Bob McGinn suggests idea of trading for Michael Turner
As usual McGinn wrote a great column this morning for MJS. Statistically broke down how awful the Packers are on one-yard short yardage situations on 3rd and 4th down. They'd historically be at the bottom with their terrible conversion rate and most likely dead ducks in the playoffs.
Feels it's a function of two things:
a) The zone blocking scheme relies more on guys cut blocking and gimmicks than power football. But you need power lineman on the short-yardage situations.
b) Packers have no running back on their team greater than 215 pounds, except for Wynn, but McGinn feels he runs too upright to be a short-yardage back.
At the end of the article, he muses about whether San Diego would now make the move of trading Turner to us before the Oct. 16th trade deadline for a second round pick. Feels Turner at 237 pounds is the best back that TT could go for. Believes that San Diego's season may be over shortly and maybe they'd go for it since they will lose Turner at year end anyways......

stop speculating
these threads saying that Green Bay needs to trade for a back need to stop. As a fan you have to realize that we do have talented backs that can put up solid numbers, its just that what is to blame is the run blocking. The run blocking will eventually develop and there will be no need to waste a draft pick in a trade.

Oh you think so huh. How did Ahman Green average 4 yards a carry last year behind this line in their first year in the scheme but none of our current guys who have had a decent amount of carries can do it even though the line should have more experiance now? Lets face it, Ahman was very good in his time but was on the decline and none of our current backs are even near his current level of talent.
Turner>>>>>>>>>than all of our running backs
I would like to see Grant and Morency get most of the carries tonight to see what they can do and if they don't show the ability to consistently find holes, make the trade.

Given that we sign our guys to early extensions all the time, I'm guessing there is nothing in the CBA like basketball that would prevent this. I agree on signing the extension, but we would then be doubling down with Turner, because we'd be giving up a high pick and a healthy contract as well.
I'd maybe do it, but would want to have all my football people tell me they think Turner is a talent that is being held back and not a guy who is a product of having LT softening up the defense for him.

in sports there is a thing called injuries and as a result of these injuries players miss games, Jackson is going to miss his second game tonight because of the shin injury. Morency missed the first few games of the season because of injury. And can you actually make a point that Turner is better than all of our RB's? By the time Turner gets in the game the defense is worn down by LT which allows Turner to put up big numbers on defenses that are fatigued because of LT wearing them down. I am not too sure Turner would be a solid option as a full time starter. And in regards to our run blocking it is obviously not as good as it was last year, give it time to develop and all of you who are whining that we need to waste a draft pick on a back up will realize that the running back by commitee will work just fine and that we will not have to waste a draft pick.

Thats all I have to say. If you can go here and tell me we don't need help, then I want what you are smoking. Now I know you might say, we have run it less the almost all teams which is true. But look at our average yards per carry. We are in a league of our own. We suck bad and the RB's have to take some of the blame.

sure we have a low ypc average, but we dont run the ball much either. The ypc average is also a reflection of the offensive line and the lack of holes they are opening. If we can run the ball more than 13 times a game than i am pretty sure the average would be higher. Just give it time to develop instead of panicking and wasting a high draft pick on a back who is a product of LT wearing down and fatiguing the defense.

San Diego wanted a 1st and 3rd for him last offseaon, something they knew they weren't going to get. My guess is they thought they would have another 13-14 win team and Turner would be a key ingrediant on that offense.
Last year through 4 games Turner had 41 carrries for 276 yards on 6.75 ypc.
Through 4 games this year he has 17 carries for 54 yards on 3.2 ypc.
They're not blowing teams out anymore. LT is struggling for every yard he gets and if anything they need to feed him the ball more.
I think Turner is gone at the end of the year unless they want to pay him Ladell Betts type money, though I think Turner could get more.
The Packers will have a lot of money to spend. I'm not sure I'd deal a 2nd round pick when we could just sign him next spring.

I wouldn't necessarily go after the guy in the offseason......
I think McGinn's point was this season presents a unique opportunity and the team should go for it and get a RB for right now. We could use some of that $13mm in cap room to frontload a contract extension for him so that it wouldn't affect the cap much next year.

It's a good idea to look into it...
I'd rather try to get Derrick Ward from the Giant since they already have Jacobs and Droughns. Ward would fit the Packers perfectly, he isn't a great rusher but he gets the job done and grinds out yards, not to mention he is a great receiver out of the back field and an excellent blocker. Would fit in PERFECTLY with the Packers, IMO.

Odds are Turner will be a hot commodity in free agency and will get a sizable offer early on,one of those situations where a team has to strike quick and make a big offer right off the bat.
Now i have no idea if Thompson will even be interested in Turner this offseason, but Ted doesn't strike me as the type to be aggressive early on in free agency. He seems more a wait things out and only pay a guy on his terms, not one to throw out a big early offer to be sure he gets his man.
His first year he signed nobody of of value. The signing of Manuel was pocket change money. When he got Pickett,it wasn't really early on and he wasn't a huge in demand player.Woodson got a big contract, but it was at the end of free agency.
