MIN / HOU / some third guy

Post#1 » by shrink » Tue Aug 18, 2009 9:19 pm

I posted this deal to get HOU under the lux over on their board, and since I'm lazy, I'll just quote it.

For MIN, we serve as a financial bridge again. In this one, we pay $6 mil up front to get the $4.8 mil cap space moving Songalia. Maybe we get some minor incentive as well -- HOU doesn't need it all here.

shrink wrote:Since my last financial offer didn't meet with ridicule and mockery, let me offer another idea. I know Battier carries some interest from likely contenders, but they often can't get you the savings to get under the lux, which would be a big financial savings to you. MIN has some pieces to do that, but has no need for a win-now Battier. I'm curious what your best offers for Battier are, and if MIN can make the pieces fit better

HOU OUT: Battier + Cook + Barry ($12.5)
HOU IN: $2 mil young star prospect + Atkins + Songalia

MIN OUT: Atkins + Songalia
MIN IN: Cook + Brent Barry + $4 mil unproductive expiring (buy them all out)

THIRD TEAM OUT: $2 mil young star prospect + $4 mil unproductive expiring
THIRD TEAM IN: Battier

simultaneous

HOU OUT: Dorsey
HOU IN: MIN TPE

MIN OUT: MIN TPE
MIN IN: Dorsey

WHY FOR HOU: Prospect + savings.

$2.50 mil savings from trade 1
$2.72 mil savings from releasing Atkins for his partial guaranteed, $0.72
$0.88 mil savings getting a TPE for Dorsey
----------------------
$6.1 mil savings total

$4.7 mil savings in lux penalties
$2.8 mil estimated savings from return of lux share
-------------------------
$13.6 MIL TOTAL SAVINGS

This adds $4.8 mil in salary in 2010, when you might have free agent plans, but getting $13 mil up front and a decent prospect seems to be worth it. Deal with the expiring later.

WHY FOR MIN: Pay $3.5 mil cash now to get $4.8 mil cap space later.

WHY FOR THIRD TEAM: They trade a future prospect and an unproductive expiring to win now.

So I assume the key is to find the third team ... the Battier suitor who is win-now, and carries a good prospect and an unproductive expiring.

BOS: Scalabrine + Tony Allen + JR Gidden or Bill Walker.
CHI: Jerome James + James Johnson
LAL: Morrison + Farmar + pick
NOH: Antonio Daniels + Julian Wright?
POR: I seem to recall many offers from the trade board .. most would work.
SAS: Bonner + Finley + George Hill?
UTA: Matt Harping + Ronnie Price or Koufos
WAS: Mike James + Nick Young?

So who's been knocking on your door for Battier?

I've wanted Battier in Portland for a long time now.

Outlaw and Batum do it for you?

GopherIt, I actually think Batum/Outlaw for Battier is a downgrade for them.

I wouldn't do this if I'm Portland. I could care less about helping Portland. If we got enough to help them- more power to em'.

I've heard Outlaw + Bayless being discussed a few times from POR. This is how it'd fly:

HOU OUT: Battier + Cook + Brent Barry ($12.42)
HOU IN: Bayless + Atkins + Songalia ($10.15)

MIN OUT: Atkins + Songalia ($8.006)
MIN IN: Cook + Brent Barry + Outlaw ($9.162)

POR OUT: Bayless + Outlaw (5.743)
POR IN: Battier (6.864)

(I'll leave Dorsey out .. one HOU fan says they want to keep him)

HOU saves $2.3 in the deal, plus $2.7 for waiving Atkins for a total of $5 mil. They are $4.7 mil over the lux, and this retains their lux share (let's guess its $2.8). TOTAL SAVINGS IN 2009: $12.5 mil
This easily pays for Songalia next year, and they get a decent prospect in Bayless.

MIN does fine. They pay $1.16 mil + $2.72 from Atkins, but for $3.88 mil they get out of Songalia's second year ($4.8), and they get a look at the useful Outlaw.

POR gets Battier to win now, at an acceptable price.

I don't see us doing a deal that nets Portland Shane Battier. Especially not with us getting Outlaw when we already have Gomes and Brewer at that postion and we take on more money this year, when Songalia will be a semi-valuable expiring next year. If we make a deal like this, personally i want someone who can start at the 2guard where we have some question who will play the most minutes. Throw in Blount and get us Tmac instead, i'd take a flier on him as a huge expiring.
