Chicago Bears running back Kevin Jones will miss the entire season after suffering a torn ligament in his left ankle Thursday night at Soldier Field.
Jones jumped near the sideline on his seventh carry of the game and came down awkwardly on his left ankle. X-rays were negative but an MRI performed this morning showed the damage. He will require surgery and the rehabilitation process is expected to take eight to 10 months.
He re-signed with the Bears in March, getting a $3.5 million, two-year contract to come back as the complement to starter Matt Forte. Jones suffered a torn ACL with the Detroit Lions in 2007.
This means that Forte will now be backed by Garrett Wolfe and Adrian Peterson.

KJ is a guy you want to succeed, but man did he look slow this last year and a half.
RBs who get hurt bad usually dont bounce back. This is now the second big injury in the last few yrs.

Re: Kevin Jones out for the season
He has nobody but himself to blame after jumping in the air like that. You just don't see RBs do that.
Again, if the Packers cut Lumpkin, I'd snag him.
No big loss, really. I'm sure there are plenty of guys hitting the wire of equal if not better ability that want a shot.

while this is true, its not reassuring that Forte has no real backup worth worrying about if you are an opposing defense. Running back by committee was out anyway with Forte's ability to stay on the field, which is how I console myself. Season now hinges on MFs health and freshness, which ought to be difficult to count on. These guys with a ton of touches and perfect health are very rare.
as an aside, Bears seemingly don't get a year without at least 2 guys out for the season before it begins. The over under was 2, so at least the over hasn't come in. Who wants to bet somebody willl be out for the year after the Packer game?

If Forte or Cutler gets hurt at any point causing them to miss a few games we are in big big trouble.

Damn I had high hopes for him. Whoever called taking a RB early next year was spot on(even though it will be a pretty godawful draft for Rbs..again)

This could be a pretty big loss even though Forte effectively carried the entire load last year. If Jones could have gotten 450 rushing yards or so this year then Forte's production could have been maxmized.
Peterson and Wolfe aren't great backup options.

Right - but that was true before Kevin Jones was hurt as well is all I'm saying.

That was just my opinion but it just seems to make sense. Kevin Jones is either hurt or ineffective and Wolfe/Peterson aren't guys you want back there for 5 to 7 snaps per game. I hear Oregon has this nice RB....oh, wait.

Re: Kevin Jones out for the season
like it or not, Peterson will now be getting a few carries every Sunday. while nobody likes to see the primary backup go down, i think we'll still be okay offensively. Peterson has been around and now will be his time to get 5-7 carries a game. hopefully he can prove that he is an effective backup.

i predict jamal lewis gets cut and is signed as our backup rb...
We have Martell Webster. He's called Kyle Korver here, and we shall love him and squeeze him and call him Ashton. -BrooklynBulls

And I'll predict we won't be content with Peterson and/or Wolfe as the primary backups and we'll either hit the wire or trade a late round pick for a backup.

I predict Cutler makes Wolfe look special this year when he gets in the game - fooling us all into thinking he actually wasn't a wasted draft pick

Re: Kevin Jones out for the season
I actually don't care too much. For all the praise Jones been getting this offseason, he really sucked during the preseason. I feel for him, but I don't think it's a loss for us if any. I personally prefer Peterson anyway.

Very true kozelkid. Actually if JA and Lovie said upfront that it was an open competition for the backup RB spot then cut Jones based on performance I would have been ok with that move.

Re: Kevin Jones out for the season
Anyone know where a position-by-position list of players *that have been cut* can be found? This would be a good way to see what RBs are available. AP could be decent, but if a free agent could be had that can catch out of the back field and block, then it is worth looking at.

Packers cut Northwestern RB Tyrell Sutton per Brad Biggs. I know the Bears like inviting former NU players into camp.

Re: Kevin Jones out for the season
Lorenzo Booker was cut as well by Philly, not that he's any good but we definitely have some options if we want to pick up a capable backup which we probably should.
I can't find a list of all the available of RB's, unfortunately.

Sutton played well for the Pack this preseason and was getting positive yardage a lot. He has good speed and can dish out some punishing blows.
I know this is college footage (below), but he can has speed, moves and can dish it out.

We can at least bring him in for a tryout.
Maybe he can turn into the next Michael Turner type of running back.
A plea for post scoring is a plausible Bulls plan, but plainly isn't a priority. In response to a post player's dismay about his lack of points in the paint, Paxson said.... "I'm not nearly as concerned about the offensive stuff as he is."

Re: Kevin Jones out for the season
I am not happy and content with this statement going into the season.
http://blogs.suntimes.com/bears/

While he was a luxury addition last year, Jones was headed for an expanded role as Matt Forte's primary backup when he returned with a $3.5 million, two-year contract. Adrian Peterson might have been on the bubble to make the club and now he's a lock for the 53-man roster when it's officially announced later today along with Garrett Wolfe. The Bears could seek a free agent but word around the league was they are content to roll with three backs for now.
