Get rid of Wells scenario: Wells for Zito

1) Zito looks to be getting more and more serviceable this year. Wells is getting worse and worse and the full brunt of the contract hasn't even kicked in yet. Having Wells "flail" about is going to be very painful to watch considering how much he makes.

2) I think the Jays can make trades, right? If they get Zito, trade some of the iffy pitching depth away for a legit CF. When I say iffy, I mean guys like Tallet (wtf happened to him), Richmond and Litsch. They could, at the very least, fetch you a defensive CF to compensate for Lind and Snyder being out there.

I'm still for a Wells and Zito trade. It makes sense for both sides. The SF outfield is pretty weak.

You can definitely make trades, but cheap and somewhat capable center fielders are much harder to come by than cheap long relievers/fifth starters. That's why I don't see that much of a benefit to the trade...Wells blows, but his position (and our lack of organizational depth at CF) leaves us with few options other than to overpay, or slot in a AAAA guy like Buck Coats who would hit ninth and represent a gaping hole in the lineup.

Coco Crisp, Endy Chavez and Reed Johnson are the only CFs I can think of who'll be on the off-season, and that's a sorry bunch whose positional value will get them about $2m more than they're worth, which wipes out a fair amount of the savings from trading Wells; $21m + $500k-$1m for a longman versus $18.5m + $3-4m for a center fielder with Zito. It'd make sense if you think that Darin Mastroianni is capable of manning the position within 18 months, but I don't have particularly high hopes in that regard.

In exchange for Wells? Low. I think even the Dodgers would rather have Pierre than Wells right now. Would be nice for the Jays to get that leadoff man they desperately need.

Juan Pierre would be good. However, after the Andruw Jones fiasco, the Dodgers may be less inclined to take up big salary for a former "star" like Wells. They might want more "sure things". And, if Wells goes there, he might be the highest paid 4th outfielder outside of Gary Matthews Jr.

Agreed. Zito has been playing fairly well lately for SF. I think there's no way they're open for a trade for Wells at this point.

Just ITO peripherals, Zito's actually looking pretty good of late.

He's gained about 3 mph on his fastball, a couple mph on his slider, his curve is getting nasty, his control is coming back, he's not getting hit as hard, striking more guys out... basically everything is improving for him. He's also still getting terrible run support, and he's getting a lot more ground outs versus air outs.

Basically, Barry Zito is starting to come back. He hasn't looked like this since 2006, and that was back in the American League. He's 27 games in and he's actually looking a bit like he used to in Oakland, at least in the second half of his time there.

Too bad he's improving. However, if SF makes the playoffs and their outfielders make mistakes or suck when they get knocked out of the playoffs, I can see, at least, SF think about it.

Also, if they make the playoffs, in a 5 game series, I don't think Zito will start. However, if he does start and he's terrible AND their weak outfield lets them down, then Zito for Wells should be considered.

(Can't believe I hoping for a Wells for crappy Barry Zito deal. That's how much I hate Wells).
