Greek teams stacking up with EX NBA players...

Post#1 » by slickgreek » Tue Aug 11, 2009 1:04 am

Ira Newble-Aris BC

Von Wafer- Olympiakos (2 years 5 million euros)

Kleiza- Olympiakos (2 years 12.5 million euros)

Josh Childress- Olympiakos

Nick Calathes- 2nd round draft pick by (Minnesota) Panathinaikos

Allen Iverson- A possibility...

Houston and Denver both take a decent size hit by losing these 2 players. Wafer was a a quick scorer who can score in bunches and Kleiza was the glue to Denver. These players left the NBA for a bigger pay check and get to play for one of the top teams in Europe.

To me it doesnt seem like a bad offer. You get to move to Europe (temporary), make more money, experience a different lifestyle, and play for a championship caliber team. Not a bad trade at all? What do you guys think?

I wouldnt say these guys are really weak? Maybe Ira Newble? But as for Wafer and Childress and Kleiza, there decent role players but not scrubs...

it is an international game. and these guys get paid just like they get paid here. different land. different country. of course we have better amenities out here. but hey, a paycheck is a paycheck. and those players are still good. still have game. so why not?

Casualties of the Salary cap...

I'm more for the cap than against, otherwise it'd be just the big markets winning w/ the ocassional small market winning (see MLB) and I can't blame them for jumping to play overseas... money is money, take the money, heck I would.

I agree, I feel like Kleiza leaving Denver makes Denver the 4th best team in the west now...

with the cap getting even lower.. i wouldn't be surprise to see more nba players going to europe. Im not really that disappointed to see them go to europe. New experience, a little bigger paycheck, option to opt out after 1-2yrs..plus definitely more playing time.
I say, if you're still young and many years to play.. why not.

IMO Wafer's a bad seed who's only a gunner. Kleiza really is a loss to Denver, but maybe only because he lit us up frequently.

With NBA careers going longer and longer. All the young players need to get a chance and if they can get it over seas and get a good pay out of it. I really see it as a good thing. Why sit on the end of the bench or in the D-league and get low balled.

It will all change if a Kobe or LBJ type of player goes over seas. Then we will hear about money and keeping your prime players here and not letting them go UFA.

Times change.

What's going to be interesting is i these players who go overseas are going to be able to transition their way back to the NBA.

Return to Los Angeles Lakers
