Jays @ Yanks: No Halladay ain't no Holiday

Post#1 » by Dr. Detfink » Mon Aug 10, 2009 11:45 am

After crushing the Red Sox nation, the evil empire marches on to host the Toronto Blue Jays. This is a tricky 3 game set because the Yanks would love to take at least two out of three, while an exhausted Red Sox team tangles with the Tigers' top of the rotation.

Game 1: It's Mitre time! If he can last 5 innings without giving up more than 4 runs, the Yanks have even money to win this game.

Game 2: Richmond vs. Chamberlain. Any one wonder why the Yanks don't skip a start with Joba right now? I mean, this is the game that you would skip unless they plan to have him pitch in Boston.

Game 3: Romero vs. Burnett. Romero can be nasty. He's been inconsistent as of late but he won't be easy for the Yanks to put on runs.

Hard to get excited about this match up but it is very exciting.

Actually his last start wasn't that bad if goes out there and gives us 5 or 4 solid innings I'd/'ll be more than happy, but One never knows from inning to inning what he'll do, He had the chance to perform and simply has not done so with any consistency.

Gaudin soon???? If anything I think Hughes will replace Joba. Mitre replacement, who knows, number 5 anyway, maybe no one.

Mitre's start definitely had me thinking about the importance of Joba. You can live with a #5 sucking a dick but now, you can't have a innings limit on a pitcher without a decent starter ready to take over.

Another irritation. Hughes has been used for 2 batters in the last 2 appearances. Why did we use Aceves again? The guy's getting over worked much like Coke.

You overuse Coke and Aceves, you put yourself in a situation where they can't come in during a tight game for a top of the rotation starter.

Just hate that babying **** they do with Hughes. If he's not here to help us win send him down! I Last night, one inning...that couldn't hurt at all.

Phil Hughes has appeared in 31 games this season and has pitched 65.2 innings.

Alfredo Aceves has appeared in 30 games and has pitched 57.1 Innings.

Phil Coke has appeared in 53 games and has pitched 47 Innings.

Not to keep saying it because I've said it a million times, but just because you don't use somebody doesn't mean you are babying them. By Aceves pitching 3 innings last night, he was already going to unavailable for the rest of this series and we have an off day Thursday, so he had 3 days of rest coming up, so why not push him the extra inning instead of wasting Hughes? What if Hughes gets in some trouble and has a long inning, then we're stuck without Aceves AND Hughes for tonight's game all because we had to use them in a loss? Aceves was already done, so there is no reason to take it out on the rest of the bullpen too. Ace hasn't been overworked, but he has had to save the pen a few times...nothing wrong with that.

So uh...who's a solid 5 pitcher available in the offseason to make me forget Mitre was ever here? Then again, Hughes would probably be that guy so our pitching offseason will probably just be to bolster the bullpen.

Then again...why am I talking about next year when we do have a good shot at going all the way this year?

Aceves doesn't have the tools that Hughes has. That's why he gets progressively worse and let's not exclude the fact, he's been much more mortal in his last 3 appearances when Girardi used him as a long reliever. In my opinion, he shouldn't even BE there for a third inning.

Let's also not exclude the fact, much of Hughes innings can be attributed to his mediocre appearances as a starter. Pitching once every 5 days is very different than coming out every 1-2 days and firing in the 90s on every pitch.

So YES, Hughes is being BABIED. Say it with me Yankee fans BABIED. When you have a young man with that kind of stuff limited to 2 appearances 1 batter each in the last week...pathetic. REALLY PATHETIC.

What's the point of having him then? You can resurrect Jaret Wright if you need ONE out. Geezus.

I don't like where this is going. Aceves and Coke are making too many appearances. It wouldn't shock me if by September one and/or the other has dead arm.
