OT: PS3 now $299...

Post#1 » by jove9 » Tue Aug 18, 2009 10:28 pm

...but you might be able to get it for $199 with a playstation credit card (unless they pull the offer).

I don't know if any of you are interested, but FYI.

EDIT: Here's PC World's chart comparing the PS3 Slim with all the X360 models so that you can compare similar builds.

I bought a laptop-wii combo from best buy last week and haven't opened the wii yet, and I already have a 360 that I don't play. Do I need a PS3???

Only if you want a cheap-ish bluray player and you didn't get one in that fancy laptop.

Most people aren't eager to jump on the bluray wagon yet, though. In fact, I cancelled my bluray option on netflix because the price went up $5 a month. DVD is good enough for me... for now.

One of the things I use my xbox for the most is streaming movies. Does the PS3 do that? I don't know if I'll need a big hard drive since I won't pay to download movies or music in digital form.

from a ps3 owner
i think you can do that with a ps3 but i never use it
playstation network also got movies up for rent and sale
but the price is ridiculous
almost as bad as amazon

need for bigger hard drive
because you can transfer the file to the ps3 and watch it
then that would defeat the purpose of streaming through ps3
ps3 support divx

my pc is my media center
no need to use ps3 to connect to my pc for streaming
since everything is in my bedroom
i'm just using a 15ft long dvi-hdmi cable
everything is good
only thing i need is a blu-ray rom and a software to rip blu-ray movies
those trailers are annoying for disney movies
i love warners just a warning screen for 5-10 sec then go straight to the movie

ps3 as blu-ray player
there's no such thing as the perfect blu-ray player
there's always something that certain blu-ray player can't do
(don't argue this with me it's part of my job)
ps3 is the best you can get
it's the fastest for sure
only downside is you can't output bitstream for hd audio
if you don't know what that mean basically you don't need it
oh and the other downside which is the same for most top brand players
you can't play burned blu-ray disc
at least better than the LG (can't even play DVD - the problem might be corrected with the latest firmware i didn't bother trying)

ps

if you don't understand what i'm saying
then put me on your ignore list
well you probably wont understand me to do that

Yes, and no. Currently it does not stream directly from Netflix, if that's what you're looking for. However, with PlayOn Media Server you can get the same effect. You can download it and test it out for free for a little over a week. After that, you'll need a license.

http://www.themediamall.com/playon

I've been using it since last october to stream Netflix and Hulu, and I've been more than happy with it. Well worth the purchase, IMO. The quality of the video depends on your internet connection and your PC's processing power. There are ongoing rumors, however, that Netflix will jump directly to the PS3 in the future.

Sorry, moofs, I was too eager to post this. I didn't want to dig through the million page archive for the game thread. Maybe a sympathetic mod will combine the threads?

I just bookmarked it (using realgm bookmarks) since it always falls off the first page unless one of us or max posts.

Go figure, all the gamers that posted in the old version of the thread got waived :)

Btw, while 360 is a large hunk of shite (I'm on my third RROD, and my boss, I found today, is on his sixth and keeps a spare for when the active one red-rings), it also integrates with Windows 7 in manners most fantabluriasmical (nod to Raoul).

Got to see Windows 7 firsthand today. Get it the very first second you can.

Transferring the file to the PS3 sounds good. I like what my 360 does streaming-wise, but it does take up some bandwith.

As far as burned blu-rays, I've noticed with DVD players that cheap, simple design players play burned DVDs a lot better than high end DVD players. I assume the same will be true for blu-ray in a few years.

Kinda reminds me of the PS2. It was my first DVD player in a time when DVDs were expensive and DVD Players went for $300.

I had mine for 2 years before it got the RROD. Ironically, it got them when I put a PS2 I was fixing on top of it. I find that as long as the fan's unobstructed, it'll be fine. I keep my 360 on top of my desk, so it has a very small chance of overheating.

Actually, the Xbox can stream video files straight from any computer connected to the router/network the Xbox is connected to. You can just rip your DVDs to your computer and never need to take them out of the box again.

Oh. Then as Max mentioned, you can stream stuff from your PC directly to PS3 pretty easily. I listen to music from my computer on my PS3 every now and then. I don't have any movies saved on my pc though, so I can't comment on that.

I got my PS3 for $150.00 Australian. so that'd be what, $120-$130 US?

I am torn between my PC, (COD4) and the PS3 (GTA IV) My PS3 isn't compatable with the PS2 however, (which sucks) make sure you are getting the latest release model, and not an older one, if this is a problem.

PC just seems better to me, (And I have been a console head since paddle tennis and intellivision!) I dunno, you make the call.

use ps3 for streaming...
you need to turn on - ps3, tv, pc

use pc for streaming...
you need to turn on - tv, pc

why bother wasting more energy and money for ps3? if you don't play game or watch blu-ray movies
all you need for the pc to connect to your tv is a decent video card with dvi output
almost every video card has it now (you can get one for about $50)
you probably need a long dvi-to-hdmi cable (more than 10 ft long)

if you don't have a hdtv
don't even bother getting a ps3

My laptop isn't very good, it's a mid-level Acer. I actually don't know what a dvi output is, to be honest. There's an output I don't know, but all it says is "1394."

Otherwise, I do plan on using Blu-Ray, as well as getting a game or two. With a price drop, I can get a used PS3 under $200 with a hard drive.

Edit: the following manual says I have a VGA.

typical hdtv out there all got a pc input (vga input) for pc and laptop
1394 is the firewire -- faster than usb but not as common as usb, most device don't use it

before upgrading to the high def (ps3 and blu-ray stuff)
get yourself the hdtv first
there's no advantage of using blu-ray instead of dvd if you don't have one
