OT: Fox's best NBA shooters

Post#1 » by campybatman » Mon Aug 10, 2009 1:47 am

Here's the full list according to John Galinsky. The name on this list who jumps off at you the most is Yao, for his size and the position he plays, incredible. It's unfortunate he has a proneness for injuries or has had ridiculous "bad luck" in his NBA career.

He shoots the team's technical shot. Are you serious?! I remember that was mentioned this season, and it surprised me to hear since I was unaware of that. And his career percentages in field goals and free throws are .525 and .832, respectively.

Of the players missing the list, you could make the case that Kevin Martin might have been number eleven. He's similar to Durant in that he's a pure scorer. Go to him if you need points.

1. Steve Nash
2. Ray Allen
3. Kobe Bryant
4. Dirk Nowitzki
5. Ben Gordon
6. Kevin Durant
7. Yao Ming
8. Jose Calderon
9. Pau Gasol
10. Maurice Williams

Usually when you see a list of the best NBA shooters, you get the top 3-point marksmen. That's not what FOXSports.com NBA editor John Galinsky had in mind while compiling this list. Long-range accuracy is one way to measure a shooter, but far from the only one. There's also a soft touch around the basket and from the foul line, shooting on the move, shooting under defensive pressure, clutch shooting and the (nearly) lost art of the midrange shot. Versatility is key. That's why you don't see 3-point specialists like Jason Kapono and Kyle Korver, or even a great midrange shooter like Richard Hamilton, and certainly not dunking machines like Shaq and Dwight Howard. Under strong consideration, but missing the cut, were Carmelo Anthony, Andrea Bargnani, Chauncey Billups, Danny Granger, Rashard Lewis, Kevin Martin, Troy Murphy, Mehmet Okur, Paul Pierce, Michael Redd, Brandon Roy and Jason Terry.

Nash's shot isn't as picturesque as Ray Allen's, but he gets the nod here because of accuracy and variety. Nash is the only player ever to shoot over 50 percent from the field, 40 percent on 3-pointers and 90 percent from the line for three straight seasons. And it's not like he just takes open shots.

Ray Allen's jumper is like a work of art — the symmetry, the form, the technical mastery — but the real beauty is that it looks the same each time. Same spring off the floor, same quick release, same flawless follow-through. Not always the same result, obviously, but no one's been more consistent and prolific over the past decade than Allen, who is second (to Reggie Miller) on the NBA career 3-pointers list and fifth in free-throw percentage.

It wasn't simply his size; several other NBA players have been 7-foot-6. It's that he was the first guy that tall with the shooting skills to match. Yao's form is impeccable, making him deadly from 18 feet and in. He even took technical foul shots for the Rockets. Throw in the accuracy of his hooks and turnarounds, and you have the rare giant who thrived with finesse rather than force.

Ehhh, I don't know about Gasol and Mo, but I can't hate on the rest of that list. I think house should have made top ten.

Galinsky clearly stated he wasn't going to count three point specialists or dunking machines on the list, therefore House is out. I call my self a fan of his, but Eddie can't do anything on a basketball court except chuck threes.

However, it does seem like purposefully excluding Richard Hamilton, who has shot very well from the three as well as having his terrific midrange game, seemed a little strange.

And then he includes Mo Williams and Gasol which is odd, but whatever I guess.

Pierce deserves to be on that list.

He and Kobe are level at the mid-range, but Pierce is clearly the better 3-point shooter and both are as good from the FT line. You do the math.

Hahaha wow, Gasol is on the list? Doesn't he regularly pass up wide open jumpers? Maybe Dwight should be on it, since dunks are a type of shot...

Admittedly, I was surprised when I'd reached number two and saw Ray's name. Then I'd thought: Who's number one?

I reckon it depends on one's criteria in determining the top choices. Because that can possibly skew it in the favor of some over others.

In the way he values shooters (see his explanation), Kevin Garnett most definately should have been mentioned
"Watching his work ethic, his dedication and, again, his passion that he brings every single day. It's something that I've looked at and said that if I had to design a NBA player, I'd first design him with the heart of Kevin Garnett." Jet

I have no problem with Nash as No. 1. He's an incredible shooter. He does it on the run, with hands in his face, from anywhere on the court. Of course if Ray was one on the list, I'd have no problem with that too. It's really a tough call there. What in the world is Mo Will doing on that list, though? LOL

I doubt that's true. Guys like Korver and House can shoot from anywhere - its just that the three point line is their best shot as it counts for more points, and it's easier to get open from there. Do you really think Dirk could beat House in a game of horse? I doubt it.

Guys like Pierce and Kobe are good shooters too - don't get me wrong. But its their size and athleticism that gets them more shots. In a pure shooting contest I think they would lose to guys who are in the league because of shooting. House, Korver, Salim etc etc.

The basics of shooting are the same for three point shots and closer shots. So if you have good fundamentals you can shoot from anywhere on the floor that you have practiced..

Not to be a homer, but in what galaxy is Nash (who is a damn good shooter, don't get me wrong) a better shooter than Ray? :o

Thats a pretty good list. Gasol is the only one that baffles me, but a list like this can be so objective. Some of you wana trash Mo because hes on the Cavs i guess? The guy went on THE best 3pt shooting tear of this past season, he shot over 90% from the line and has all types of floaters and mid range shots, and he was very consistent. I had him on my fantasy team which was a daily set-lineup league and im well aware of his production. Dont use Lebron setting him up as an excuse, he had a much better fg% in MIL the year before on high volume shooting.

Rip could have been on there, but then again he just recently added the 3pt shot to his arsenal. Hes in my top 12. Billups isnt far behind, neither is Pierce or Redd, and Carmelo is coming on strong but hes still a bit prone to bad shot selection. If hes more disciplined this year he cracks my top 15.

There should have had been a list comprised of only the league's best shooting big men (power forwards and centers).

House is a great shooter, quick release from anywhere on the court.

Billups should have been on the list.
