The UFC set to counter Strikeforce this Saturday with UFC 100 replay
The UFC are at it again with their counter programming policy, this time targeting Saturdays Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg event with the historic UFC 100 show from last month.
It has been revealed that the UFC will counter with several bouts from the night in question free on SPIKE TV, although the order has not been confirmed. Past experiences would expect them to run the majority of the main card which featured championship bouts between Brock Lesnar, Frank Mir, Georges St. Pierre and Thiago Alves.
The UFC have used this tactic in the past to great effect with Affliction and have made it public that they are not on good terms with Strikeforce, especially since the California based promotion snapped up WAMMA heavyweight champion, Fedor Emelianenko.

Why would anybody want to watch UFC 100 when they already know the results and it wasnt an exciting card to begin with?
It really is mind boggling how anybody would choose UFC over a very solid strikeforce card.

Is the Strikeforce card really a ppv? I thought it was just on Showtime.

This is not a move to stop people here from watching, it is a move to keep the casual fan from watching. The guy who sees UFC and stops switching. Or the guy who is choosing between UFC and some company he doesn't know.
And it will work.

Well the idea is any viewer won is good.
UFC is the brand people know, and if your flicking through and see UFC, some not so knowledgeable "fans" might just stick on the UFC. It can side track people and so on and so forth.
Also with the addition of more undercard fights, that a lot may have missed you get the "i'll just watch this fight then go back to strike force".
But for something that cost's the UFC next to nothing to do, any damage to strikeforce is good damage, they don't have to risk of splitting off potential ppv buyers or viewers on a proper event, and if strike force do come up badly, well it just gives more fodder.
Its a simple plan/idea, but on "short" notice (i.e since the Fedor signing) its an easy thing for the UFC to execute. Since Strikeforce don't do as many cards, and do announce them quite far ahead - in the future I could well see counter promoting on the nights.

Vince never did this.
Eric Bischoff did it to Vince.
Vince had the Monday night wrestling program and Eric put it up against Vince in order to create a war, and Eric had the bigger pocket book with Ted Turner backing him.
Unless you mean Vince in the old WWWF, AWA etc years.

And so the war begins.
In related news Spike is also going to start airing the best fights of Pride next year. Probably because there are just so many times you can re-watch the same UFC fights on UFC Unleashed. I doubt Fedor will be featured though.

Vince didn't do what Dana did, he was 100x more ruthless. When the WWF was going national, he began syndicating programming in their territories (instead of staying in the northeast, where Vince Sr. operated), which pissed off promoters who didn't have the money to go on television. And using the money he got from advertising and TV deals to steal talent from the regional promotions which put them out of business. When the N.W.A. was planning to put Starrcade on PPV, Vince created Survivor Series and told the cable operators that anyone who picked up Starrcade would not be able to air Survivor Series. The Royal Rumble and Summerslam were also created to cut the legs off from big N.W.A. events.
When Vince complained about Bischoff counterprogramming RAW on Monday nights with Nitro and going after him aggressively, many in the business found it ironic.

Re: UFC playing Hardball.Free UFC 100 to counter Strikeforce PPV
I think this is a good move by Dana and the UFC. Zero risk with a possibility of a small reward. Maybe some people didn't want to shell out the money for the ppv can now get to see the fight. I know I always try to watch fights that I didn't get on ppv when ever they are on TV.
Besides, I think the strikeforce card is pretty weak. I always love seeing Gina, even if she isn't fighting
. With Diaz not fighting because of his 'missed' drug test, who else is on the card. Bobalu? Don't get me wrong, these lesser known or ability guys are very capable of putting on a good show but...

That is dope, I really miss Pride. All I have is about 5 hrs of Pride fights at the pad, I need more for my video bank. Is it me or does alot of the ground work in Pride seem much more technical ? More Subs, less gnp/lnp.

Yeah, I agree.
I'm not sure if it was because of the yellow card system, or just because they had less fighters with a wrestling base, but the ground work was a lot more fun to watch.
As for the counterprogramming, I'm not sure why, but it always makes me really happy to hear news like this.

I've actually heard people refer to MMA as UFC...so that just shows how popular it is, and exactly like what some of you guys were saying, if someone sees UFC 100 on the guide for their tv, their going to watch that over Strikeforce...
pretty solid move, but people who are actually into MMA know a good card when they see one...
soo it won't really matter:D

Definitely. I noticed that a lot too. MMA is called UFC, kinda like how some people refer to music videos as MTV's LOL

Nothing makes me want to rip someones arm off more than "I train UFC", that is the ultimate line for the Affliction wearing poser Douche. I truly enjoy taking cats like that to school.
