Rubio signs with FC Barcelona

Post#1 » by Inc » Wed Aug 26, 2009 5:13 pm

Ricky Rubio, the 5th pick of the Minnesota Timberwolves in this year's draft, has agreed to terms on a contract with Regal Barcelona.

The Spanish team will pay a buyout of 3.7 million Euros, approximately $5.3 million, to Rubio's previous team, Joventut.

Rubio will sign a six-year agreement that contains an affordable buyout in 2011.

I believed that this is exactly what would of happened if we drafted him, so I think we made the right choice

It is not official yet. The Barça made an offer, Joventud has to officially accept it still. Though it seems that's what it is going to happen. If sacramento had drafted the result could have been the same, or not. The problem for Rubio to land in the NBA this season is his buyout. Being dratfed the 4th, and in a different market could have resulted in a different scenario. Wi will never know :-)

Yeah, I don't totally buy that the same thing would've happened here. Regardless, a small part of me thought that Rubio had been bluffing the whole time to try to get Minny to trade him. Guess not.

Yes, I admit it, I am not a sacramento fan. (Though I have followed the team quite a lot, among others). I also admit that my posts ON THIS BOARD are limited to Rubio. I also admit that I was not aware about the SECT rules and that I thought that I could talk about whatever I wanted and whenever I wanted as long as I RESPECTED other posters.

Back to the topic at hand. The Rubio signing isnt big news. Barcelona has been flirting with Rubio for the last month now so its not huge news. And even if the deal doesnt fall through DKV is always an option as well as FC Madrid and even dare say it, Minnestoa.

Draino, cut it out. If you're not contributing to the topic at hand, don't post.

Honestly if there were Kings news to talk about I would have locked this Rubio thread. I'm tired of the shoulda woulda coulda with the guy. He was only coming if he could get sponsorship money to pay for his buyout.

After all the dust settled I feel the Kings made a great choice.

With respect to everyone else on this board, I think this is Kings related. Petrie traveled to Europe and checked out Rubio. Then had Rubio come to Sacto so the whole Kings organization could check him out. How wise is that!

Then we all read and saw how Tyreke was tearing up all the other prospects in try outs. I mean Petrie gets on the floor with these guys and interacts with them. I was impressed when I realized what this process entailed!

What more could a GM do to insure the best player was chosen. I like Rubio, I really do. Even if we set the contract complications aside though, I give Tyreke the edge because he has a NBA body to go along with all the talent.

I think it relates to Kings. There is no way we could sit and wait for Rubes to come out 2 years from now.
Might it have been different if we drafted him, perhaps...but regardless, I think this validates our draft pick right now. With all of those questions marks surrounding him before he even took a step on a basketball court, I think we made the right call for sure.
Sometimes you just have to look yourself in the mirror and say....Tyreke Evans.
That just happened.

To be honest, I think we were the only team that had a shot to bring in Rubio. Considering everything, I know we did IMO.

But then again, Rubio could have stay out there for 2+ years and we get screwed. haha

No...that isn't an issue for the Kings to worry about. The Kings did their due dilligence and chose a different player. Once we chose Tyreke Evans Ricky Rubio's situation became non relevant to the Kings. Since we passed on him, and this potential drama, Rubio's contract situation is a moot point as far as the Kings are concerned as it will only affect us when we play Minnesota.

Really what keeps the Rubio talk alive is some of you are fans. He never played here. He's never been a King. He's never even played ball in the US. We considered drafting a lot of players and brought them in. They even had real workouts. We aren't still talking about them, right? We are talking about Ricky Rubio because some of you have man crushes on him. That's the only reason.
