Shelden Williams signed to bi-annual?
Davis, 23, signed a two-year deal worth $6.3 million. Williams, 25, a one-year bi-annual exception contract worth $1.9 million.

Is this a misprint or do the Celtics have a Daniels trade already in place?
Very Interesting. I wonder if some trade restrictions are holding up a possible deal that can't be completed until later this summer.
Keep an eye out on this one.

If you believe this guy at all then there seems to be something up regarding Daniels that he can't talk about because it would put his source in danger.
I would keep an eye on this one. Especially if Shelden Williams did receive the bi-annual exception.

I'm curious if Dell'Apa screwed up again. That guy hasn't earned my trust yet.

Re: Shelden Williams signed to bi-annual?
It is hard to believe Williams would get the bi-annual. It wasn't like teams were battling to get him. He could barely get on the floor for two of the crappiest teams in the league last year.
It also seems like the bi-annual slot was promised to Daniels, and there is no evidence of a S&T that would obviate the need for the bi-annual for Daniels.

Ainge could have a trade already set up that hasn't been anounced yet in that case there is no need for the bi-annual for Daniels. Just because the media hasn't reported it doesn't mean that a trade isn't in place. That's what makes the Globe report interesting. I wish this could be confirmed.

For the record, they also reported POB got the biannual last year. And they want us to pay for their content in the future? LOL.

Re: Shelden Williams signed to bi-annual?
doubt it, but if a sign and trade was agreed upon i wouldnt be surprised because none of the pg options are likely to be worth the lle. however we would have to hear about the sign and trade soon because they couldnt have used the lle on williams unless they were already assured of trading for daniels...
my other two thoughts on this are that it is beneficial to the Cs as well as daniels to pay him more money because it also means he would probably be here more than one year, and that im surprised indiana has been so reluctant to trade for TA because honestly, for all his warts, no one they can get otherwise will be a better player at the end of their bench. and for all the talk of his "character concerns" while legit, they pale in comparison to the guys bird had to get out of town so i dont understand why he woouldnt take TA over getting zero compensation

Re: Shelden Williams signed to bi-annual?
Yeah, the Globe's report has now been surreptitiously changed to now read that Williams signed for the 1.3 million veteran's minimum salary. I echo Banks2Pierce in wondering, "they expect us to pay for this crap?"
The leaks are real...the news is fake.
I'm just here for the memes.

We've reached out to Dell'Apa for clarification.
UPDATE: Shelden Williams has signed for the veteran minimum. So the Bi-annual exception is still out there and available for Marquis Daniels. Thanks to Frank Dell'Apa for getting back to us so quickly.

Gotta love the reporting.

I think most of these guys have little clue as to the difference between the biannual/vet min/LLE

Re: Shelden Williams signed to bi-annual?
lol, i remember when the globe sports staff was the cream of the crop. then mcdonough died, the globe couldnt keep great young talent like michael holley or michael smith, they kept around people who got too full of themselves (ryan, macmullan, shaughnessy).
theyve earned their own gradual demise.
that said, i do like mike reiss a lot, and i normally like dell'apa

Re: Shelden Williams signed to bi-annual?
That is just horrible reporting!
BTW, Williams is a 5 year veteran, how is it possible for him to make 1,3 mio? A 10+ year veteran can get that, his contract should be $959,111...

I think Shelden Williams actually gets $1.3 million but the league reimburses the Celtics X amount of money so that only a portion counts towards the Celtics payroll.
So in HoopsHype example, Williams gets $1.3 million from the Celtics and the league gives the Celtics $474,503 money back so it only costs the Celtics the $825,497 and this is used for the salary cap purposes.
but I'm not sure.

No that is not correct.
When a player has been in the NBA for three or more seasons, and is playing under a one-year, ten-day or rest-of-season contract, the league actually reimburses the team for part of his salary - any amount above the minimum salary level for a two-year veteran. For example, in 2005-06 the minimum salary for a two-year veteran is $719,373, so for a ten-year veteran, with a minimum salary of $1,138,500, the league would reimburse the team $419,127. Only the two-year minimum salary is included in the team salary, not the player's full salary. They do this so teams won't shy away from signing older veterans simply because they are more expensive when filling out their last few roster spots.

I think there is some truth to what you write, but it would be nice to get accurate reporting in any case. We shouldn't have posters speculating - the writer should know this stuff and understand the significance. Dell,Appa also reported that Baby would be restricted again next year if he signed a qualifying offer, which was questioned. Dell-Appa has to realize that the details of these things is really what we are looking for. The whole world knows that Baby has signed. The details - which is what he needs to be an expert at - is important. People start thinking everything from Daniels changed his mind to the Celtics have a sign and trade lined up just with his carelessness in getting the facts about Williams. I hope this Gary Washburn gets the job done. Spears was outstanding and was the best any of these papers ever had. Before Spears the Herald and Globe might well have said "closed for the summer" in regards to basketball reporting.
Brad Stevens on fans who want the Celtics to tank: "I don’t think they’ll like me all that much then."

Re: Shelden Williams signed to bi-annual?
As a 3 year veteran Shelden Williams will get $855,000 and the C's will pay him at the 2 year veteran rate of $825,000 the league picks up the difference.
What confuses reporters is that the BI Annual exception was originally referred to as the "1 million dollar veteran exception" based on it's original value and who it could be used on. Then it was called the LLE or Lower Level Exception and that isn't a nice way to say I am paying 1.9 mil bucks. So they went to the Bi Annual Exception, because you can use it every two years.
So when a reporter hears "veteran exception," the nice way to say the minimum and there is a significant difference between the veteran and rookie minimum, they think of the Bi Annual exception.

Re: Shelden Williams signed to bi-annual?
I think you're right. And Williams was definitely signed for the vet minimum. If we can't workout a trade for Daniels we should use those pieces to trade for a backup PG. And I'd still like to see Bowen picked up.
