I imagine Ray getting a deal in the $13-15 million per range. I think it will get done as soon as possible. The Celtics aren't going to be FA players next summer no matter how you look at it. Ray will get his deal and then Rondo if he signs up for around $9-10 million. This team is going to try to maximize this core and Ray Allen is a key part of that core.
Most FA's just end up staying with their teams anyway as their present team has such a huge financial advantage. No one better than Ray is going to be available in a trade. People act like we're going to trade for Wade or something. Give it up, Ray will get extended..
Is Boston in a good position to extend Ray?

We will see what happens but I think you are being silly if you don't think Ray Allen is going to get an extension between $8-10 million per year. He is the starting SG on a championship contending team.
RA's production is likely to drop significantly over the next 3 years or so. I could see 8Mil for 3 years with a team option in the 3rd. I think if Rondo doesn't get an extension close to 10Mil per, he may wait til next summer for his money. I expect Rondo to end up with at least a $10Mil per deal. His numbers are gonna be very impressive.
Co-signed.
8-8.5 per seems like a good ballpark for Ray and that's extremely generous I think. I don't foresee a big market for 35 yr old shooting guards. I still see him being a pretty efficient scorer and he still keeps himself in excellent shape but I see his mpg decreasing along with his ability to effectively matchup against younger more athletic 2-guards on defense.
Out of respect for Ray and for his career you offer him this amount. He won't get as much anywhere else. I think if paul resigns too it has to be at a discount as well.

Neither of which he has shown in his Celtics career...

It's still 17 to 11!!!!

It doesn't matter what Ray is "worth". If we re-sign him, I hope it's a rather lucrative contract. I'm fine giving him $12-14M. It's not like we can give his money to anybody else. As long as management is still willing to pay Rondo & Perkins, they can give Ray as much as they want. The more they give Ray, the greater value he will have as a trade chip when his contract expires. Frankly, now is the time to move him with $19M coming off the books but I'm fine with doing it the next time around as well.

In a vacuum Ray may be worth about $10 million a year but this is a contending team and the cost is almost meaningless. Under the circumstances you're never going to get a replacement for him via trade or FA. We're going to have the MLE and our only non-key trade pieces are Walker and Giddens, neither of whom have shown anything. Just accept the fact that Ray is going to get paid by the Celtics. I could see him getting declining in skill but this still Ray Allen who's greatest asset is his shooting which I anticipate will be like Reggie Miller...

Who's going to move a wing worth that kind of bread for an expiring contract? Any player like that is the cornerstone of a franchise. Even a struggling team has to pretend they're trying to compete..

If you're saying an offer to Ray of $13M (minimum)to $15M (most) a year, I highly doubt that. That's way too high a number for a per-season salary for an aging star. I still believe it'll be more like $8M tops. He won't be offered more than Pierce when his [Pierce] time comes up. Pierce is the better player and younger player.

It doesn't have to be one guy. I'd trade Ray for J Rich & Barbosa in a heartbeat. And there has been plenty of speculation that Phoenix would like out from under Richardson's contract.

But your the only person on Earth who thinks Paul Pierce is signing an extension for 10 mil a year. He is one of the 3 or 4 best players in the league at his position and one of the 10 best players in the league. While I hope he will be willing to do what KG did he may well say he has given his whole career to this franchise and he wants his money. He can opt out and get a max deal, with tons of teams having the cap space. Either way how can you expect Pierce to take less money than KG?
You are also looking at this wrong way as far as it concerns Ray you can't pay him based on his age you pay him based on his performance. It isn't about per year salary for Ray. Maybe he wasn't worth 18 mil last season but he was worth 15 or 16 and in this league that is fine. If Ray wants to go year to year and continues to shoot the way he shot the ball last year then 13-15 mil a season is fine. Now if he wants 3 or 4 years you have to project who he is going to be and then you want his annual avg to come back down.
I think you look at an extension for Ray in total value as opposed to per year. Based off of Kidd's contract Ray, who is playing at a much higher level, is starting at a total value of around 24 mil whether it is for 2 or 3 years, I think what Boston will likely do is offer him 2 years at 24 or 4 years 32. With the 4 year deal they likely risk overpaying by a year but at the same time they get that lower per year salary to do other things. I would even look at that last year as a gold watch he gets it whether he plays or not. He can't expect to get too significant a contract at 38 years old so it might make sense.
