Jet Says Mavs Are 'A Piece Away'

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Wed Aug 12, 2009 11:53 pm

“This is going to be our year!’’ Jason Terry tells me, and I am only slightly moved. After all, doesn’t the always ebullient Jet think every year is going to be our year? I’m sure that he’s sincerely believed that it’s been his year since 1977, when he emerged from the womb and responded to the doctor’s butt tap not with a newborn’s cry but with the words, “Doc, this is going to be our year!’’

But then Jet and I start discussing the details of why he believes the 2009 Dallas Mavericks might be something special. And something becomes clear: While only time will tell if he’s correct, his belief isn’t just based on his by-rote confidence but also by his analysis of the Mavs roster – and what he terms “one or one-and-a-half’’ remaining needs.

“Believe what I’m telling you,’’ Terry says. “I like our team, the way we’ve put this team together. We’re one piece or maybe one-and-half pieces away.’’

Jet, speaking to me at his Jason Terry Foundation kids basketball camp in Plano (I’ll have the Video Visit up in a bit) is very specific in his thoughts on the Mavs’ personnel. We talked about veteran teammates Dirk, Josh and Kidd, and about newcomers Shawn Marion and Drew Gooden, and of course, about Terry himself.

“My No. 1 goal is to win a championship,’’ says Terry, who adds that his No. 2 goal is to be a back-to-back winner of the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award. Link

I can't wait to see what that one piece is and the cost to get them. Sept 9th to Nov 30th.

I would agree with him. The question is just whether Cubes and Donnie can get it done. Sadly, Gortat was at least 1/2 of that piece. Maybe even 3/4.

Well that one piece is Dwight Howard, Dwayne Wade, Kobe Bryant, or Lebron James. We have no assets to get those guys so I think techincally the Mavs are much more than one piece away.

Neither does any other team. What we do have is the assets to get Chris Bosh, Joe Johnson, or someone of that ilk... and its called the DUST Chip. But that is next summer...

What about now? Well, we have the Buck Shot, to go after a Dalembert-type player. If we opt not use the Buck Shot, we can just waive him and save some dough. But wait, there's more! Gooden's contract is similar to Buckner's! We have so much flexibility it isn't even funny. Our guaranteed books for next season are under the cap.

We have a TON of assests for trade bait to any team that wants to shed some $$. We are the deepest team in the league, have the best rebounding starting 5 in the biz and a great coach. What's not to like?

If you are a prospective free agent looking to come here, there is a lot to like. It's just that, as a fan, do you trust cuban and donnie to get it done?

its okay to be a homer but your taking it too far, if u think erick dampier is going to pull any of those names your smoking sherm, atlleast 10 teams will be under the cap nxt yr and all of which have pieces more desirable for those guys then we do
