Draft pick deadline: well, ****. No money, mo' problems
Monday is the deadline for signing draft picks, and the Jays still have a number of high picks outstanding:
- James Paxton, LHP, 1st round - supplemental
- Jake Eliopolous, LHP - 2nd round
- Jake Barrett, RHP - 3rd round
- Jake Marisnick - 3rd round
- Kris Hobson - 6th round
Keith Law apparently stated that he expects that the Jays will sign at least four of the above players...with Marisnick (who wants serious money, as he has stated that college is his first option) likely the guy on the outside. If so, that's not a bad result...getting Barrett has the potential to be a coup, and Hobson has some intriguing tools both as a potential power hitter or pitcher.
The downside there is that Marisnick was selected with the 3rd rounder we got as compensation from the Yankees when Burnett bolted, so if we fail to get Marisnick under contract we won't be reimbursed with a 3rd next year. All in all, though, it'd still be a pretty nice haul.

Re: Draft pick deadline looms
any scouting reports on Barett, Marisnick and Hobson? I know Paxton has great stuff but so and so command. I also read that Eliopolous has an average heater(high 80's) but a good changeup, the kid is still extremely young and can fill out that frame so he should be able to get that fastball upto 91-92.

Re: Draft pick deadline looms
Barnett is a huge (6'4", 230 lbs) high school kid with a low-90s sinking fastball that could end up 93-95, a nice curveball and the potential to develop a solid change as a third pitch. He also has good control for his age, and has a decent shot at being the best player the Jays get out of this draft.
Marisnick will be feast or famine...he's tall and toolsy, with good speed, a huge arm, and terrific overall athleticism, but there are concerns that he won't be able to hit as a pro (see: Eiland, Eric; Brisker, Markus; Wilson, Kenny). Basically, if he goes to Oregon, he'll probably either end up as a high 1st rounder in three years or largely off the radar.
Hobson is a big left-handed kid drafted as an outfielder, but who probably projects as a first baseman. He received a fair amount of attention as a high school junior (both pitching and hitting), but fell off the map a touch in his senior year for reasons I haven't been able to tease out. Still, he's apparently a pretty solid athlete (though a touch slow), and we can always use more guys with good power profiles.

Re: Draft pick deadline looms
The rookie system is another one of the things I hate about baseball. The Nationals suck hard and deservingly get Strasburg to give their franchise life, and they can't sign him, or are forced to give him a Dice-K like signing package. **** that. What a broken league

I'm a sucker for "tools" guys so I hope he gets signed. Other than that, I know nothing about him other than he has a Twitter account (http://twitter.com/jakemarisnick)

Re: Draft pick deadline looms
Daniel Webb was a top HS pitcher in last year's draft who fell due to signability concerns, he ended up getting drafted in the 12th round by the Dismondbacks but didn't sign. He ended up not qualifying for Kentucky and ended up in JUCO in Florida. He had a pretty rough year but he's got a heck of an arm.

Re: Draft pick deadline looms
We'll see now if signing Webb was done because we aren't going to sign one of the 3rd round picks. Both Barrett and Marisnick are going to be looking for something around $700-800k.

Could be, and with the Hobson signing that seems more likely. Of course, because MLB forbids teams from releasing above-slot bonus details prior to the deadline to prevent them from affecting other negotiations (and as a roundabout way of punishing them by preventing the player from getting an earlier jump on the year), it's also possible that these bonuses were set some time ago. This could be a fun afternoon...I'm not expecting them to get everyone under contract, but what a coup that would be.

Re: Draft pick deadline looms
Keith Law stated this morning that the Jays are apparently likely to sign Marisnick, but Eliopoulos(sp) was likely headed to Long Beach State or JUCO.
Of course, I usually like to think that Law has no idea what he's talking about. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me considering that I believed Eliop would be the easiest signing out of all the HS kids we took. I cant see how/why he'd be asking for a ridiculous bonus, and I doubt that us going slightly over slot if we had to would be the breaking-point.

No kidding, that would floor me (though it's not necessarily the worst combo of players to end up with). Especially as there were quotes in the media from him and his father saying "I gave them my number and I stuck to it" or something to that effect a couple days after the draft. I'll see if I can chase down the article that mentioned it.
Edit: just realized that I might have confused my Jakes...it might've been Marisnick that made that comment.

The Padres got a pretty good deal on Everett Williams...$775k against a $684k slot. Sign-up for volunteers for the MetA4 suicide watch begins shortly.

The recommended slot was 309,600 so 1 million is quite a lot. This is a big screw you from the Jays to the league office. I love it, let's get ALL these guys signed.
