Friday, August 14
- Halladay picked up a win over the Orioles on Sunday, marking just his second victory over nine starts. The main culprit over that rough stretch was a lack of run support, though Toronto's offense provided seven runs in Doc's latest effort. Against Baltimore, Halladay logged nine innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and one walk. He issued a walk in the second inning to snap a run of 77 consecutive batters faced with no free passes and 51 hitters in a row without slipping to a three-ball count. In his career against the Rays, Halladay has gone 11-9 with a 3.61 ERA in 31 games.

Saturday, August 15
-With rookie left-hander Brett Cecil out for one start with a left knee injury, Tallet will fill in as a starter against the Rays. Tallet, who has not started since July 25, entered in relief of Cecil on Saturday against Baltimore and logged five shutout innings, during which he scattered four hits and ended with four strikeouts and one walk. In 18 starts for the Blue Jays this season, the left-hander has posted a 5-6 record with a 5.01 ERA.

Sunday, August 16
-On Monday night, the Yankees launched three home runs against Rzepczynski, who was making his second straight start against New York. The young lefty escaped with a no-decision after working just 3 1/3 innings -- the shortest outing of his career. Rzepczynski allowed four runs on seven hits with no strikeouts and one walk. Over his last four starts, the southpaw has gone 0-2 with a 6.16 ERA. Rzepczynski faced the Rays on July 7 in his big league debut, limiting Tampa Bay to one run over six innings of a no-decision.

Nice, Overbay, Scoots and Inglett getting it done early so that Doc can get himself into a groove, loving it!

Frightening stat from the Fan:

In three starts against the Rays Doc has an ERA of 2.50. Unfortunately he's still 0-2 because the team has averaged only 1.6 runs for him in these starts.

Something tells me Darrin Fletcher doesn't watch many Jays games.

I go away for 30 minutes and a Lind homer makes it 5-0, nice! This is all the run support that Doc needed in his last two starts against the Rays.

Doc really does have this legendary gear that he shifts to when he senses trouble.

And how about Roddy Roddy gunning down both Crawford and Upton? I got so pumped after each.

So, we've got Kazmir. He's 3-4 with an ERA a hair over 4 against us in 12 starts. In 06-08, he had an ERA of 3.38 and was 2-2 (also, he got SMOKED in his last start against us, inflating that ERA).

Worth mentioning is that he's rocking a .323 BAbip right now, and that's probably going to come down (though he has traditionally suffered a BAbip over .300 with the Rays).

He's not a guy who goes deep into games, though, only twice averaging 6+ IP/GS. If we jump on him early, he's done. His ERA is hugely disparate with his FIP (6.50 ERA, 4.99 FIP, ZIPS updated FIP projection 4.57).

What's he got... slightly above-average fastball velocity (just under 92 mph this year), a slider and a cutter. The heater moves a lot, so it's a good one, but his control has always been crap and this year he's not getting the strikeouts he usually gets, so he's been way less effective. His slider's been pretty crappy; he lost like 2-3 mph on his heater but like 5 mph on his slider.

I figure we have a good shot at hitting him hard again; he's getting 69% of balls put in play on him this year, which is a career-high. Now that his velocity is down, his crappy control is getting to him to the tune of a contact percentage of 81!!! He's not getting swinging strikes (14%, under his own average of around 20%), which is probably because his slider has been so terrible this year.

So hopefully we'll beat him up early and give Tallet the support he needs.

F'g Tallet.

It's good to see that Hill is hitting well, but Tallet has looked bad. All friggin' year. His FIP isn't far off of his terrible ERA, too. I guess to some extent it's that he's thrown 2x as many pitches this year as in any previous season, but he's a bad starter. He's getting contact almost as frequently as Kazmir (79%).

Scutaro with a hit and a walk already. Good stuff.

It WOULD figure that Kazmir is cruising against us. Decent strike percentage, lots of Ks, few walks, isn't getting killed...

Damnit.

Ok, let's not hit into a triple play here.

Well, that's another run and Kazmir's gone... that's something. That's a quality start, though.

Well, that's monstrously disappointing. The way Kaz has been pitching this year, we should have slammed him. Instead, Tallet got slammed like Kazmir should have been and we went quietly into that good night. Ugh. Good to know Wells was performing (1-4, 2 Ks), and Lind too (0-3, BB, 2 K).

Ah well, we ran into a guy who can be good when his heater is working and I guess it was. It was sitting 90-92 mph most of the night, which is still lower than what he normally works with, but apparently we just couldn't hit it, even though his slider was still nothing special. Wow. That's really sad.

EDIT: His fastball dipped as low as 88-89 mph. He threw two pitches at 93 and one at 94. So his heater wasn't really that great. Kaz wasn't working with anything special tonight. A flat slider mostly sitting 80-81, but as high as 82. 79-80 mph changeup. WTF? Ugh.
