Dime: Who's Better: Baron David or Mike Bibby

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Wed Aug 26, 2009 5:41 am

In regards to Baron’s ability over Mike Bibby, it’s really not a contest. Davis is far superior and has been more consistent over the course of their respective careers in nearly every statistical category despite being on teams with far less talent. Even on his most inconsistent nights (which Baron has), he still puts up more points, gets more assists, more rebounds, draws more fouls, and is a constant threat to catch fire. The same cannot be said for Bibby who is, at best, a streaky shooter and questionable distributor.

Once again, I’ll go back to the analogy I used when we compared Nash and Kidd — if the players switched teams, how much better or worse would that team be? The Clippers, undeniably, would be a worse team with Mike Bibby at the helm with no true leader, scorer, or go-to player. The Hawks, on the other hand, would actually be more dangerous with an explosive player like Baron feeding the ball to Joe Johnson and Josh Smith throughout the game.

If you had to choose which player you’d want to build a team around, would anyone truly take Mike Bibby over Baron Davis? Even if it’s solely based on potential, Davis has to be the clear choice with the possible rewards far outweighing the risks. Bibby might be the more safe choice but this is in large part due to a lesser role that he’d have on the team.

Again, when Baron wants to be, he can be a very skilled leader of men and a key piece to the success of a team. Bibby, however, has always been (and always will be) just an OK point guard.

No hesitation at all - Baron takes this one. Link

I agree with most of this and I kinda agree with the vote of Davis because you can not deny the talent, potential, and stats of Davis when healthy....But then again, that's WHEN HEALTHY!!! And I think that they really disregarded the biggest key when comparing these 2 guys, and that is what good does talent/potential do for you team if it's not on the floor leading you club...

Davis has only played 1 season in the last 8 years where he played in more than 67 games and that was in 07-08 with GS...I mean how can you really choose a guy that has 7 out of 10 seasons where he played in less than 70 games...Davis' career stats are also not that much better than Bibby's as this article leads you to believe....Davis has career stats of 17ppg, 7.3 asst, and 2.79TOs, while shooting a subpar 32% 3PT - and - Bibby's career stats are 16.4ppg, 6.1asst, and 2.4TOs and shoot a way better 3PT @ 37%...

I think I'd take a healthier Bibby over a banged up Baron if I'm a GM...

Based on last year only: Bibby.
Based on potential for this year: Davis.

Davis has more talent at this stage, but the key for me is that when Davis is unhappy he can take your whole team down. Bibby needs to be happy as well, but at least he's not destroyed seasons because of a bad mood.

Baron's injury history cancels out any advantage he has on the court. I've always been pretty skeptical of Baron because he played every game in his 1st 3 years and gets a huge extension,proceeds to consistently miss 15-30 games a year for 5 years,and then somehow manages to play all 82 in a contract year. I don't see how anyone was dumb enough to give a guy with that track record a 5 year deal.

Bibby -> $6M
Baron -> $13M

Bibby and Baron's pay rate is fair based on talent (and ability to help a team win). i think Baron and Joe would be a great duo........ but if Baron was on the team, i don't think the Hawks could have resigned Marvin..... so you can look at it like this.... Baron or Bibby/Marvin

It must be boring around Dime lately. Otherwise I don't see any other reason why this article was written. I didn't know there was a debate over Bibby v Baron.
