Back-up QB

Post#1 » by Newz » Wed Aug 26, 2009 9:30 pm

Just read this on Wiretap:

ESPN - Roster cuts are coming in the NFL next week, which means that we should see can increase in trades.

Adam Schefter of ESPN wrote on Wednesday that Tyler Thigpen, Luke McCown and A.J. Feeley could be available on the trade market.

Teams must reduce their rosters to 75 players by Tuesday and 53 players by Sept. 5.

Any interest in any of those guys? I wouldn't mind trying to acquire Thigpen, he isn't very good (solid back-up, IMO), but he is better than what we have. I think if Rodgers got hurt he could hold us over for a while until Rodgers recovered.

I think we are screwed either way if Rodgers goes down, since we are a 10-11 win team WITH him healthy all year. If he goes down we are definitely not making the playoffs. I would honestly just hold onto Brohm and hope he gets better, at least through next training camp. If he's still doing this after two full years, then you can release him. I don't think they would keep 4 QB's either.

I really want to keep both Brohm and Flynn and I don't know if either would make it to the PS. Certainly not Brohm. If we could get Thigpen while stashing Flynn I'd do it.

I'd rather just keep Flynn as the backup and give Brohm one more year as the #3.

I'm reasonably OK with that, but my ideal option would be to have Brohm come down with a fake injury that allowed us to put him on the IR and then pick up a veteran backup if and only if the price was no more than say a 6th rounder.

That said, i don't watch practice everyday so i don't really know just how confident to feel about Flynn if he had to start 2-4 games.

As fr Brohm, i know many of you here still think he has an upside, but i don't. My money is on him being waived at some point in next years training camp. Hope i'm wrong.

I've always liked thigpen. Hes a slinger but he can make a lot of different throws.

More encouraging news from the Brohm front in practice today

It was painful to watch third-string QB Brian Brohm. He received all the repetitions with the No. 2s because backup Matt Flynn was out with a shoulder injury and he did nothing to take advantage of the opportunity. Whether he was playing with the No. 2 offense or serving as the scout team quarterback, he was off the mark all day. In all, he threw five interceptions and could have been intercepted at least two other times. It's not a heinous crime to throw an interception when playing for the scout team, but even in those situations the quarterbacks are encouraged to challenge the defense and play efficiently. It wasn't just the interceptions, either. In short yardage, he overthrew the 6-foot-6 Moore in the end zone twice, once missing a wide-open target in the middle of the field and the other time misfiring on a fade route into the corner. His performance was bad enough that coach Mike McCarthy made note of it in his post-practice news conference. "He's had some decisions I'm sure he wished he could have back," McCarthy said. "I think that's obvious as you watch practice, but these reps are so valuable for a young quarterback, and that's what he needs. He needs to go out there and have some success Friday (against Arizona)."

Based on what I've seen of him, I don't see Brohm helping us this year or any time in the future. I'm okay with Flynn, but would prefer Thigpen as a backup. I'm not sure what it would take to get him, but we all know the most likely scenario is that TT sticks with the guys he's drafted.

I think they'll give Brohm one more year to show something. There's really no point in cutting him now unless you have a significant upgrade at #2 QB available at a reasonable price. Personally, I don't know why the Chiefs wouldn't hold on to Thigpen considering how many sacks Cassell is sure to take this year.
