Double Standard

Here's my issue.

Elliot Williams gets his transfer request from Duke to play for Memphis. As per rule, you would expect that Williams would have to sit out a season due to transfer from one D1 school to another, but still have his 3yrs of eligiblilty(sp). Instead of sitting out a season like any other transfer, Williams will immediately get to play for the Tigers in the upcoming season. Williams made an appeal to the NCAA committee to get the request. The transfer is the main reason to be closer to his mother who is unfortunately ill.

In comes this story from Fox 13 on former Uni of Miami WR Jermaine McKenzie, who wishes to play for the U of Mem to be closer to his family due to a family member's medical condition. When McKenzie made his appeal to the NCAA committee to approve his request, it was denied. So McKenzie will sit out this season and will have to wait out the 2010 season to reclaim his eligibility.

This is a case of talking out of both sides of the mouth. On one hand Williams gets his request to play this upcoming season b/c he plays bball for a program who until recently has endure its' share of popularity under former coach John Calipari. On the other hand, you have a former Miami WR player who wishes to play for the U of M immediately, but had his request denied (gave same reason as Williams).

I guess this is the case of money talks and how much pull you have on certain programs. In the case of the U of M, bball has more pull due to the success it has achieve until the NCAA took back the Final Four season in which involve Derrick Rose playing in the season. Whereas football is concern, it hasn't seen much success since DeAngelo Williams was around. If football had much pull and success as bball did the NCAA probably would've approve Jermaine McKenzie's request to play immediately this season. Sounds like to me a double standard is at work. You can't approval the request of one, but denied the request of another with the same reason. Goes to show that rules are meant to be bent or broken.

I'm not familiar with the particular's of McKenzie's situation. In regards to Williams, he's from Memphis, played HS B'ball in Memphis and it's his mother that is ill. It's rumored/reported that he also looked into UT and KY, but was cautioned that the NCAA was tightening it's reign on transfer waivers. Lastly, Duke was in step with the move all the way - golden boy K (who me - my players can be paid by AAU coaches but we're not penalized) goes a long was with the D-bags in Indianapolis.
