Amare says 50-50 he'll be around in a year

Post#1 » by Mr. Sun » Wed Aug 19, 2009 9:24 pm

Stoudemire now expects to play in Phoenix this season but lists his odds of remaining with the franchise a year from now at “50-50.” If he declines his $17.6 million player option for the 2010-11 season, he’ll become a free agent in July. So far, the Suns don’t appear committed to rewarding him with the type of maximum extension he’d seek on the open market.

“I was really looking forward to my entire career being in [Arizona],” Stoudemire said. “It kind of put a hold on a few of my decision-making things. … I don’t know if I’m sure if I want to play one more year here, or be gone, or sign an extension and play here for another six years or so.

“If they are loyal to me, I’m loyal to them. I’m a loyal person and always have been. My word is bond. I’d love to stay; the Suns have been phenomenal so far. But anything can change.”

If they do trade him hopefully they get something good in return anyway...

“Right now, we got some young guys that we have to mold to become successful players in the league,” Stoudemire said. “They need constant leadership from myself, Steve and Grant Hill, and we will work to do that

Sure hope he isn't showing the youngsters how to box out.

Imagine if he walks next year without resigning and we get nothing in return, that GS deal would've been looking better

Amare has already proven he deserves a max contract. Consider the following:

- He's only 26 years old

- Great work-ethic

- Averaged 37 PPG against Duncan in the 2005 conference finals.

- All-NBA 1st Team in 2007

- Averaged 28/10 during second half of 2007/2008 season.

- Best scoring big-man in the NBA

he might deserve it from things he's done in the past. but no team will give it to him right now without knowing his situation coming back from surgery. i think more teams would also be willing to give him a max contract if he played both sides of the court just as intensely.

He should get a max contract but unfortunately I doubt Sarver would give it to him. He's paying Nash and Hill like 14M and he doesn't want to sign a top 10 player in the NBA for only 6M more?

He is not going to walk away from $17+ mil. That would be stupid in the state that the NBA is in, and his agent won't let him do it. He is still in a great situation, where he has an awesome pg, who only makes him look better. Well, on the offensive end.

Granted Amare is only 26, but he has had some major issues with injuries, that could easily come up again. Am I the only one who remembers what happened right after we signed him to that huge contract? Well obviously the Suns remember. All of a sudden he gets some stiffness in his knee, and then he is out for the year. A year in which we played better defensively until KT went down.

Amare is a very good offensive player, but in this economy, the only team that would throw a max contract at him would be Cuban, and he just locked up some cash this year. I highly doubt we will just let him walk, but I would rather that, then to give him a max, and then watch him sit out the year with another knee surgery or eye repair. Suns are being smart with this one.

On the other side, Amare is being stupid, yet again, by talking about this to the media. Man this boy does not learn. :banghead:

No one will give a PF who doesnt play defense on two surgically repaired knees a max extension in the tightest budgeted season in the last decade.

If you disagree you havent been paying attention.

Maybe this will be a down year for Amare coming off the injuries and we can sign him for cheap :)

It's def not out of the realms of possibility let me tell ya. Need I remind you how much Orlando are paying Lewis?

I think what happens with someone like Boozer could be a determing factor.

Have to agree with most tho. Much like with Marion, talk is cheap and you have to really think whether they would def be getting more money elsewhere. If they pretty much aren't guaranteed of that (and we're talking about a lot of money here) they are always going to take the player option.

I expect Amare to do the same unless he pulls out some unbelievable numbers.

I agree, I don't see him opting out to get less from another team. Meaning, I don't see anyone being able to give him $18+ mil next year. Marion knew that, but used the same scare tactic. The problem with Amare, he is too dumb to realize the situation.

Why make this threat now? We all know the Suns are waiting for his return to form before that start contract talks. Why in all that is holy does he think 300 letters from kids will change that thought process?

By the way, does anyone know which team could offer Amare $20 mil next year that will be a good team before he even gets there? I just don't understand this kid.

Clippers, Nets, Cavs (if Lebron opts out), Knicks, Heat (if DWade opts out). There's a lot of teams actually, but not a lot of good teams.

I really don't see the Clips going for Amare with Griff just getting started. I could see the Nets going for him, but that team isn't doing any more than we are. Plus they are still talking about arena changes and moves. I don't see them spending max money on Amare.

I don't see the Cavs letting LeBron leave, let alone subbing Amare for LeBron contract wise.

I could see the Knicks as the only team that would go for it and be a place where Amare could be in the limelight enough where he might take less. The problem with that, is he ripped Mike right after he left, and we all know how Mike is with trust issues.

It would have to be a team with a young and upcoming pg that can make Amare look great.
