TJ Ford, to move or not to move.

Post#1 » by Gremz » Sat Aug 22, 2009 5:54 am

Pretty weak thread, but I might just start a few to get some action going.

How many of you would prefer him to stay or go. Feel free to voice your preferred opinion of what you'd want to see in is place if he were to be moved (hope this is ok Mods).

Perhaps the biggest problem would be the value that TJ would have right now. It's a bad market for anyone who isn't classified as a star yet extends beyond the 2010 Free Agency deadline, so I assume that unless someone actually come calling for him that we'll probably get 90c on the dollar for him.

I guess I have a fear that some inefficient play could have a long term effect on the Rooks here, I could just be living a paranoid fantasy though.

I for one wouldn't mind seeing him dealt. It's not that I have a specific problem with him, I guess it's just my stance on what I'd specifically like from a PG. As voiced before, I would seriously entertain a deal where TJ and Hinrich were the main pieces (granted fillers would be required). Granted he extends beyond our 2011 plans, but I think the range and defense he can bring would compliment this team incredibly well.

I'd like to see TJ dealt as well. His play is just too erratic for me. His decision making is below average and for a point guard that's very important. Hinrich is a good idea and I think he'd fit in well here, but I'd also take a look at Raymond Felton.

The problem, like you mentioned, is that I don't see any value for him in the market. Without any possible deals out there, I see us just hanging on to him until his contract expires and hopefully by then we have our point guard of the future.

I do agree, but I guess there in could lie a bigger problem. His value is not exactly fantastic, but if he battles with injuries and inconsistency further, he could become much less valuable. It's true it would also work vice versa though, and if he can remain healthy then there could be some nice trade value to utilize.

Fire O'brien, and Ford will become the efficient pg he was before arriving. As we have all seen, he is an awful fit for O'brien's system.

A little confused here. The only thing that he has take a hit for would be his PER and ast numbers. His TS% numbers last year equaled his career high, and TOV% in per 36 minute terms was the lowest it has ever been. I'm not defending the guy, but I just don't think that he is a goof fit for this team rather than the coach.

I believe Ford will be a great fit in our system. He will be much more effective this year after having a year to adjust. I would vote for keeping him as there is no chance we get value for him this year.

I think the Pacers will wait until 2011 summer, when the team only have 5 players in the roster, and the first round pick next year, if we don't trade it.

By then, the Pacers will have plenty of salary space to sign some free agent. Talking about the point guard, Tony Parker will be the top 1, though I doubt the Spurs might sign him extention before season 2010-11.

Other than TP, the three first round in 2007 could be our choice.

Mike Conley Jr. is now the starting PG for the MEM. However, they signed Marcus Williams this summer, who can really be a competitor for the starting lineup.

Acie Law, who is now a warrior, but they've also got Monta Ellis, Stephen Curry, and a unrestrcit FA CJ Watson. I think he is pretty underestimated.

Javaris Crittenton, who is big and athletic, might get less playing time, since the Wizards get Foye. If they resign Foye next year, Crittenton has great chance to go next season.

I vote to keep TJ, he has a manageable contract and is an above average pointguard that shows flashes of brilliance. He is a great role model, great in the community and seems to have a good repour with his teammates. Unless something great comes along I dont see a whole lot of point in trading him, especially with JJ out of town.

Lets wait till 2011 and sign Rajan Rondo or draft a PG next year and let him develop.

I would love to keep TJ because I know what type of player he COULD be. I was thinking the other day though that what would happen if we traded TJ and Foster for Amare. Then found some way to sign Iverson.

PG: Iverson/Watson/Diener
SG: Rush/Jones
SF: Granger/Dunleavy
PF: Amare/Murph/Hansbrough
C: Hibbert/Foster

What do you think? Do we have at least a "small" chance of that happening?

The Suns would want much more than that for Amare

PS: you left Foster on our depth chart. He'd be traded if this scenario actually happened.

If I see one more post about us getting Iverson I may actually vomit.

I think he should move, because if he doesn't, his guy will just run around him and score, and we'll basically be playing 4 on 5 when he's on the floor...plus, if he's standing in the lane, we'll get 3 second calls all the time.
I have no idea what you're talking about, and clearly, neither do you.

No. Not at all. It's completely unrealistic, and the odds that might actually happen are about as good as Larry Bird suiting up for the Pacers and playing this season.

What's your view on Hinrich as a replacement Count, IF a reasonable deal could be made?

Ford might disappoint again, but at least he has upside. If we were to move him, we'd have to get a better option at the point. I'd probably go for Iverson. I'm not sure who you can realistically get in return who'd be better than Ford. I definitely don't want to turn the team over to any of the other PGs on the roster. That'd be suicide for the season. I'm not hot on any of them as backups, let alone as starters. As much as I have questions on Ford, I'm praying he's able to at least stay healthy if not totally breaking out.

I would prefer to see TJ gone because I think he hurts us sometimes with all his dribbling and one and one action. He needs to realize he should concentrate on making others better. However, we are not going to get fair value for him, and so he wont get traded this season. Plus Watson is no more than a backup PG, and Ford will probably have another good statistical year, Im just not sure how condusive TJ Ford, even when producing points and assists, is to winning. lets not forget he gets abused by bigger PG's.

Looking at the past teams to win the NBA titles and thier point guards - Fisher, Rondo, ok Tony Parker was good, but you dont necessarily need an all-star PG to win a title. just one who manages the game (not a lot of turnovers), plays D, and hits the occasional big shot. ok, i mean those teams did have 3 all-stars though, so that is something we need to work on, ha...

For this season, i'd say let's keep Ford and see how he will do being the sole starting pg.
I think he fits well in Obie's system and he's the kind of guy that could dictate the tempo of the game.
He can make everyone run, and his quickness could be a major weapon.
The only problem he has is that he needs to understand that he's no Allen Iverson and he needs to distribute the ball. If he can somehow top his assist average last season, and be more of a playmaker, i really do think he's a perfect fit for this beast we're making.

I really wouldn't be surprised if Earl Watson supplants him as the starter about mid-way through the season.
