Boozer's Trade Value

Hoopsworld speculated on possible Boozer deals and most of them less the last one gives Utah much better trade value then I would expect. I guess a PF that can post up, but plays no defense and is a head case with only one year left on an inflated contract has alot more value than you would expect.

Yeah PF's that give you 20-10 and have a contract that doesn't limit your 2010 free agency options is a real burden.

Boozer really isn't a "head case". He isn't that bright but he is hardly Ron Artest or Zach Randolph. How many players in the league average 20 and 10 while also playing D? Dirk Nowitzki won MVP doing close to those same numbers and his D is awful!! Would you trade Dirk Nowitzki for chump change? If Boozer could stay as healthy as Nowitzki he would probably have fairly similar value although Dirk would still have more value due to his range. 20-10 guys are rare and if the Jazz are patient they will get a sweet deal out of him.

Hoopsworld feature articles aren't anything more than fans enlisted to write info about their teams. I wouldn't use this story as a gauge for trade value in the league. His examples are either very well known rumors or the results of Trade Checker playing.

I don't get why everyone expects Boozer's trade value to be so low on this board.

He's a legitimate go to scorer.
When he plays your team is better.
He is a huge expiring contract going into the most coveted free agency summer of all time.

Other then his injury problems, there is no reason another team wouldn't want him.

I do agree that most of those deals are unlikely to happen, simply because most of those teams can pursue Boozer next year without giving up their top prospect. (The Kings' one is especially implausible, because that team is terrible and should not be trading its good rookies for guys who will just walk.) The Nets' one is atrocious and I'm not even sure why it's listed.

The Jazz may be waiting for a good team to falter. They could get good value if a team like Chicago or LAC go down the tubes early.

I still like it more for the Jazz to develope Koufos a la Gasol, as a PF/C combo. If I have to choose between Koufos and Thomas/Beasley kind of dudes, I'd put my money on Koufos without hesitation.
That's why I don't see the loss of Boozer as trouble. I think the best for the Jazz is to trade him for expiring + first round pick + other considerations or picks.

I do think Koufos showing in camp and during the early part of the season will really help determine what the Jazz are willing to take back for Boozer in a trade. If he plays well and can handle 15-20 minutes a game the Jazz should be much more willing to part with Boozer, especially since they won't be looking for a young big in return necessarily.

They may be more willing to take on an expiring, an unproven young player and a draft pick, or a talented wing and a draft pick/expiring if Koufos proves to be NBA quality.

I'm really praying that the piece the jazz bring back in return isn't a big man. While I'd be happy to get either Tyrus or Beasley, preferably Tyrus out of the two, I'd really like to see them bring in a scoring guard. Someone who can make plays for himself with the ball in his hands. Other than Deron the Jazz really don't have another playmaker. AK is probably the closest after D-Will unless Ronnie or C.J. developed their games in that regard this offseason. Corey Maggette and Wright could be good value. Gives us young talent and also a player who can make plays for himself. Too bad the Jazz weren't able to swing a Fesenko and Harpring for Jefferson deal.

The last thing I want from a Boozer deal is a long term contract worth more than $5-6M a year unless it was for a young All-Star caliber player.

There is 3 good reasons I can think of for his options being limited:
- He is good enough a player they must give something in return--but for a 1 year rental how much do teams want to give? Nobody wants to limit their flexibility next summer but nobody also wants to dump anything other than their crap contracts for a 1 year rental expiring deal.
- Boozer's injury history is a HUGE knock against him
- Word from the Boozer camp over the summer is his next team will need to be starting in the $14 mill/year range for a contract extention.

If people believed they could rely on Boozer long-term, his value would be much higher. That is why he needs to come in and put together a great year to show he can average more than 55 games/year (like he has with the Jazz).

Once again I want to point out that a team getting Boozer in a trade also acquires his Bird rights meaning that team could go over the cap to re-sign him. That should be significant if the cap decreases again.
