Stretch Provision

What does it mean when an NBA player has a "Stretch Provision" in his contract? Does it let the team delay compensation over time?

Thanks.

While we are on the topic of contract provisions, what is a "Love of the Game" provision?

From what google tells me, Jordan was the first player to get one. It sounds like it allows a player to play pickup basketball without risking loss of salary protection, but I couldn't find out anything very definite.

There is more on this in another recent thread, but you pretty much got it. Players aren't allowed participate in any sport with a 'reasonable probability of injury' (I'm not 100% on the wording) in the offseason. The love of the game provision makes an exception to that clause of the contract for the sport of basketball.

Paragraph 12 of the contract NBA players sign states "the Player agrees that he will not, without the written consent of the Team, engage in...any game or exhibition of basketball, football, baseball, hockey, lacrosse, or other team sport or competition [or various other dangerous activities]. If the Player violates this Paragraph 12, he shall be subject to discipline imposed by the Team and/or the Commissioner..."

However, the contract can be amended by "agreeing upon provisions... permitting the player to participate or engage in some or all of the activities otherwise prohibited by paragraph 12…" Any "public game or public exhibition of basketball," however, would still need to be approved in writing by the NBA.

If the contract is not amended and the player gets injured or dies as a result of such activity, he does not receive compensation protection if his contract is terminated.
