could give him a look next year possibly as that 2nd tier guy.

Lets Not!

Like I have said before, some guys are not worth $10 mil. Lee is definitely one of them.

Lee's stats are like my inflatable mattress. When u first buy it feels nice and firm until you put your 300 lb friend on it. Slowly it loses its strength, starts to leak and shows it's true form.

Here's the thing: I would love to screw with NYK's capspace by making them match an offer we made for Lee. The worst case scenario in my mind is if the Knicks DON'T match. Then we're on the hook for a PF I don't really think we need. He's good, not doubt, but not a perfect fit IMO. Anyway, he'd still be a tradable asset, once teams start to figure out where they stand in the pecking order next season.

The problem is that we're over the salary cap. Well below the luxury tax, sure, but we can't offer more than the MLE to David. I'm sure other have inquired with the same amount, and I don't believe he's willing to take a deal that low. We would have to negotiate a S&T for him, which would defeat the ulterior purpose (sabotaging NYK's capspace).

P.S. Ain't it funny how in January folks in NY (D'Antoni included) were pushing for Lee to be an All-Star, and now they don't even want him on their payroll!

While it is amusing, I don't think it's the Knicks not wanting to pay Lee, but for cap reasons, they just don't want to pay him now.

The cap hold on a UFA with full Bird rights is 1.5x the previous year's salary. If Lee plays out his 1-year tender, his cap hold for 2010/11 would be only $4,023,074, a total that isn't just a bargain, but small enough that they can sign a max-FA and then they can go over the cap to take care of Lee. Even on a MLE deal (which for Lee is a steal), his cap charge in 2010/11 would be around $6.3 million.

Right now NYK has $27.336 million committed to 6 players. Assuming a $53.5 million cap and that Lee plays out his 1-year tender, the Knicks would have about $19.7 million in cap space while maintaining the rights to Lee.

Granted I compared Lee to my air mattress, but for $4 mil, I think he fits the moose type player Thorn would be looking for just without the D. Anyway Knicks clearly match that offer.
