As the steroid saga unfolds, one by one big name over the last dozen years has leaked out. Yet, one name continues to stand for the one unofficial stat for Baseball's model: consistency. I can't help but think that Jeter has been screwed out of consideration over the last dozen years just because he has 4 rings right off the bat. But let's consider the following:
How many Yanks on the 4 WS are HOF bound locks?
Mariano Rivera? Yes.
Paul O'Neill and Tino Martinez? No
Jorge Posada? Maybe but not a first ballot (but deserves to)
Andy Pettitte? Maybe...don't know with the steroid issue
David Cone? Maybe but still not a lock or first ballot.
Derek Jeter is a lock for the Hall of Fame first ballot. He's the ideal ball player and he's putting up some solid numbers. Maybe his best season in quite some time.
I think he should get his first MVP. Sure, the Yanks have the stars but he's the guy who has been steady at the stick all this time.
My question in all this is: Why did it take the sports writers so long to appreciate him? And what does that say about last season's most overrated vote by the players? No one is laughing now the roids era has touched EVERY one.

You're saying he's hitting 330 because hw wants a big contract next season? When was the last time Jeter didn't give it his all??

I think its just that he is healthy. Last year his quad held him back for 2-3 weeks and then his wrist for another month if not more, and he still hit .300 and had an all around good season. Now, no nagging injuries and he is hitting .330 again.

Re: Derek Jeter MVP might be like Sean Connery's Oscar
Jeter's two best MVP opportunities have come and gone. His career year was in '99, when there were many great campaigns put forward (I think I would've given it to Jeter over Pudge, but then there was also Nomar and Pedro and a monster year from Manny to consider). '06 was the other year Jeter had a good case, but the media had to do itself in with hype and pick Morneau over the 10-15 guys that deserved it more.
That's not to say Jeter isn't having a great season--I especially like the rebound his defense has made. But Joe Mauer should rightfully be running away with the voting if he stays on this track.

No question Joe Mauer is a great player. However Mauer, Morneau, and Kubel are the Most Valuable sub .500 candidates.
In this man's opinion, the MVP should go to someone who has been consistent on such a high level that the team is legitimately playoff bound.

Single players can't carry a team into the playoffs, though. Why should Jeter get extra credit for having a superior supporting cast?
Mauer may be on his way to the best catcher season ever. It's a shame the media stopped paying attention to him when he was "slumping" mid-season.

And that's my point. IF you crucify Jeter for having A-Rod, Tex, Damon...then defenders of the Twins being sisters of the poor should get off that soapbox.
The media treats Mauer like Brett Favre, begging the Twins make the playoffs so they can gush more. Too bad their owner is a billionaire who asks for welfare from the local gov't for tax breaks.

Wait, wait.
Lemme get this right. You're making the following claims:
-Joe Mauer, an outstanding catcher for a small market team who may end up being the greatest catcher of all-time, gets as much media coverage as Brett Favre, who was very good at one point but regardless is arguably the most overhyped athlete of all time.
-By extension, you think Derek Jeter isn't getting enough credit because of that given to Mauer, even though Jeter is another very good player also in the running for most overhyped athlete of all time.
Come on, man. Favre gets a story if the media sees him licking an envelope. Jeter would still get big coverage if he got traded to the Royals tomorrow. Mauer isn't close to either of them in attention. He'll deserve every MVP vote he gets, and then some.

^^My thoughts exactly.. I love Jeter and would like to see him win MVP someday but Mauer is having one of the best if not the best season for a catcher ever.. He deserves it..

Whether it's Yogi Berra or Joe Mauer, catchers always get the cry me a river MVP award...
TRUST ME when I say, IF I will call an athlete overrated instead of dancing around the subject. No, Joe Mauer is not overrated. He's just like the farce Brett Favre. A beloved athlete who is considered above every one else until they find out like every athlete has his flaws.
Joe Mauer is the 2003 A-rod MVP award candidate. That is, the sympathy MVP on a very average team IF you call having a former MVP in Justin Morneau and one of the more talented young outfielders in the league...average.
Let's get away from "small" market. That's the biggest bull title when you consider the Vikings aren't considered small market NFL team. I love how these names get flip flopped per sport. I mean, no one considers the Red Wings a small market team despite Detroit's declining population.
The truth is Minnesota is a considerable market. The Twins are owned by the richest man in baseball (yes, richer than the Yankees). Yet, no one supports them because during these economic times he quibbled over raising their taxes over dipping into his pocket for a few million.
Back on the injury prone Mauer. He doesn't even lead the Twins in HRs, RBIs, or runs scored. Morneau does. So why should he be the overwhelming MVP choice? If you want a feel good story pick someone on the Rangers.
I just don't see it especially since the AL Central isn't half as tough as the AL East.
