Let's say that there is a team with a player making $10m and another team with a player making $15m. Can these two teams make a trade without including another player (both teams are over the cap)? I know teams can include up to $3m in a trade, but what I don't know is if that money can cover the difference in the salaries.
I have read that a player can be traded for up to 125% of their contract + $125 000. So in the example above, the $10m player can be traded for a player making $12.65.
Phrased differently, is the money that can be included just sweetener or a necessary component when salaries do not match?
Thank you to anybody who can answer this question.

the money is a sweetener like a 1st/2nd round draft pick and is not included in salary matching
