IMO if he cared much about winning, we'd be hearing comments from him that he'll do whatever role the team needs him to do, that he's looking for the team that will give him the best chance to win a championship, that practice is important because you help develop your teammates, that defense wins championships, etc.. I don't disagree that he needs the ball in his hands to be effective, but that same 1 ball that is there for the starters is also used for the 2'nd unit, and given that the opposition second unit is likely not as effective offensively or defensively then at this point in his career that could really work for him.
If the dude would at least say something, even if he was lying through his teeth, that he was looking for a team that could help him win a championship, then I'd feel a bit different.
What team? He doesn't have a team. Ask yourself this do you think next season Ray Allen is going to be looking for whatever role some contender wants him to fill? I am sure Ray is going to be as thrilled as Rip Hamilton, Grant HIll and Iverson are about coming off the bench.
The "second unit" concept is overrated, it isn't lines like hockey even with Doc. Iverson would have to fit into significantly more roles coming off the bench depending on who he subs for especially since he isn't a pure 1 or 2. In reality Boston, because of its effort to fit Eddie House into its rotation would be one of the places Iverson would fit in off the bench but most places it will be a struggle.
The other issue is that not everyone can succeed coming off the bench, Iverson is a volume shooter, it doesn't make him a bad shooter but he needs to put up shots to be successful, when you play 36 mins and start 0-5 it isn't a big deal in 20 mpg it is deadly. We have already seen former stars fail in this role in Boston.
I really don't have a problem with AI hanging it up or going overseas instead of doing the GP in Miami thing. If that is how he was to win a title it means nothing to his career, it would just be personal satisfaction and it just doesn't drive him.
