Will Sheed post up this year?

Post#1 » by JHTruth » Wed Aug 12, 2009 11:48 pm

Is he still capable? I'm just curious because we could use a little more post play this year. It's kind of scary to think Sheed will be out there doing nothing but jacking 3's all year. Thoughts?

I hope so.

Maybe only a little in the regular season as he coasts behind the three. But at the very least in the post season I hope he posts up. It's undoubted that we don't have a post player outside of KG and Sheed would be invaluable to our team [and defense] if he could get us set shots close to the rim through posting up.

Perk posts up. Do you watch Celtics games? He has actually improved to be somewhat adequate. A long way from getting nothing from backboard on his hook shot back in the dark ages a few years ago.

No, I don't see him subjecting himself to the pounding at his age (Wallace posting up). That's why Rondo's ability to penetrate and finish is going to be very important for this team. Pierce will do it in spurts, but he's also getting on in years. So, it has to be Rondo.

This is a very perimeter oriented team. They need slashers who will attack the rim. KG will have his share of ally-oop attempts. But they need Pierce, Daniels, and Rondo to attack the middle of the defense.

Say what you want about him, but Tony Allen also is generally very effective as a slasher, it's the outside shot that is very limited. Tony is a very dangerous scorer when left to attack the rim. If they can find a way to get his sole offensive focus to attack the rim or work the ball. If they could confine his responsibilities to slashing on offense and playing shut down defense, TA would help this team.

In summary, I don't see RW or KG begin posting up an inordinent about of time this year. Instead I believe the interior scoring will consist of Perkins on the box or dibble penetration. The team is set with presently 7 shooters, which means you can always play with 3 on the court if not more.

7 shooters are: Ray Allen, House, Pierce, Garnett, Wallace, Baby, Scalabrine, perhaps Hudson or other FA signee

Expected to dribble drive for scoring opportunities: Rondo, Pierce, Daniels, TA

Expected to pick and roll or ally-oop: Garnett

I think this helps illustrate why I focus on who can attack the middle of the defense. Why I have some use for Tony Allen. I also believe that the Celts biggest need is a combo guard who can attack inside as well as outside, maybe Hudson has the attack dog mentality that Pruitt was sorely lacking.

when Kev and Rasheed play, one of them will have to post up a little more to use the same offense we've been using. Looking at Sheed's hotspots on nba.com, he shot 90 close shots last year, and made 56.7%. His post baseline shots are in the 45% range (90 a piece), and from just inside the free throw line area, he shoots 60% (only 15 shots though). For some reason, I can't' see the Celtics data, mikki moore is listed like 12 times, but I think that's pretty comparable to KG. Perk shoots a higher percentage, but in the clutch we'll be looking to either KG or Sheed to get us a bucket down low.

Opening up the offense a little more isn't going to be a bad thing, I just hope Sheed is discriminant with his 3 point shot selection, as said above, we have plenty of slashers on this team, and Rondo will especially benefit from more shooters (since he can't shoot.) I don't see us turning into Orlando or Toronto and relying on the three to win.

I think Sheed is still very much capable of posting up, and I'm sure he wouldn't mind if the need arises. However, I don't see him doing it on a regular basis.

No. But I read (I think) that he'd admitted that he should have had been more of a post presence in the past.

Hence, why you need a post player at power forward to play with Wallace in the second unit. Davis isn't a post player, he's more like a finesse player or a lesser player to Gomes. Garnett has Perkins to complement him which allows him to drift outside of the post. Likewise, Wallace would need someone to focus on the rebounding, inside scoring and defense. Maybe that player is Williams. But he won't see a lot of time off the bench on account of Davis. I read that Davis is working on adding three-point range to his shooting as oppose to working on having some semblance of post moves. He needs to develop into an interior threat offensively and defensively with Powe gone. If he and Wallace are playing more outside of the post, then who's inside rebounding? Perhaps, Rivers could employ a lineup that includes all three: Wallace, Davis and Williams. Williams being the undersized center or having Powe's role.

A 34 year old player just doesn't change his stripes after a full career as a mostly perimeter oriented offensive player. He posts up even less than KG. When he does it's mostly outside the paint. He's always been and will always be labeled as a guy who never fulfilled his natural talent potential, and rightfully so.

I think he'll be of great help to the Celts for obvious reasons (mostly defensive and occasionally as a shooter) but I personally was never a big fan of his game. With Powe gone Perk is now our only real "paint" guy. Sheldon is as well but may not crack to rotation and is not going to be a real threat.

Sheed is not going to be "out there doing nothing but jacking 3's all year" as you put it. First off, on offense, KG has gone away from his actual post game more and more. That hasn't hurt us at all. Perk has really developed so we are fine there. Sheed will be like older KG just taking 3's rather than KG's money mid-range J's. Not a bad thing at all since Perk will be clogging the lane as it is, and Pierce and Rondo are some of the best slashers in the L. Both can find the open man, making this situation perfect for us.

Yes, he'll post up. He still has a nearly unblockable turn-around on the baseline.

Garnett has been getting 27-28% of his attempts "inside." Wallace hasn't really been that player ever and certainly not since he came to DET. Obviously it would be nice to see him improve on last seasons 11% but I think for the most part whether from 3 or mid range Wallace is a face up jump shooter at this point.

Sheed is a smart veteran player that will get his offense the best way according to the defense playing on him. This same thing will apply to KG also, as we have many options and defenses will have to be on their toes.

Sheed still has a post game when there are mismatches, but if you post him too much he gets fatigued.

The other issue that has yet to play out is how teams defend Boston with Sheed. In DET last season they lacked consistent perimeter threats outside of Wallace, so they needed him on the perimeter to open up the lane for the guards to penetrate.

Now one thing with Wallace that we see with Garnett is that even though their attempts come from 18-20 ft and further it doesn't mean they don't post up they just look to create against a collapsing defense and find the open man as opposed to taking on the double team. If you don't double either guy then sure they will go one on one in the post. Wallace hasn't been in that position since his early days as a Blazer and maybe his first season in DET when Okur was still there.

Sheed will post up for the first handful of games of the season, after that I can guaransheed you that he won't consistently spend any time in the low post.

This is just like the KG issue. No he isn't going to post up - get over it. Quite honestly just starting a move with your back to the basket doesn't really matter that much. Post players are good not just because they post up - its because they tend to be big strong guys (and thus they play in the post). Using a reverse pivot is fine with me. People cry way to much about this as if post play was some magical event.

Big strong guys like Perkins, Powe, Shaq etc can use their body to create space. Thus it makes sense for them to be in the post. Tall guys with length can use regular 'face up" moves to great effect.

Rasheed is there on offense for two things. One is obviously to score.

Just as importantly he is there as a decoy to draw big defenders away from the paint. Though Rasheed CAN score from a variety of spots his main value is the outside threat (as opposed to the outside shot itself). You can't leave him out there alone with no coverage or he will knock it down.

This will open up the lane for easy drives by Pierce, Rondo, Daniels, and others.

So when Rasheed stations himself on the outside much of the time PLEASE REMEMBER THIS: It's part of Doc's offensive design. It is not a sign of a weakness of character or some other piece of fiction brewed up by a combination of embittered-Piston-fans-driven-to-madness-by-the-Chauncey-Billups-trade, and good old fashioned Celtic haters (God bless their shriveled souls).

When he's out there with mostly bench players I imagine we will let him go to work. He's our best offensive creator on the bench and should eat up second line bigs.
