Amir Johnson's reported height

Post#1 » by NORTH2SOUTH » Mon Aug 17, 2009 8:19 pm

This seals the deal for me. He is definately a legit 6'10. He towers over Jackie Chan as you can see. Leaves no question in my mind how tall he is.

John Hollinger claims he's closer to 6-11 or 7-0.

2007-08 season: Remind me again why this guy didn't play more? Johnson shot 55.8 percent, had the second-best rate of blocks in basketball, ranked in the top third of centers in rebound rate, and lost his minutes in the postseason to Theo Ratliff. Really.

Sure, he's a bit raw. Johnson was mistake-prone, with 10 offensive fouls and six illegal defense violations in just 769 minutes, and he wasn't always in the right spots on D. But he was also devastatingly effective, ranking 14th among centers in PER. There is absolutely nothing in his track record to suggest this was a fluke either -- his numbers from his previous two D-League seasons and his scraps of NBA time have all been outstanding.

Scouting report: Johnson is listed at 6-9 because that was his height when he turned pro out of high school, but he now appears to be 6-11 or even seven feet. He has a thin frame and still needs to add muscle, and he has no perimeter game to speak of -- last year he was 5-for-26 on shots outside the immediate basket area.

However, he's a freak of an athlete. Johnson has made at least one crowd-wowing play every time I've seen him perform, whether it be a flying swat or a soaring follow dunk, and despite his slender frame he's a superb rebounder. Right now his biggest issue is his propensity for turnovers, but otherwise he appears to be one of the game's top big man prospects, a Marcus Camby in the making.

2008-09 outlook: Johnson unquestionably needs to play more, but it's hard to see how he'll crack a rotation that includes Antonio McDyess, Rasheed Wallace, Jason Maxiell, and Kwame Brown. OK, scratch that last part, but the first three guys will be difficult to displace. Somehow, the Pistons need to get this kid (he's still only 21) at least 20 minutes a night to let him develop, because game experience is probably his biggest need and he's shown he can run with the big boys.

so far i have gotten

6-9
6-10
6-11

he was really young (18) when he came to the league (at that time he was probably 6-9) he probably grew 1 or 2 inches.

Why not just take the average out of the three heights?

He's still growing!

I like how you used Jackie Chan as the ultimate size reference.

The kids in the back have to be a legit 6'10 at least. I'm convinced of it.

This is from last season:

II don't know what mbah a moute's listed height is, but I'm guessing it's 6'7" or 6'8" from what I remember. To me they are very similar in height. If you look shoulder to hip or shoulder to knee. AJ might have an iinch on him, but unless moute is actually 6'10", maybe even 6'9" I can't see how Amir Johnson is 6'11". It does look like he's got pretty long arms though. That should make Jay Bilas happy. xD

http://www.nba.com/pistons/news/jobtraining_070108.html says "Johnson, who has grown to 6-foot-11 after being 6-9 when drafted by the Pistons with the 56th pick of the 2005 draft, averaged 17.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots in a 17-game stint with Fayetteville (N.C.) in last season’s D-League stint." So I think it is safe to say he is a PF who could possibly be a PF/C tweener if he puts on more weight.

He will never be able to play Center. He came into the league as a 3 with a face up game. He sprouted 3 inches and pistons tried to get him to play more like a traditional 4.

He is similiar to a Josh Smith W/O the extreme athleticism and not as polished Offensivley.

In HS @ the 17 yrs of age he measured in @ 6'9 w/shoes, 8'9 standing reach and 6'11.5 wingspan, in all probability he could have grown by then.

He may not be a center offensively but he has good athleticism, shot blocking and if he puts on weight for post defence it could be possible.

Amir's face up game is somewhat effective according to a few Pistons fan. Perhaps Amir would be more effective offensively if the Pistons weren't trying to mold him into playing behind the basket because that just isn't his strength. And the way Triano coaches is excellent because he allows his players to play more freely where we can utilize their strengths to our benefits oppose to changing them to something else that they're no good at.
Basketball is like poetry in motion, cross the guy to the left, take him back to the right, he's fallin back, then just J right in his face. Then you look at him and say, "What?" - Jesus Shuttlesworth

There is so much attention paid to a players height, and I don't understand it. Look at CB4, he is 6'11 but his neck is longer than what might be deemed "normal". To me the more important numbers are how high are their shoulders from the ground, and reach. I find it surprising that only certain websites focus on that kind of information.

I watched him a bunch of times in Vegas this summer. In a summer league full of undersized bigs, he is legit 6'10" for sure. He also showed that he's a great athlete who scores around the bucket and doesn't take bad shots, but doesn't have much of an offensive game outside the paint and is turnover-prone.
