Spears to be replaced by Gary Washburn

Post#1 » by Cyclical » Sun Aug 9, 2009 5:42 pm

Apparently an ex-Sonics writer. I hope he's good.

Congrats to ex-Sonics writer Gary Washburn, a former LA Daily News colleague of mine, for replacing me at The Boston Globe to cover the NBA

Never heard of him. But I never really liked Spears, so I'm okay with it.

I feel the same way. While I thought Spears was a good reporter as far as uncovering stories, I thought his basketball analysis was kind of lackluster. I read much better analysis at RealGM.

If he's half as good as Spears, I'm happy. I thought Mark did a great job, especially giving some inside "feel" to what is going on around the Celts org.

+1

Surprised to see Mark go already, I thought he was a great replacement of that chick before him who was saying Big Al wasn't included in the KG deal.

Hopefully he is as good as Spears. He seemed to have some solid connections and he approached his job with a level of common sense, which is seriously lacking in the media today. Also, he did it with a very calm demeanor, rather than the obnoxious behavior of all these other tools in the media today.

Yea, and I think it was her who put up the blog that the KG deal was not going to include Al Jefferson. Just unacceptable reporting.

Well, in her defense, she responded via email to me and said her "source" told her at the time they were not trading Al. She brought that to her editor and they said to report it. She said it happens all the time where GMs use reporters to help "negotiate." If Ainge told her "we have no intention of including Al in a deal for KG", what is she supposed to do? Not report it, even if she thought it was bull?

I think reporters should stop worrying about breaking a story and start to focus more on their articles.
